Chapter 11: The Plan Behind The Marriage
My lawyer’s office smelled like old paper and coffee.
Normally, that smell made me feel calm.
Not that day.
Nothing felt normal anymore.
My attorney, James, placed a folder on the desk.
“Daniel, before we talk about this, I need you to understand something.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“This is bigger than divorce.””
I opened the folder.
Inside were financial documents.
Transfers.
Payments.
Names.
My eyes stopped on one.
Marcus Reed.
But not the payments Vanessa sent him.
Payments Vanessa received.
“What is this?””
James pointed to the pages.
“Vanessa has been moving money through several accounts.””
“How much?””
He hesitated.
“That depends on what we uncover.””
I looked at him.
“Tell me.””
He sighed.
“Over two hundred thousand dollars.””
I felt numb.
“She stole from me?””
“Possibly.””
“Possibly?””
“We need more evidence.””
I leaned back.
Two hundred thousand dollars.
While my children were being told they couldn’t eat.
While Sophie apologized for touching pizza.
I felt something inside me break.
Then James placed another document on the table.
“This is the part you need to see.””
I read it.
And my hands went cold.
A life insurance policy.
The same one I had seen before.
But this time there was more information.
A second policy.
And a third.
“All created after your marriage,” James said.
I looked up.
“Why?””
“That’s what we’re investigating.””
I stared at the documents.
A horrible thought entered my mind.
“What happens if something happens to me?””
James didn’t answer immediately.
He didn’t need to.
I already knew.
The money.
The children.
The house.
Everything.
I drove back to Rachel’s house.
The moment I walked in, Sophie ran toward me.
“Daddy!””
I picked her up.
She held onto me tightly.
Noah stood behind her.
Watching.
Like he was waiting to see if I would disappear.
I hugged him too.
“I’m not going anywhere.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“Promise?””
“I promise.””
That night, after the children went to sleep, Emily and I sat on the porch.
For the first time in seven years, we talked.
Really talked.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For believing her.””
I sighed.
“I should have noticed something.””
She shook her head.
“She was careful.””
I looked at the house.
“The kids missed you.””
Emily covered her face.
“I thought they hated me.””
“They didn’t.””
She cried silently.
Then she asked:
“Did Vanessa ever tell them I left?””
I didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Emily closed her eyes.
“She wanted them to hate me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
I thought about everything.
The money.
The control.
The lies.
Then I remembered something.
“She said something.””
“What?””
“She said you weren’t the only person who disappeared.””
Emily looked confused.
“What does that mean?””
Before I could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
I answered.
A man’s voice spoke.
“Daniel, you need to listen carefully.””
“Who is this?””
“You don’t know me.””
“Then why are you calling?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because I worked for Vanessa.””
My grip tightened.
“What?””
“I helped her build the plan.””
Emily looked at me.
The man continued.
“But I couldn’t stay quiet anymore.””
“Why?””
His voice lowered.
“Because Vanessa wasn’t planning to divorce you.””
I stood up.
“Then what was she planning?””
The man took a breath.
May you like
And said:
“She was planning to make you disappear.””
