Chapter 7: The Man Behind The Plan

For five seconds, I couldn’t move.

I stared at the photo on my phone.

Vanessa.

Sitting in a dark room.

Her hands tied.

The woman who had tried to destroy my son was now the person someone else had taken.

My emotions were tangled.

Anger.

Betrayal.

Confusion.

But one thing was clear.

James had gone too far.

“Dad?””

Ethan’s voice pulled me back.

I turned.

He was standing beside Chloe, his face pale.

“What happened?””

I locked my phone.

“James has your mother.””

Chloe covered her mouth.

“No.””

Her reaction surprised me.

Not because she was scared.

Because she looked devastated.

Despite everything Vanessa had done, Chloe still loved her.

She was still her mother.

“Where is Lily?”” I asked.

Chloe looked around.

“She was upstairs.””

My heart stopped.

“Lily?””

We searched every room.

The kitchen.

The bedrooms.

The backyard.

Nothing.

Then Ethan noticed something near the staircase.

A small pink bracelet.

Lily’s bracelet.

He picked it up.

“She was here.””

I grabbed my phone and called Lily.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then a notification appeared.

A message from an unknown number.

*Stop looking.*

My blood ran cold.

Another message followed.

*Or you lose both of them.*

I showed Chloe.

Her face collapsed.

“This is my fault.””

I looked at her.

“No.””

“Yes.””

Her voice cracked.

“I helped Mom.””

“You were manipulated.””

“I knew she was lying.””

She wiped her tears.

“But I didn’t know how far she would go.””

I looked at Ethan.

My son was watching Chloe carefully.

I knew what he was thinking.

He understood betrayal.

Because he had lived it.

But he still said:

“We need to find them.””

I looked at him.

“Ethan—”

“She’s Lily’s mom.””

He swallowed.

“And Lily is my sister.””

That moment reminded me exactly who my son was.

The people who hurt him did not change the kind of person he was.

I called the police.

Within twenty minutes, officers arrived.

Detective Sarah Miller took the lead.

She listened as I explained everything.

When I finished, she looked through the evidence.

“This is bigger than a family dispute.””

“I know.””

She looked at the messages.

“James Parker?””

“No. James Carter.””

She paused.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

She wrote something down.

“Mr. Hayes, James Carter has been investigated before.””

My eyes narrowed.

“For what?””

“Financial fraud.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because the investigation never became public.””

Detective Miller looked at the documents.

“Your wife’s involvement changes things.””

I looked away.

“Yeah.””

A few minutes later, she received a call.

Her expression changed.

“What?””

She listened.

Then looked at me.

“We found a vehicle connected to James.””

“Where?””

“An abandoned warehouse outside the city.””

I stood immediately.

“I’m coming.””

“No.””

“Detective—”

“You are emotionally involved.””

“My wife and my daughter are inside that situation.””

She looked at Ethan.

Then at me.

“Stay behind my officers.””

I nodded.

Because for the first time in two days, I understood something.

Charging in blindly would only make me another victim of James’ plan.

The warehouse was old.

Rust covered the metal walls.

The windows were broken.

As we approached, Detective Miller raised her hand.

Everyone stopped.

A light flickered inside.

Then we heard a voice.

James.

“You really thought you could beat me?””

I froze.

He was talking to someone.

Vanessa.

The officers moved closer.

Through a broken window, I saw them.

Vanessa was sitting in a chair.

Lily was beside her.

Alive.

Terrified.

And standing in front of them was James.

He held a folder.

My company documents.

“You ruined everything,” James told Vanessa.

She looked exhausted.

“You promised you would protect us.””

James laughed.

“I promised you money.””

“You said Richard would lose control.””

“And he almost did.””

He stepped closer.

“But then you got emotional.””

Vanessa looked away.

“I didn’t want Ethan hurt.””

James smiled.

“Please.””

My fists tightened.

Vanessa had betrayed Ethan.

But even she was nothing compared to this man.

Then Lily spoke.

“You’re a bad person.””

James turned.

The room went silent.

“You know what happens to children who talk too much?””

Before he could continue, Detective Miller moved.

“James Carter! Step away!””

Everything exploded at once.

James turned.

The officers rushed inside.

He dropped the folder.

Vanessa grabbed Lily.

I ran forward.

“Lily!””

She ran into my arms.

For a moment, I forgot everything else.

Then I heard shouting.

James was being restrained.

But before they took him away, he looked directly at me.

And smiled.

Not scared.

Not defeated.

Confident.

May you like

That scared me more.

Because a man who had lost did not smile like that.
