Chapter 3: The Hidden Door

I didn’t sleep.

Not even for a minute.

The video played over and over on my phone.

Vanessa stood outside the apartment building, laughing with a man who looked comfortable around her.

Too comfortable.

But the worst part wasn’t the picture.

It wasn’t even the man.

It was the date.

The video was recorded three days earlier.

While I was away on my business trip.

I sat at the kitchen table until sunrise, listening to the quiet sounds of my children sleeping upstairs.

My mind kept returning to the same question.

How long had I been missing this?

When Sophie asked if I was leaving again, she wasn’t asking about tomorrow.

She was asking if she would be abandoned.

The next morning, I made breakfast.

Something I hadn’t done in months because Vanessa always insisted she handled the mornings.

Pancakes.

Eggs.

Fresh fruit.

Simple things.

But when Noah walked into the kitchen, he stopped.

“Is this for us?””

I looked at him.

“Of course it is.””

He stared at the plate.

Then looked at me.

“Are we allowed?””

That question broke something inside me.

“Buddy, you never need permission to eat breakfast.””

He nodded slowly.

Sophie climbed onto her chair.

“Can I have strawberries?””

I smiled.

“You can have all of them.””

She looked toward the hallway.

Then lowered her voice.

“What if Vanessa gets mad?””

I pushed the plate closer.

“Your dad is here.””

For the first time in days, both children smiled.

Then Vanessa walked in.

She looked surprised.

“You made breakfast?””

“Yes.””

She grabbed a coffee cup.

“You’re making this a bigger deal than it is.””

I looked at her.

“You hit Noah.””

“He interrupted me.””

“He was protecting his sister.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“They’re too sensitive.””

I stood up.

“No. They’re children.””

Her expression changed.

For a second, I saw something I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Fear.

“You’re really doing this?””

“Doing what?””

“Looking at me like I’m the enemy.””

I almost answered.

Then my phone buzzed.

The unknown number.

Another message.

I opened it.

A bank statement appeared.

My heart stopped.

It showed a large transfer from our joint account.

Sent every month.

To someone named Marcus Reed.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who is Marcus?””

Her face changed instantly.

Just for a second.

But I saw it.

“You went through my phone?””

“No.””

I placed the phone on the table.

“I asked who Marcus is.””

She said nothing.

“Vanessa?””

She stood up.

“I have to go.””

“You’re not leaving this conversation.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You don’t get to control me.””

“I’m trying to understand why my wife is sending thousands of dollars to a man I’ve never heard of.””

The kitchen became silent.

Then Vanessa said something I never expected.

“He deserves that money.””

“Why?””

She grabbed her purse.

“Because he’s the reason I stayed.””

I felt like the air disappeared.

“What does that mean?””

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

Without turning around, she whispered:

“You should ask your children who they really belong to.””

The door slammed.

I stood there, frozen.

Because I knew Vanessa had just crossed a line.

But I also knew something worse.

She had just revealed that the secret in my house was much bigger than I thought.

And upstairs, hidden inside Noah’s backpack, I found a folded piece of paper with three words written in his handwriting:

“Daddy, don’t trust her.””
