Chapter 14: The Last Recording

We returned to my house before sunrise.

Not because we felt safe.

Because we needed somewhere familiar.

Somewhere we could think.

The audio recorder sat on my kitchen table.

Nobody touched it.

Because everyone knew what it contained could change everything.

Finally, Emily picked it up.

“Theodore wanted us to find this.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

“Because he thinks he’s untouchable.””

She pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

Ethan’s mother.

My heart stopped.

“Richard, if you’re hearing this, then I’m gone.””

Ethan immediately covered his mouth.

Hearing his mother’s voice after two years broke something inside him.

The recording continued.

“I need you to listen carefully.””

A pause.

“I discovered Theodore’s plan.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She closed her eyes.

“Your father-in-law was using our company accounts to hide illegal transfers.””

Theodore.

The real beginning.

“I confronted him.””

Another pause.

“And that was when I learned James was involved.””

I tightened my fists.

James.

The man I trusted.

“I knew they wanted access to Richard’s accounts.””

Her voice became softer.

“But I didn’t know how far they would go.””

The recording crackled.

Then:

“The night of the accident…”

Everyone froze.

“I wasn’t alone.””

My breathing stopped.

Someone was with her.

“James followed me.””

Ethan looked at me.

I listened.

“He told me Richard would never believe me.””

My hands shook.

“He said Theodore had a plan. A plan to make Richard look unstable and irresponsible.””

The exact plan.

The exact lies.

Then came the sentence that changed everything.

“But someone else was there.””

A long pause.

“Vanessa.””

Vanessa covered her face.

I looked at her.

The recording continued.

“She begged me not to tell Richard.””

My chest tightened.

“Because she knew her father was dangerous.””

Vanessa started crying.

“I was scared,” she whispered.

Nobody responded.

The recording played on.

“She didn’t hurt me.””

A pause.

“She saved me.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Confused.

“What?””

The recording continued.

“The accident wasn’t caused by Vanessa. She tried to stop them.””

Everyone was silent.

“She pushed me away from the car.””

Ethan looked shocked.

“What?””

His mother’s voice broke.

“But she was too late.””

I sat down slowly.

Two years of hatred.

Two years of believing Vanessa had been part of it.

And the truth was more complicated.

“She made a mistake,” the recording said.

“She was afraid. She chose silence.””

Vanessa cried harder.

The recording continued.

“But the person who caused the crash was Theodore.””

My hands clenched.

“He sabotaged the car.””

The room went silent.

“He wanted me gone because I knew too much.””

Then the final words came.

“Richard, protect Ethan.””

A pause.

“And forgive Vanessa if she tells you the truth.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“I tried to tell you.””

I looked at her.

“When?””

“The night after the funeral.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked broken.

“I went to your office.””

I remembered.

That night.

I remembered Vanessa crying.

I remembered refusing to talk because I was angry.

Because I thought she was grieving differently.

“I was going to tell you everything.””

Her voice cracked.

“But Theodore called.””

She looked down.

“He threatened Lily.””

I closed my eyes.

So many things had been hidden.

So many choices made out of fear.

Then my phone rang.

Detective Miller.

I answered.

“Richard.””

Her voice was urgent.

“We found Theodore.””

“Where?””

A pause.

Then:

“At the old company headquarters.””

My body went still.

“Why there?””

Her answer was quiet.

“Because he wasn’t trying to escape.””

I frowned.

“Then what was he doing?””

“He was destroying evidence.””

I grabbed my jacket.

“Where is James?””

Another pause.

“We found him too.””

My heart stopped.

“Alive?””

“Yes.””

“Then why do you sound worried?””

Detective Miller took a breath.

“Because James told us something.””

“What?””

“He said Theodore wasn’t the final person in control.””

I froze.

“Who is?””

May you like

Her answer came slowly.

“Someone inside your family.””
