Chapter 10: The Accident That Wasn’t An Accident
I read the police report again.
Then again.
Because my mind kept rejecting the words.
Attempted vehicle tampering investigation.
Seven years ago.
The same year Emily disappeared.
The same year Vanessa entered my life.
I looked at Emily.
“What happened?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I tried to tell you.””
“Then tell me now.””
Vanessa stood near the doorway.
Silent.
Watching.
Emily took a deep breath.
“After Sophie was born, I was recovering at the hospital. Vanessa was one of the nurses assigned to me.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She didn’t move.
“She started visiting even after her shifts ended,” Emily continued.
“At first, I thought she was just being kind.””
Emily laughed bitterly.
“I was wrong.””
I looked at the report.
“What did she do?””
Emily looked down.
“She started telling me things.””
“What things?””
“That you were unhappy.””
My chest tightened.
“She said I was holding you back. That you were tired of taking care of me.””
I shook my head.
“I never said that.””
“I know that now.””
Her voice cracked.
“But at the time, I was sick. I was scared. I had just had a baby. I believed things I shouldn’t have.””
Vanessa finally spoke.
“You were always insecure.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Emily looked at her.
“You manipulated me.””
Vanessa smiled coldly.
“I gave you a reality check.””
“No.””
Emily stepped forward.
“You destroyed my confidence.””
I watched Vanessa carefully.
The woman standing in front of me didn’t look like someone who had accidentally hurt people.
She looked like someone who believed she was right.
Marcus handed me another document.
“Read the second page.””
I turned it over.
It was a statement from a mechanic.
My eyes moved down the page.
“Brake line damage.””
My breathing stopped.
“What?””
Marcus nodded.
“The police suspected someone had tampered with Emily’s vehicle.””
I looked at Emily.
“You were driving when this happened?””
She nodded.
“I was leaving the hospital.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her eyes filled with pain.
“Because Vanessa convinced me you would blame me.””
“That makes no sense.””
“She told me you would say I was irresponsible. She told me if you found out, you would fight for custody.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“You threatened her.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I warned her.””
“You made her afraid of me.””
“She already doubted herself.””
I felt sick.
“You used that.””
Vanessa looked away.
For the first time, she didn’t deny it.
I stepped closer.
“Did you damage her car?””
Silence.
The room became painfully quiet.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“No.””
But it came too quickly.
Like a prepared answer.
Emily looked at her.
“You never changed.””
Vanessa laughed softly.
“You still think you’re the victim.””
Emily’s face tightened.
“You tried to take my family.””
“No.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I tried to protect it.””
I stared at her.
“How?””
Her eyes became emotional.
“Because you loved me.””
That sentence was terrifying.
Not because it was true.
Because she believed it.
She believed love gave her permission.
The children.
The lies.
The manipulation.
Everything.
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A message from my lawyer.
A lawyer I had contacted that morning.
The message contained one sentence.
“Daniel, you need to come in immediately. We found something in Vanessa’s financial records.””
I looked at Emily.
Then Marcus.
Then Vanessa.
“There’s more.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“What did you find?””
I looked at her.
“I’m about to find out.””
I walked toward the door.
But before I left, Vanessa said something that stopped me.
“Daniel.””
I turned.
Her voice was quiet.
Almost sad.
“If you leave this house tonight…”
She paused.
“You may never get the children back.””
I stared at her.
Because that was the first time she stopped pretending.
May you like
The mask was gone.
And underneath it was a threat.
