Chapter 11: The Truth Richard Kept Hidden

I stared at the document.

I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

Richard.

His name was on the filing.

Not Angela’s.

Not some stranger’s.

His.

I looked at him.

“What is this?””

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more than anything.

“Richard.””

He took a breath.

“I was going to tell you.””

“When?””

He looked away.

“After the hearing.””

My heart sank.

“What did you file?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“A request for separation.””

The hallway seemed to disappear around me.

I could hear people walking.

Lawyers talking.

Doors opening.

But all I could focus on was him.

“You filed to separate from me?””

Richard’s face showed pain.

“Yes.””

I nodded slowly.

Because somehow, even after everything, hearing it still hurt.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I didn’t know what I wanted.””

I laughed quietly.

“You knew enough to file papers.””

He looked down.

“I needed time.””

I wiped my eyes.

“Time away from me?””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But then he stepped closer.

“Vanessa, I need you to understand something.””

I looked at him.

“I love you.””

My expression changed.

“But I don’t trust you.””

That hurt more than anger.

Because he was right.

Trust wasn’t broken by one mistake.

It was broken by all the secrets before it.

“I’m sorry.””

“I know.””

“But I can fix this.””

Richard looked at me.

“I don’t know if we can.””

Before I could answer, Lily walked over.

She had been waiting with my attorney.

“Daddy?””

Richard immediately softened.

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are you leaving?””

His face changed.

“No.””

“Are you leaving Vanessa?””

Nobody spoke.

Lily looked between us.

“I don’t want another family to break.””

My heart cracked.

Richard knelt beside her.

“Baby, this is not your fault.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Then she looked at me.

“Can Vanessa stay?””

I couldn’t breathe.

Because Lily was asking for me after everything.

Richard looked at me.

Then at her.

“I don’t know.””

That answer hurt both of us.

That night, I went home alone.

The house felt completely different.

The same walls.

The same furniture.

But nothing felt like mine.

I sat in the living room where everything had started.

The shopping bags were gone.

The expensive clothes were gone.

Only memories remained.

Then I saw something on the coffee table.

A drawing.

Lily’s drawing.

The three of us.

I picked it up.

On the back was a note.

My hands shook as I turned it over.

In messy handwriting, Lily had written:

*I hope we can be happy again.*

I cried.

Not because I wanted forgiveness.

Because I finally understood what I had almost destroyed.

The next morning, my attorney called.

“Vanessa, we found something.””

I sat up.

“What?””

“Something that changes the case.””

“What?””

She paused.

“The trust account investigation.””

My heart raced.

“What about it?””

“The original withdrawal wasn’t made from your device.””

I froze.

“But they said—”

“They assumed.””

She continued.

“The first transfer happened before your shopping trip.””

I stood.

“What?””

“Someone moved money from Lily’s account before you ever touched it.””

My mind went blank.

“Who?””

There was silence.

Then:

“We traced the first transaction.””

I waited.

“And Vanessa…”

Her voice became serious.

“The account was accessed from Richard’s office.””

I felt cold.

“No.””

“I know.””

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

I sat down.

“Richard would never hurt Lily.””

My attorney lowered her voice.

“Then you need to ask him why his office computer accessed her trust account three months ago.””

I stared at the wall.

Because suddenly, the story had changed again.

Angela had lied.

I had lied.

But now there was another question.

May you like

One I never expected.

What had Richard been hiding?
