Chapter 3: The Person Behind The Mask

I drove to the probate office with Ethan sitting silently beside me.

Neither of us spoke.

The city moved outside the window.

Cars.

People.

Normal life.

But my family had changed overnight.

When we arrived, Daniel, the probate assistant, greeted us with a serious expression.

“Mr. Hayes, thank you for coming.””

He looked at Ethan.

“And this must be Ethan.””

Ethan nodded.

Daniel handed me a folder.

“I wish this was a misunderstanding.””

I opened it.

The first page was a request to appoint Vanessa as temporary guardian of Ethan’s financial assets.

The second page contained statements.

False statements.

“Ethan has displayed aggressive behavior.””

“Ethan has taken property without permission.””

“Ethan cannot be trusted with financial decisions.””

My hands tightened around the paper.

Every accusation was a weapon.

Every lie was carefully chosen.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Did you know your wife has been collecting documents about Ethan for several months?””

“No.””

“She submitted school records, personal notes, and statements from family members.””

I looked up.

“Family members?””

Daniel nodded.

“One statement came from Chloe.””

My stomach dropped.

I knew Chloe was involved.

But seeing her name made it real.

On the way home, Ethan finally spoke.

“Dad?””

“Yeah?””

“If they believe her…”

“They won’t.””

“But what if they do?””

I pulled the car over.

I turned toward him.

“Your mother spent her whole life making sure you were protected.””

His eyes lowered.

“I miss her.””

“I know.””

“And I feel like I’m losing another family.””

I reached over and squeezed his shoulder.

“You’re not losing me.””

He nodded.

But I could see the fear.

The fear that adults could make decisions and children had no power to stop them.

When we arrived home, Vanessa was waiting.

She stood in the living room.

No anger.

No shouting.

Just tears.

“I know you went to the probate office.””

I didn’t answer.

She wiped her face.

“Richard, please listen.””

I placed the folder on the table.

“You tried to take my son’s inheritance.””

“No.””

“You filed against me.””

“I was scared.””

“Scared of what?””

Her voice became softer.

“Of losing everything.””

I stared at her.

“You had a house. A family. Me.””

She looked away.

“I never felt like I belonged.””

For a moment, I almost felt sympathy.

Almost.

Then I remembered the video.

Her standing in that doorway.

Watching Chloe steal.

Planning to blame Ethan.

“You could have talked to me.””

“I tried.””

“When?””

She didn’t answer.

Because she knew.

She never did.

Then Chloe walked into the room.

Her eyes were red.

“Richard…”

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She started crying.

“I didn’t want to do it.””

“But you did.””

“My mom told me we needed the money.””

Vanessa turned.

“Chloe!””

But Chloe kept talking.

“She said if Ethan left, everything would be easier.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Easier?””

Vanessa’s face changed.

Like she knew the truth was finally coming out.

Then Chloe whispered:

“There’s one more thing you don’t know.””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

Chloe looked terrified.

“She didn’t just plan this because of Ethan’s inheritance.””

My heart sank.

“What else?””

Chloe reached into her pocket.

She pulled out her phone.

“There was another account.””

I frowned.

“What account?””

She unlocked the screen.

“My mom’s secret account.””

Vanessa’s face turned white.

“Chloe, don’t.””

But Chloe pressed play.

A recording started.

Vanessa’s voice filled the room.

“If Richard finds out about the money transfer, everything falls apart.””

I froze.

Money transfer?

Chloe looked at me.

“She wasn’t trying to get Ethan’s inheritance.””

I stared at the phone.

“Then what was she trying to hide?””

The recording continued.

And then I heard the name that made my entire body go cold.

May you like

My own name.

“Richard will never know that I moved his money too.””
