Chapter 13: The Man Everyone Trusted
The photograph sat between us on the kitchen table.
A single image.
A single moment.
But it changed everything.
Michael.
Lily’s uncle.
The man who had walked into our house claiming he wanted to help.
The man who brought us Angela’s email.
The man who acted like he was exposing the truth.
Richard stared at the screen.
“I don’t understand.””
Neither did I.
Because Michael had looked genuinely guilty.
He had apologized.
He had admitted he believed Angela.
He had acted like he wanted to fix what he helped break.
But now he was the person sitting at the center of everything.
“He was there from the beginning,” Richard whispered.
I looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
Richard sat down slowly.
“Michael knew about Lily’s trust before anyone else.””
My stomach tightened.
“He was family.””
Richard nodded.
“And that’s why I trusted him.””
The realization was painful.
Angela had used my insecurities.
Michael had used Richard’s trust.
Everyone had been playing a different role.
Richard grabbed his phone.
“I’m calling him.””
“Wait.””
He looked at me.
“Why?””
“Because if he knows we found out, he’ll disappear.””
Richard stopped.
For once, he listened.
We contacted the bank and law enforcement instead.
The investigation moved quickly after that.
The security footage gave them a starting point.
The account records gave them a timeline.
And the timeline revealed something shocking.
Michael had been accessing Lily’s trust for nearly a year.
Long before I ever touched the money.
Long before the shopping trip.
Long before Angela’s plan became obvious.
That night, Richard and I sat in the living room.
Neither of us spoke for a while.
Then he finally said:
“I owe you an apology.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
“For believing the worst version of you.””
I swallowed.
“You had reasons.””
“I did.””
He looked down.
“But I also ignored things.””
“What things?””
“The way Angela always appeared whenever there was a problem.””
I thought about it.
He was right.
Angela had always been nearby.
Always offering advice.
Always knowing details she shouldn’t know.
“She wanted us fighting.””
Richard nodded.
“Exactly.””
The next morning, Michael agreed to meet.
At first, I thought it was a mistake.
But Richard insisted.
“He needs to explain.””
We met at a quiet coffee shop.
Michael looked different.
Not confident.
Not helpful.
Just tired.
When he saw us, he immediately knew.
“You found out.””
Richard didn’t sit.
“You accessed Lily’s account.””
Michael closed his eyes.
“I can explain.””
Everyone said that.
Everyone who had hurt us said that.
Richard placed the photograph on the table.
“Explain.””
Michael stared at it.
Then sighed.
“I didn’t plan for this to happen.””
My hands tightened.
“You didn’t plan to steal from a child?””
His face showed shame.
“No.””
“Then why?””
Michael looked at Richard.
“Because I thought I was protecting Lily.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“Like Angela?””
Michael looked away.
“Angela convinced me that Vanessa was dangerous.””
I felt anger rising.
“You believed her?””
“I saw things.””
“What things?””
Michael hesitated.
“She showed me messages.””
“Fake messages?””
“I don’t know.””
Richard leaned forward.
“You don’t know?””
Michael looked broken.
“She was convincing.””
That answer made me realize something.
Angela’s greatest weapon wasn’t money.
It was manipulation.
She made people feel like they were heroes.
Michael continued.
“She told me if Lily’s trust was protected, she would never have to worry about money.””
Richard stared.
“So you moved money?””
“I thought I was securing it.””
“By taking it?””
Michael lowered his head.
“I made mistakes.””
Then Richard asked the question we had been waiting for.
“Where is the money?””
Michael didn’t answer.
That silence told us everything.
“Michael.””
Finally, he whispered:
“It’s not gone.””
I froze.
“What?””
He looked at me.
“The money was transferred into another account.””
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“Whose?””
Michael swallowed.
“The account was created under a company name.””
“What company?””
Michael reached into his bag.
He pulled out a document.
Richard took it.
His face changed as he read.
I leaned closer.
At the top was the company name.
*Anderson Family Legacy Services.*
My heart stopped.
“That’s Richard’s company.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He turned the paper over.
There was a signature.
His signature.
But he hadn’t signed it.
Michael whispered:
“Someone created it using your identity.””
Richard stared at the document.
Then looked at me.
Because suddenly, we understood.
This wasn’t just about stealing Lily’s money.
Someone had been building a case.
A fake company.
Fake signatures.
Fake accusations.
And the final person they planned to destroy was not me.
It was Richard.
Then Michael said the words that changed everything.
“There’s one more person involved.””
Richard looked up.
“Who?””
Michael’s face went pale.
“The person who created all the documents.””
A pause.

Then:
“Your attorney.””
