Chapter 5: The Lawyer’s Secret
Mark Parker’s office was located downtown, on the fifteenth floor of a glass building that reflected the Atlanta skyline.
A place where people went when they trusted someone to protect what mattered most.
I walked through those doors feeling like I had been betrayed by everyone inside.
The receptionist looked up.
“Can I help you?””
“I need to see Mark Parker.””
“Do you have an appointment?””
“No.””
She glanced at my expression.
Then picked up the phone.
A minute later, Mark appeared.
He was in his late fifties, wearing an expensive suit and the same confident smile he had worn at my kitchen table months earlier.
“Richard.””
He sounded surprised.
But not shocked.
That bothered me.
“Did you know I would come?””
His smile faded.
“Why would you ask that?””
I placed the documents on his desk.
“Because someone tried to take control of my son’s inheritance.””
Mark looked down.
Then back at me.
“Richard, I think emotions are running high.””
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Talk like this is a misunderstanding.””
His expression changed.
“What are you accusing me of?””
“I’m asking why my wife’s petition contains false statements you helped prepare.””
He leaned back.
“Your wife came to me concerned about Ethan’s well-being.””
“Concerned?””
“Yes.””
“She claimed he was dangerous.””
Mark didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I laughed quietly.
“My son lost his mother. He moved into a new house. He barely talks. And you helped create a file saying he was unstable.””
“I only prepared documents based on information provided.””
“Information you never verified.””
He looked uncomfortable.
I noticed.
And that made me push harder.
“Who else was involved?””
“No one.””
“Mark.””
He sighed.
“You need to be careful.””
“Is that a threat?””
“No.””
“Then answer me.””
He looked toward the window.
For a moment, he seemed less like a powerful attorney.
More like a man trapped.
“Vanessa wasn’t the first person who contacted me.””
My heart slowed.
“Who was?””
He remained silent.
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
Finally, he whispered:
“Your business partner.””
I froze.
“What?””
“James.””
My longtime business partner.
The man who had attended my wedding.
The man who had helped me build my company.
“No.””
Mark opened a drawer.
He pulled out a file.
“I shouldn’t show you this.””
“Then why are you?””
“Because I realized too late what was happening.””
He handed it to me.
Inside were emails.
Messages.
Financial records.
The first email was from James.
*We need Richard removed from control before the merger.*
I read the sentence again.
Before the merger.
My company.
My money.
My future.
I looked at Mark.
“What does Vanessa have to do with this?””
His face was serious.
“She was supposed to create a reason for you to lose credibility.””
I felt sick.
“So Ethan was just a tool.””
“Yes.””
The word landed heavily.
Mark continued.
“Your wife believed if you were seen as unable to manage your own family, the court would question your ability to manage financial matters.””
I stared at the documents.
This wasn’t about one person.
It was a plan.
A coordinated attack.
“Why didn’t you tell me sooner?””
Mark looked ashamed.
“Because I was afraid.””
“Of them?””
He nodded.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“Richard, James has been moving company funds for months.””
I looked up.
“How much?””
Mark hesitated.
“More than $300,000.””
My hands tightened.
“That’s impossible.””
“I thought so too.””
“Why would Vanessa help him?””
Mark looked at me.
“Because James promised her something.””
“What?””
He opened another document.
A contract.
A private agreement.
I read the first line.
*Upon Richard Hayes’ removal, Vanessa Hayes will receive a percentage of transferred assets.*
I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
My wife wasn’t just trying to control Ethan’s inheritance.
She was helping someone steal my entire life.
Then Mark’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And his face changed.
“What?””
I watched him listen.
Then slowly lower the phone.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“James knows you’re here.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
Mark swallowed.
“Because someone just accessed the security system.””
I looked around.
“Whose security system?””
He didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:
“Your house.””
