Chapter 6: The Woman Behind The Smile
I drove home faster than I ever had.
Not because I was angry.
Because I was afraid.
Not for myself.
For my children.
Every second I spent away from that house felt like a mistake.
When I pulled into the driveway, Vanessa’s car was already there.
The lights were on.
I sat behind the wheel for a moment.
Trying to think.
The old Daniel would have walked inside and demanded answers.
The old Daniel believed honesty could fix anything.
But the man sitting in that car knew something different.
Sometimes the truth was hidden because someone wanted it hidden.
I walked inside.
Vanessa was standing in the living room.
Waiting.
“You met him.””
It wasn’t a question.
I closed the door behind me.
“Who?””
She smiled slightly.
“Don’t do that.””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
“Marcus.””
The way she said his name made me realize something.
She wasn’t afraid.
She was angry.
“You lied to me.””
Her expression changed.
“I protected you.””
“By hiding a husband?””
“He’s not part of my life anymore.””
“You told me you were never married.””
She looked away.
“Because I knew you wouldn’t understand.””
I laughed quietly.
“Understand what? That my wife had an entire life she erased?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You don’t know what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
Silence.
“Tell me why there are custody documents in your closet.””
Her face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
“You searched my things?””
“I found them.””
She looked toward the stairs.
“Did Noah tell you?””
I didn’t answer.
That was all the answer she needed.
Her expression became cold.
“I knew that boy would ruin everything.””
My chest tightened.
“Don’t talk about my son like that.””
“He’s always been against me.””
“He’s a child.””
“He’s not innocent.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
She walked to the kitchen counter.
“You think they tell you everything?””
“They told me enough.””
Vanessa smiled.
A small, bitter smile.
“You really believe them.””
I felt a chill.
Because that wasn’t the voice of someone defending herself.
That was the voice of someone preparing an attack.
“What are you saying?””
She picked up her phone.
“I’m saying maybe you should ask why your children’s biological mother left them.””
The room went silent.
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“You never wondered why you had full custody?””
I stared at her.
Because there was one thing she knew I had never questioned.
My children’s mother.
She had died.
At least, that was what I had always believed.
“She didn’t leave them,” I whispered.
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.
“You’re sure?””
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I looked down.
One sentence.
One name.
One truth I was not prepared for.
“Daniel, your children’s mother is alive.””
I looked up at Vanessa.
She was watching my face.
May you like
And the terrifying part was…
She already knew.
