Chapter 9: The Signature That Changed Everything

I stared at the document.

My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

Emily’s name.

Her signature.

A legal agreement.

Giving up her rights as a mother.

“No.””

The word came out quietly.

Vanessa watched me.

“You see?””

I looked up.

“You forged this.””

Her expression hardened.

“You always did underestimate me.””

The confidence in her voice bothered me.

Because people who were lying usually rushed to defend themselves.

Vanessa didn’t.

She was prepared.

“You expect me to believe Emily signed away her children?””

“She did.””

“Why?””

Vanessa leaned back.

“Because she knew she wasn’t capable of raising them.””

I grabbed the paper.

“You’re lying.””

“You weren’t there.””

“I know Emily.””

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice became softer.

“You knew the woman she wanted you to see.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because a small part of me wondered.

What else didn’t I know?

Vanessa saw my hesitation.

And she used it.

“She left you once.””

I looked at her.

“She could leave again.””

“She didn’t leave.””

“Then why wasn’t she here?””

I didn’t answer.

Because that was the question haunting me.

For seven years.

Why?

Vanessa stood up.

“You think I’m the villain because you saw one moment where I lost control.””

I looked at her.

“You hit my children.””

Her face tightened.

“I made mistakes.””

“Mistakes don’t leave children afraid to eat.””

For the first time, she looked wounded.

Then angry.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

I shook my head.

“No. I don’t.””

I pointed at the document.

“But I know you’ve been lying.””

She walked toward me.

“Daniel, I could have walked away.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

Her eyes locked onto mine.

“Because I love you.””

The words should have meant something.

But they didn’t.

Not anymore.

A knock came from the front door.

We both turned.

I walked toward it.

Vanessa grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I looked at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why?””

Her silence answered.

I opened the door.

A woman stood outside.

Older than I remembered.

Tears in her eyes.

Emily.

Behind her was a man holding a folder.

Marcus.

Vanessa stepped backward.

For the first time since I had known her…

She looked afraid.

Emily looked past me.

Her eyes landed on Vanessa.

“You told him I abandoned my children.””

Vanessa said nothing.

Emily’s voice shook.

“But you never told him the truth.””

I looked between them.

“What truth?””

Emily stepped forward.

“The reason I disappeared.””

My heart pounded.

“What reason?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then back at me.

“Because seven years ago…”

She swallowed hard.

“Vanessa tried to make sure I never came back.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus opened the folder.

Inside was a police report.

An old one.

From seven years ago.

He handed it to me.

I read the first line.

And my entire world changed.

“Attempted vehicle tampering investigation…”

I looked at Vanessa.

She slowly lowered her eyes.

Because she knew.

May you like

The secret she had hidden for seven years…

Was finally coming out.
