Chapter 13: The Secret Emily Left Behind
I stared at Kevin.
“What does that mean?””
He looked nervous.
Like he had been carrying the answer for years.
“Daniel, before Vanessa ever met you, she knew who you were.””
I shook my head.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Kevin opened one of the files from the warehouse.
“She didn’t meet you by accident.””
My hands went cold.
I looked at the papers.
At first, they looked like random notes.
Dates.
Names.
Addresses.
Then I saw something.
My name.
Written at the top.
“She researched me?””
Kevin nodded.
“For months.””
“Why?””
He looked at Emily.
“Because of her.””
Emily stepped closer.
“Me?””
Kevin nodded.
“Vanessa knew about your marriage before she ever became part of your life.””
I looked at Emily.
She looked just as shocked.
“Why would she care about me?””
Kevin opened another file.
Inside was an old newspaper article.
The headline was about a family business acquisition.
My father’s company.
I frowned.
“What does this have to do with Emily?””
Kevin pointed at a name.
Emily’s father.
My eyes widened.
Emily looked over my shoulder.
“That’s impossible.””
Kevin shook his head.
“Your father-in-law was involved in a business deal with Daniel’s father years ago.””
I looked at Emily.
“You knew?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Kevin continued.
“Vanessa believed your family had something that belonged to hers.””
“What?””
He pulled out another document.
A legal agreement.
My name was on it.
Emily’s name was on it.
And another name.
My father.
“What is this?””
Emily read it carefully.
Then her face changed.
“Daniel…”
“What?””
She looked at me.
“My father had a trust.””
I stared.
“A trust?””
“Yes.””
Kevin nodded.
“That’s what Vanessa was after.””
I looked at him.
“You’re saying she married me for money?””
Kevin looked away.
“Not just money.””
“Then what?””
He pointed at the document.
“The trust only transfers when the children reach a certain age.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“The children?””
Kevin nodded.
“Your children.””
Silence filled the warehouse.
Everything suddenly connected.
The custody documents.
The life insurance policies.
The obsession with control.
She wasn’t just trying to take my children.
She was trying to control what belonged to them.
Emily covered her mouth.
“I can’t believe this.””
I looked at her.
“You never knew?””
“No.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Daniel, I loved you.””
I believed her.
Because after everything, that was the one thing I knew.
Emily had made mistakes.
But Vanessa had built an entire life around a lie.
My phone rang.
Rachel.
I answered immediately.
“Rachel?””
Her voice was shaking.
“Daniel…”
“What happened?””
“She’s gone.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
“The children.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“What?””
“I came back inside after taking the trash out. Vanessa was here.””
My grip tightened.
“What did she do?””
“She took them.””
I looked at Emily.
Then Marcus.
“When?””
“Ten minutes ago.””
I ended the call.
Everything became clear.
The warehouse.
The files.
The truth.
Vanessa knew we were close.
And she had made her final move.
We rushed outside.
As I started the car, Kevin grabbed my arm.
“Daniel.””
“What?””
“There’s something else.””
I looked at him.
“She didn’t just take the children.””
“What are you talking about?””
He swallowed.
“She left a message.””
My phone buzzed.
A video file.
I opened it.
Vanessa appeared on the screen.
Behind her was a room I recognized.
My house.
She was sitting calmly.
Almost peacefully.
“Daniel,” she said.
“You always wanted the truth.””
She smiled.
“Now you’re going to get it.””
Then she looked toward the camera.
And said:
“But first, you need to decide who you’re willing to lose.””
The video ended.
And underneath it was an address.
May you like
An address I knew.
Because it was the house where Emily and I had lived when our children were born.
