Chapter 12: The Witness

The phone almost slipped from my hand.

“What did you say?””

The man didn’t repeat himself.

He didn’t need to.

I had heard every word.

“She was planning to make you disappear.””

I walked away from Emily so the children wouldn’t hear.

“Who are you?””

“My name is Kevin.””

“Kevin what?””

“Kevin Harris.””

“Why should I believe you?””

“Because I have proof.””

My heart pounded.

“What proof?””

A pause.

Then:

“The original plan.””

I looked out into the dark street.

“What plan?””

“The plan Vanessa created before she married you.””

My stomach turned.

Before she married me.

Not after.

Before.

“Where are you?””

“Not somewhere safe.””

“Tell me.””

“I’ll send you an address.””

The call ended.

Within seconds, a location appeared on my phone.

I showed Emily.

Her face changed.

“What?””

“You know that place?””

She nodded slowly.

“It’s where Vanessa used to work.””

A warehouse.

Outside Chicago.

The next morning, Marcus came with us.

I didn’t want to go alone.

Not anymore.

The warehouse was abandoned.

Broken windows.

Rust-covered doors.

A place where secrets went to disappear.

We entered carefully.

Inside, we found boxes.

Old files.

Photographs.

Documents.

Marcus opened one.

Then froze.

“Daniel.””

I walked over.

Inside were pictures of me.

My house.

My children.

My daily schedule.

My entire life.

For years.

I felt sick.

“She was watching me.””

Marcus nodded.

“This wasn’t random.””

Then we heard a noise.

A man stepped out from behind a storage room.

“Daniel?””

I turned.

“Kevin?””

He looked terrified.

“You came.””

“Start talking.””

Kevin looked at the files.

“She hired me five years ago.””

“For what?””

“To gather information.””

“About me?””

He nodded.

“At first, she said she needed help protecting herself.””

“And later?””

His face dropped.

“Later I realized she wasn’t protecting herself.””

“What was she doing?””

Kevin swallowed.

“She was building a case against you.””

I looked at the documents.

“For custody?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed if you lost everything, you would finally choose her.””

I felt disgusted.

“She wanted me to choose her?””

Kevin nodded.

“She thought your children were the only reason you wouldn’t love her completely.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Vanessa.

I opened it.

A photo appeared.

My children.

Standing outside Rachel’s house.

My blood turned cold.

The message underneath said:

“Come home alone.””

Another message arrived.

“If you bring anyone…”

A second photo appeared.

Sophie crying.

The final words appeared.

“…you’ll regret it.””

I looked at Emily.

Then Marcus.

Then Kevin.

Because in that moment, I understood something.

Vanessa wasn’t hiding anymore.

She knew we were close.

And she had my children.

I grabbed my keys.

Emily grabbed my arm.

“Daniel, don’t go alone.””

I looked at her.

“She has Sophie and Noah.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“We go together.””

I nodded.

But before we left, Kevin said something that stopped me.

“Daniel.””

I turned.

“There’s one more thing.””

“What?””

He looked at the photo files.

“The reason Vanessa chose you.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

May you like

His answer made my entire body freeze.

“Because she knew your children weren’t the only thing you inherited from Emily.””
