Chapter 3: The Account Nobody Was Supposed to Find
I spent the next five minutes saying the same thing over and over.
“I can explain.””
But every time I said it, it sounded weaker.
Because there was nothing that could explain what Richard had found.
The living room that once looked like a celebration now felt like a courtroom.
The shopping bags were still everywhere.
The expensive shoes.
The designer dresses.
The things I had been so proud of.
Now they looked like evidence.
Richard stood near the window with his phone in his hand.
“Tell me everything.””
I wiped my face.
“I made a mistake.””
“A mistake is forgetting an appointment.””
His eyes moved to Lily.
“This is my daughter’s future.””
I wanted to defend myself.
I wanted to tell him I had worked hard.
That Chloe and Dylan deserved nice things too.
That I felt invisible.
But none of those excuses changed what I did.
“I only borrowed it.””
Richard looked at me.
“You borrowed her money?””
“I was going to replace it.””
“When?””
I didn’t answer.
“Vanessa. When?””
My silence was enough.
Lily sat beside Richard on the couch.
She looked so small.
So tired.
“Daddy…”
He immediately softened.
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Did Mommy leave me money because she loved me?””
Richard closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
“Then why did Vanessa use it?””
I felt something break inside me.
Not because Richard was angry.
Because Lily was confused.
A child was trying to understand why an adult she trusted had hurt her.
“I thought…” I started.
Nobody spoke.
“I thought you were spending too much time worrying about her.””
Richard stared.
“What?””
“I felt like there was no room for me anymore.””
His face showed disbelief.
“So you punished an eight-year-old because you felt ignored?””
“I didn’t mean to punish her.””
“Then what do you call this?””
He held up the boarding school papers.
I had no answer.
At that moment, Chloe walked over.
“Mom?””
I looked at her.
She was holding one of the shopping receipts.
“Is this why Lily didn’t get anything?””
My chest tightened.
“Chloe…”
She shook her head.
“You told us we earned these.””
“I wanted you to have nice things.””
“But Lily didn’t?””
The disappointment in my daughter’s voice was devastating.
Before I could respond, Richard’s phone buzzed again.
A message appeared.
He looked down.
Then his face changed.
“What now?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He turned the phone around.
It was a bank alert.
Another withdrawal.
Not twelve thousand.
More.
A much larger amount.
My hands started shaking.
“What is that?””
Richard stared at the screen.
“The trust account.””
I felt dizzy.
“That’s impossible.””
He scrolled.
“There were multiple transfers.””
My mouth went dry.
“I only took the clothes money.””
Richard looked up.
“Then explain the other forty thousand dollars.””
The room went completely silent.
Forty thousand.
I had forgotten about that.
No.
I hadn’t forgotten.
I had buried it.
Because admitting that money existed meant admitting what I had really done.
Richard’s voice became cold.
“Where did the rest go?””
I looked at the floor.
“Vanessa.””
“I was going to fix it.””
“Where did it go?””
My eyes moved toward the hallway.
Toward the locked drawer in my bedroom.
Richard noticed.
And he knew.
“You kept something.””
I didn’t move.
He walked toward the hallway.
“Richard, don’t.””
He stopped.
Slowly turned around.
“Why?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because inside that drawer was the one thing I had hoped he would never find.
A document.
A plan.
A secret that went beyond clothes.
Richard walked into our bedroom.
I followed behind him.
My heart pounded as he opened the drawer.
Inside was a folder.
He picked it up.
On the front was written:
*Lily Anderson — Guardianship Transfer Documents*
Richard stared at the words.
Then he opened the folder.
The first page made his face lose all emotion.
He looked at me.
“Vanessa…”
May you like
His voice was almost a whisper.
“Why did you file papers asking the court to remove me as Lily’s father?””
