Chapter 4: The Money She Hid
The recording ended.
But Vanessa’s voice stayed in my head.
“Richard will never know that I moved his money too.””
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The living room felt smaller.
The walls felt closer.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked like someone who had just watched a door slam shut behind her.
“Moved my money?”” I asked.
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her lips parted.
“I can explain.””
I laughed once.
Not because anything was funny.
Because I couldn’t believe those were still the words she chose.
“You’ve said that three times since yesterday.””
She looked down.
“Richard, it wasn’t what you think.””
“Then tell me what it was.””
Chloe stood near the staircase, crying silently.
Lily was holding onto the tablet with both hands.
Ethan stood beside me.
My son didn’t look angry.
He looked hurt.
That was worse.
Vanessa walked toward the couch.
“Can we talk privately?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Her eyes widened.
“Richard—”
“No more secrets.””
She looked at Ethan.
“This is a family matter.””
I stepped closer.
“He is my family.””
Those words seemed to hit her harder than I expected.
Vanessa sat down slowly.
“I transferred money from our joint account.””
“How much?””
She hesitated.
That hesitation told me everything.
“How much, Vanessa?””
“Twenty-five thousand dollars.””
Ethan looked shocked.
“Dad…”
I kept my eyes on her.
“Why?””
She rubbed her hands together.
“I needed it.””
“For what?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her voice became defensive.
“I was trying to protect myself.””
“From what?””
She looked up.
“From ending up with nothing.””
I stared at her.
“You had a husband. A home. A family.””
“You don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
She took a deep breath.
“Before I married you, I spent years taking care of everyone else. My daughters. My responsibilities. I never had security.””
I shook my head.
“So you stole from me?””
“No.””
“You moved money without telling me.””
“I borrowed it.””
“Borrowed?””
“Yes.””
“When were you planning to pay it back?””
Silence.
That was the answer.
Chloe wiped her eyes.
“Mom…”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Stay out of this.””
Chloe flinched.
I noticed.
A mother who had convinced her daughter to lie was now willing to silence her too.
That told me more than any recording.
I picked up the folder from the table.
“Why was Ethan part of this?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because you would never give me control over his inheritance.””
“Because I trusted you enough to know you shouldn’t have it.””
Her expression hardened.
“You always treated me like an outsider.””
I almost couldn’t believe it.
“An outsider?””
“Yes.””
“Vanessa, I married you. I raised your daughters. I worked every day to build this family.””
“And Ethan always came first.””
I stared at her.
There it was.
The truth hiding underneath everything.
Not money.
Not paperwork.
Jealousy.
“You were jealous of my son?””
“No.””
Her answer came too fast.
“Yes.””
The room went quiet.
Vanessa looked down.
“I hated that every time you looked at him, you saw his mother.””
My chest tightened.
Ethan looked away.
His mother had been gone for two years.
And my wife was angry that he still carried that memory.
“That is not his fault.””
“I know.””
“Do you?””
She didn’t answer.
I walked toward the window.
Outside, our neighborhood looked exactly the same.
The same houses.
The same streets.
But my home no longer felt like home.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
From my bank.
I opened it.
And my blood turned cold.
*Account Alert: New transfer request submitted.*
I looked closer.
The request was scheduled for tomorrow.
The amount?
$420,000.
Ethan’s inheritance.
I turned toward Vanessa.
“You already tried to move his money.””
Her face went pale.
“No.””
“The request is here.””
“I didn’t submit that.””
“Then who did?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Lily quietly raised her hand.
“I know.””
Everyone looked at her.
“Lily?””
She swallowed.
“I saw Mommy using the computer last night.””
Vanessa stood up.
“Lily, stop.””
But Lily continued.
“She was talking to someone.””
“Who?””
The little girl looked at the floor.
“She called him Mr. Parker.””
My stomach dropped.
Because I knew that name.
Mark Parker.
The lawyer handling Ethan’s inheritance.
The same lawyer who was supposed to protect him.
I grabbed my keys.
“I’m going to his office.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Richard, wait.””
I looked at her.
“For what?””
She whispered:
“Because if you go there, you’ll find out something worse.””
I stopped.
“What?””
Her eyes filled with fear.
And for the first time since this started, I believed she was afraid of someone else.
Not me.
Not Ethan.
May you like
Someone else.
“I wasn’t the one who came up with the plan.””
