Chapter 13: The Real Target

The old man’s words echoed through the abandoned house.

“Ethan was never the target.””

I stared at him.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at him.

For years, I had believed my son was the person everyone wanted to hurt.

His inheritance.

His future.

His place in our family.

But maybe I had been looking in the wrong direction.

“Who are you?””

The man smiled faintly.

“You know exactly who I am.””

I stepped forward.

“Say your name.””

He looked around the room.

“Theodore Whitmore.””

Vanessa’s father.

The man who had supposedly died five years ago.

The man whose death certificate I had once seen.

The man who was standing in front of me like the past had never happened.

Ethan looked at him with anger.

“You knew my mom.””

Theodore looked at him.

“I did.””

“You hurt her.””

His expression changed slightly.

Not guilt.

Something worse.

Regret.

“I made mistakes.””

I almost laughed.

Mistakes.

That was the word people used when they wanted to make destruction sound smaller.

“You destroyed my family.””

Theodore looked at me.

“No, Richard.””

His voice became colder.

“Your family destroyed itself.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Dad, stop.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew?””

She looked down.

“I knew he was alive.””

My chest tightened.

“How long?””

She didn’t answer.

“How long, Vanessa?””

“Two years.””

The room went silent.

Two years.

The entire time she lived with me.

The entire time she looked Ethan in the eyes.

She knew her father was alive.

She knew the truth was hidden.

And she said nothing.

“Why?””

Vanessa started crying.

“Because he threatened me.””

I looked at Theodore.

“With what?””

“With my daughters.””

Lily moved closer to me.

Theodore looked at her.

“I never wanted them involved.””

I stepped between them.

“You used everyone.””

His expression hardened.

“I built an empire.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You stole one.””

Theodore smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He walked deeper into the room.

“Your company was never just a business.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

“Your father built something before you inherited it.””

My eyes narrowed.

“My father?””

He nodded.

“A financial network.””

I felt confused.

“My father owned a small construction company.””

“That’s what everyone believed.””

He pulled out a folder.

Inside were old documents.

“The company had hidden assets.””

I looked through them.

Accounts.

Investments.

Names.

My family history had been rewritten.

“Theodore discovered those accounts,” Emily said quietly.

Everyone looked at her.

“He spent years trying to gain control.””

Theodore ignored her.

“Your father trusted the wrong people.””

I looked at him.

“And you think that makes what you did acceptable?””

“No.””

For the first time, he sounded honest.

“It makes it necessary.””

My anger rose.

“Necessary?””

He pointed at the documents.

“Richard, your family’s wealth was protected through legal structures. Structures only you could access.””

I stared.

“So you needed me.””

“Yes.””

That single word explained everything.

The accusations.

The fake instability claims.

The inheritance attack.

The attempts to ruin my reputation.

They weren’t trying to take Ethan’s money.

They were trying to make me legally incapable.

“So James…”

“Was useful.””

“And Vanessa?””

Theodore looked at his daughter.

“She was emotional.””

Vanessa flinched.

I saw the pain on her face.

Even after everything, hearing her father dismiss her like a tool hurt.

Then I noticed something.

Theodore wasn’t holding a weapon.

He wasn’t threatening us.

He was talking.

Explaining.

Because he believed he had already won.

That was his mistake.

People who think they have won always reveal too much.

Emily quietly moved her hand toward her phone.

Theodore noticed.

“Still trying to record me?””

Emily froze.

My stomach dropped.

He knew.

He always knew.

“You’ve been watching us.””

He smiled.

“I’ve been watching everyone.””

Then he looked at Ethan.

“Especially you.””

Ethan stepped back.

“Why?””

Theodore stared at him.

“Because your mother hid something from me.””

My heart raced.

“What?””

He looked at Ethan.

“Your mother left you something before she died.””

I remembered the hidden box.

The letter.

The warning.

“What did she leave?””

Theodore smiled.

“The only thing I couldn’t find.””

The room went quiet.

“What?””

“A recording.””

My breath caught.

“A recording of what?””

Theodore looked directly at me.

“The truth about what happened the night she died.””

Before anyone could respond, the lights suddenly shut off.

Darkness swallowed the room.

A loud crash came from the hallway.

Then a voice shouted:

“RUN!””

Emily grabbed Ethan.

I reached for Lily.

And in the chaos, Theodore disappeared.

May you like

But on the floor where he had been standing…

Was a small audio recorder.
