Chapter 2: The Hidden Plan
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was trying to understand how the woman sleeping beside me for five years could look at my son and see a problem to remove.
Ethan sat at the kitchen table the next morning, staring at a bowl of cereal he hadn’t touched.
“I’m sorry, Dad.””
I looked at him.
“For what?””
He shrugged.
“Because this happened because of me.””
I immediately shook my head.
“No.””
“But if I wasn’t here…”
I stood up.
“Ethan, listen to me.””
He looked at me.
“You are not the reason someone chose to hurt you.””
His eyes became wet.
For the first time in months, I saw the little boy who had lost his mother and was still trying to figure out where he belonged.
“I thought she liked me,” he whispered.
That hurt more than anything.
Because I knew he meant Vanessa.
Before yesterday, he had called her “Mom” sometimes.
Now he couldn’t even say her name.
A chair scraped behind us.
Lily walked into the kitchen.
She looked nervous.
“Mr. Richard?””
I turned.
“Yes?””
She held a small flash drive.
“I found something else.””
I took it from her.
“Where did you get this?””
“From Mommy’s office.””
My expression changed.
“Lily, you can’t take things without permission.””
“I know,” she said quickly.
“But I heard Mommy and Chloe talking last night.””
“What did they say?””
Lily looked down.
“Chloe asked if Ethan would really have to leave.””
I felt my jaw tighten.
“And?””
“Mommy said, ‘Once the court sees the evidence, Richard won’t have a choice.’”
Court.
That word stayed in my head.
I plugged the flash drive into my laptop.
There were several files.
Documents.
Emails.
Photos.
My heart started racing.
Then I saw a folder labeled:
“Ethan Case.””
I opened it.
Inside were screenshots of messages between Vanessa and someone saved as “Attorney Mark.””
The first message was dated a month ago.
Vanessa wrote:
“Can we speed this up? I need Richard to believe Ethan is unstable.””
The reply came moments later.
“Without evidence, the court won’t remove him from control of the inheritance.””
Then Vanessa responded.
“I’ll create the evidence.””
I closed my eyes.
She didn’t just accuse my son.
She built a story around him.
A fake story.
A story designed to make everyone believe he was dangerous.
The front door suddenly opened.
Vanessa walked in.
She froze when she saw my laptop.
“What are you doing?””
I looked at her.
“What should I be doing?””
Her eyes moved toward the screen.
Then toward Lily.
Her face changed.
“You went through my things?””
Lily stepped back.
“I’m sorry.””
Vanessa immediately walked toward her.
“Do you understand what you’ve done?””
I stood up.
“Don’t talk to her like that.””
Vanessa stopped.
“You’re protecting her now too?””
“No. I’m protecting my children.””
Her expression hardened.
“Your children?””
She laughed bitterly.
“That’s what this is about, isn’t it? You never wanted a real family with us.””
I stared at her.
“Vanessa, you tried to destroy my son.””
“No, Richard. I tried to save this family.””
“By lying?””
Her voice rose.
“By making sure we had security!””
I pointed at the laptop.
“Security? You wanted control of his inheritance.””
She became silent.
That silence told me everything.
Then she whispered:
“You don’t understand how expensive life is.””
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“So that’s your excuse?””
She looked away.
“I did what I had to do.””
I felt something inside me break.
Not my trust.
That was already gone.
Something deeper.
The belief that I knew my own wife.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
“Mr. Richard Hayes?””
“Yes.””
“This is Daniel from the probate office.””
My body went still.
“Why are you calling me?””
There was a pause.
Then he said:
“I’m calling because someone filed an emergency request regarding your son’s inheritance.””
I looked directly at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
The man continued.
“And there’s something you need to know.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What?””
“The person who filed the request claimed you were unable to protect Ethan.””
I swallowed.
“Who made that claim?””
May you like
The answer came quietly.
“Your wife.””
