Chapter 7: The Mother I Thought I Lost

I read the message again.

“Your children’s mother is alive.””

The words felt impossible.

Like someone had reached into my memories and ripped them apart.

For seven years, I had believed I knew the story.

My first wife, Emily, had died after complications from a medical condition shortly after Sophie was born.

That was what everyone told me.

That was what I accepted.

I had buried her.

I had cried for her.

I had raised our children while carrying the pain of losing her.

And now someone was telling me she was alive.

I looked at Vanessa.

“You knew?””

Her face remained still.

Too still.

“That’s not the question you should be asking.””

My stomach dropped.

“Where is she?””

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“You’re really going to believe a random message?””

“You knew her name.””

Silence.

“You knew before I said anything.””

Her jaw tightened.

“Daniel, there are things about Emily you don’t know.””

I stepped closer.

“Then tell me.””

She looked away.

“Not here.””

“Why?””

“Because the children are upstairs.””

I froze.

The fact that she cared about them hearing suddenly felt like another manipulation.

“You mean you don’t want them hearing the truth.””

Her eyes sharpened.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

“Neither do you.””

For the first time, Vanessa looked genuinely angry.

“You think you’re some hero because you walked in on one bad moment?””

I stared at her.

“One bad moment?””

Her voice rose.

“You weren’t here every day. You don’t know what it’s like.””

“I know what I saw.””

“You saw five minutes.””

“And those five minutes showed me enough.””

Her face changed.

Something cold appeared.

“Fine.””

She grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.””

I blocked the door.

“Not until you explain.””

“You can’t keep me here.””

“I’m not trying to.””

I stepped aside.

“But if you walk out, don’t expect me to believe another word you say.””

She stared at me.

Then whispered:

“You really should ask Emily why she abandoned you.””

The door slammed.

I stood there.

Alone.

Except I wasn’t.

Because upstairs, two children were sleeping in rooms where they had learned to be afraid.

I went to my office and called the number.

The phone rang twice.

Then someone answered.

A woman’s voice.

“Daniel?””

My heart stopped.

I knew that voice.

Even after seven years.

Even after all the pain.

“Emily?””

There was a long silence.

Then a quiet sob.

“I never thought I would hear you say my name again.””

I gripped the phone.

“You’re alive.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

That single word carried seven years of anger.

Seven years of confusion.

Seven years of questions.

“I wanted to tell you.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

“Because Vanessa threatened me.””

I stood up.

“What?””

Emily took a shaky breath.

“When I found out what she was doing, I tried to warn you.””

“What was she doing?””

“She was planning to take everything.””

My mind flashed back to the documents.

The insurance policy.

The custody papers.

“Explain.””

Emily’s voice trembled.

“After Sophie was born, I became sick. I was hospitalized. Vanessa was my nurse.””

I froze.

Vanessa.

A nurse.

Emily continued.

“She became obsessed with our family. She kept telling me you deserved someone stronger.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“She told me I was failing you.””

“That’s insane.””

“I thought so too.””

“Then why did you disappear?””

Emily was silent.

When she spoke again, her voice was broken.

“Because she showed me fake documents.””

“What documents?””

“She convinced me that you wanted full custody. She told me if I fought, she would make sure I never saw the children again.””

I closed my eyes.

“And you believed her?””

“I was sick. I was scared. I thought I was protecting them.””

I looked toward the stairs.

My children.

The years I lost.

“Where are you now?””

“I’m in Michigan.””

“Why contact me now?””

Another pause.

“Because I saw the news.””

“What news?””

“About your company. About your family.””

My breathing slowed.

“What exactly did you see?””

Emily whispered:

“Daniel… Vanessa isn’t just trying to take your money.””

A chill ran through me.

“What is she trying to do?””

May you like

Emily answered softly.

“She’s trying to replace you.””
