Chapter 14: The Last Piece of the Puzzle

Richard didn’t speak for almost a minute.

His attorney.

The person who had represented him.

The person who had handled his legal documents.

The person he trusted.

Another betrayal.

Another person standing close enough to hurt him.

“How long?”” Richard asked.

Michael looked down.

“I don’t know.””

Richard stood.

“We need evidence.””

Michael nodded.

“I have some.””

He pulled out a flash drive.

“I copied files before I realized what was happening.””

Richard took it.

“Why didn’t you come forward?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“Because I was scared.””

“Of what?””

“Of being blamed.””

The answer was painfully human.

Everyone involved had been afraid.

And fear had turned into bad decisions.

We spent the next several hours reviewing the files.

Emails.

Documents.

Financial records.

The pattern slowly became clear.

Angela was not the mastermind.

She was a piece.

Michael was another piece.

The attorney was another.

They had all been connected by one goal.

Control.

Control of Lily’s inheritance.

Control of Richard’s company.

Control of the story.

Then we found the email.

The one that explained everything.

It was from Richard’s attorney.

The subject line was simple.

*Final Transfer Plan.*

Richard opened it.

His face changed with every sentence.

“What does it say?”” I asked.

He handed me the screen.

The email explained the entire plan.

First, create evidence against Vanessa.

Then remove Richard as guardian.

Then gain temporary control over Lily’s trust.

Then move company assets.

The final step was written at the bottom.

*Once Richard is removed, the remaining assets will be divided.*

I felt sick.

“They were going to take everything.””

Richard nodded.

“But they needed someone to blame.””

He looked at me.

“And they chose you.””

I looked away.

A year ago, I would have been furious.

I would have blamed everyone else.

But now I understood something.

I had given them the perfect opportunity.

I had made mistakes.

And they had used them.

That didn’t excuse what they did.

But it explained why their plan almost worked.

The police arrested Richard’s attorney two days later.

Angela was arrested shortly after.

Michael cooperated with investigators.

The truth finally came out.

But some damage couldn’t be fixed by a courtroom.

That evening, Richard and I sat outside while Lily played in the yard.

“She looks happier,” I said.

Richard watched her.

“She is.””

A long silence passed.

Then he said:

“I don’t know what happens with us.””

I nodded.

“I understand.””

“I want to forgive you.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“But?””

“But I need time.””

That was fair.

More than fair.

“I’m sorry.””

He looked at me.

“I know.””

For the first time in months, there was no anger.

No lies.

Just honesty.

Later that night, Lily came inside holding a flower.

She handed it to me.

“For you.””

I smiled.

“Thank you.””

She looked at me.

“Are you staying?””

The question hurt.

Because I knew why she asked.

I knelt down.

“I’m trying.””

She nodded.

“Okay.””

A child’s forgiveness was complicated.

She didn’t forget.

But she still had room in her heart.

The next morning, Richard received a call.

His expression changed while listening.

“What happened?””

He ended the call.

“The court wants one final hearing.””

I felt nervous.

“About custody?””

He nodded.

“But not because of Angela.””

“Then why?””

He looked at me.

“Because they found something new.””

My heart sank.

“What?””

Richard looked toward Lily’s room.

Then back at me.

“They found the original letter from Lily’s mother.””

I frowned.

“What letter?””

“The one that created the trust.””

I didn’t understand.

Richard handed me the document.

I read the first lines.

And my hands started shaking.

Because Lily’s mother had written something nobody knew.

Something that changed everything.

A sentence about who she wanted raising her daughter.

And at the bottom was her final request.

Not to Richard.

Not to her family.

To me.

My eyes filled with tears.

May you like

Because the woman I had spent years feeling compared to…

had trusted me more than I trusted myself.
