Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The only sound in the room was Lily quietly crying.
Richard stood in the middle of our living room holding the boarding school papers like they were evidence from a crime scene.
Because to him, they were.
“Vanessa,” he said slowly, “explain this.””
I felt every pair of eyes in the room on me.
Chloe.
Dylan.
Lily.
My husband.
I had imagined this moment differently.
I thought I would have more time.
I thought I could fix everything before Richard found out.
“I can explain,” I said.
Richard laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“That’s what people say when they’re about to explain something they shouldn’t have done.””
“That’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
He held up the paper.
“You secretly applied to send my daughter away.””
“I was trying to help her.””
Lily looked up.
“Help me?””
Her small voice made me uncomfortable.
“Yes,” I said quickly.
“You need more structure.””
Richard stepped between us.
“Don’t talk about her like she’s a problem.””
“She has been struggling.””
“No, she has been grieving.””
His words hit harder than I expected.
Lily’s mother had died three years earlier.
At first, I had tried to be kind.
I bought her toys.
I helped with homework.
I told everyone I was ready to be a mother figure.
But slowly, things changed.
The attention Richard gave Lily started bothering me.
Every school event.
Every doctor appointment.
Every bedtime story.
There was always something with Lily.
And somehow, I convinced myself that I was the one being ignored.
“I needed space for our family,” I said.
Richard stared at me.
“Our family?””
His voice became sharper.
“Lily is our family.””
I looked away.
“You don’t understand what it’s like.””
“What?””
“To raise three children.””
Richard’s expression changed.
“I work every day to provide for all three.””
“And I’m the one managing the house.””
“Then why did you hide this from me?””
I had no answer.
Because there wasn’t a good one.
Richard grabbed the application again.
“Where did you get my signature?””
My heart jumped.
“I don’t know.””
He looked at me.
“Don’t lie.””
“I’m not lying.””
He pointed at the page.
“That’s my name.””
I stayed silent.
Richard walked to the kitchen counter and picked up his laptop.
“I’m calling the school.””
My stomach dropped.
“Richard, wait.””
“No.””
“Please.””
He looked back.
“For once, I want the truth before you create another story.””
He opened the school website.
Lily moved closer to me.
But when I reached toward her, she stepped back.
That hurt more than Richard’s anger.
“Lily…”
She looked down.
“Did you really want me gone?””
The question was so quiet that it almost broke me.
I wanted to say no.
I wanted to say I had only been stressed.
I wanted to say I never meant to hurt her.
But the truth was, I had imagined a house where Richard’s attention belonged mostly to me and my children.
And I hated admitting that.
“Lily, I—”
Richard interrupted.
“No. Let her answer.””
I looked at my husband.
The man who had trusted me.
The man who had given me access to his life.
“I thought it would be good for her,” I finally whispered.
Richard stared.
“You thought sending an eight-year-old away was good for her?””
“She would have better opportunities.””
“She has a home.””
“She has a father.””
“She has me.””
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“That’s exactly the problem.””
I felt my face burn.
“What does that mean?””
“It means you wanted her out of the way.””
The words landed like a slap.
Before I could respond, Richard’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
His face changed within seconds.
“Yes, this is Richard.””
He listened.
Then looked at the application.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What is it?””
Richard covered the phone.
“The school says they received this application two weeks ago.””
My blood went cold.
“That’s impossible.””
“They also said the enrollment fee was already paid.””
Silence.
“By who?”” Richard asked.
The person on the phone spoke.
Richard’s eyes slowly moved toward me.
“No.””
His voice became quieter.
“Say that again.””
I couldn’t hear the other person.
But I knew.
I knew something worse was coming.
Richard ended the call.
He looked at me.
“The payment came from an account connected to Lily’s trust.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“That’s not possible.””
Richard stepped closer.
“Vanessa.””
His voice was different now.
Not angry.
May you like
Afraid.
“What else did you take from my daughter?””
