Chapter 11: The Truth She Left Behind
The photo stayed on my screen.
I couldn’t look away.
Ethan’s mother was standing outside a restaurant.
She looked happy.
Healthy.
Alive.
And next to her was Vanessa’s father.
My former father-in-law.
A man who had died five years earlier.
Impossible.
I showed Detective Miller.
She frowned.
“Are you sure that’s him?””
“Yes.””
“But he’s dead.””
“I know.””
She studied the image.
“It could be edited.””
“No.””
I pointed at the corner.
“There’s a timestamp.””
Three days before the accident.
Before Ethan’s mother died.
Before everything changed.
I called the number that sent the photo.
No answer.
A voicemail appeared.
I pressed play.
A distorted voice spoke.
“You’ve spent years looking for the wrong enemy.””
The message continued.
“The person who destroyed your family is closer than you think.””
Then silence.
Detective Miller looked at me.
“Someone wants you afraid.””
I nodded.
“But they also want me to find something.””
That afternoon, we searched through Ethan’s mother’s old belongings.
Things we had stored away after her death.
Photos.
Letters.
Books.
Memories.
Ethan sat quietly beside me.
Then he pulled out a small wooden box.
“Dad.””
I looked over.
“I remember this.””
He opened it.
Inside was a necklace.
A few old photographs.
And a small key.
The same key from his phone.
4729.
My heart jumped.
“There’s something else.””
He removed a folded piece of paper.
It was old.
Worn.
His mother’s handwriting.
*The truth is hidden where our family began.*
I read it again.
Where our family began.
I knew exactly where.
The old house.
The house where Ethan was born.
The house we sold after his mother died.
But someone had bought it.
Years ago.
I called the real estate records.
An hour later, I had the answer.
The current owner?
James Carter.
My blood ran cold.
“He bought the house?””
Detective Miller nodded.
“Six months after the accident.””
Why?
Why would James buy the place where Ethan’s mother lived?
Unless he was searching for something.
We drove there immediately.
The house looked abandoned.
The grass was overgrown.
The windows were covered.
But the door was unlocked.
Inside, everything was dusty.
But not untouched.
Someone had been there recently.
We searched room by room.
Then Ethan stopped.
“Dad.””
He was standing in the old bedroom.
His mother’s bedroom.
“What?””
He pointed at the wall.
“There.””
A small crack behind a bookshelf.
I moved it.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Inside was a metal box.
The key fit perfectly.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Photos.
And a small voice recorder.
I pressed play.
Ethan’s mother’s voice filled the room.
“If you’re hearing this, then I was right.””
I closed my eyes.
“Someone close to us is dangerous.””
A pause.
“I discovered they were using Richard’s company to move money.””
I looked at Detective Miller.
She listened carefully.
“I tried to confront them.””
Another pause.
“That was my mistake.””
My heart stopped.
“I should have gone to Richard immediately.””
The recording crackled.
Then came the words that changed everything.
“The person helping them is not James.””
Ethan looked at me.
“Then who?””
The recording continued.
“The person helping them is someone Richard trusts completely.””
My hands tightened.
Then the recording ended.
The battery died.
“No.””
I hit the button.
Nothing.
Detective Miller examined it.
“We may be able to recover the rest.””
I looked through the documents.
Then I found something.
A contract.
A partnership agreement.
Between James Carter…
And another person.
The second signature was hidden under a folded corner.
I moved the paper.
And my entire body went numb.
Because the signature belonged to someone who had been standing beside me through this entire nightmare.
Someone who had acted like they wanted the truth.
May you like
Someone who had helped me investigate.
Detective Sarah Miller.
