Chapter 8: The Truth In The Basement

I barely slept that night.

Too many truths had appeared at once.

Emily was alive.

Vanessa had lied.

My children had been living with fear.

And somewhere beneath all of it was a plan I still couldn’t fully see.

The next morning, I made one decision.

I was going to protect my children first.

Everything else came second.

I woke Noah and Sophie early.

“We’re going somewhere today.””

Sophie looked worried.

“Are we moving?””

I knelt down.

“No, sweetheart.””

“Is Vanessa coming?””

I hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Noah noticed.

“Dad?””

I forced a smile.

“Everything is going to be okay.””

But even as I said it, I knew something.

Things had not been okay for a long time.

I took the children to my sister’s house.

My sister Rachel opened the door and immediately noticed something was wrong.

“What happened?””

I looked at my children.

Then back at her.

“I need you to keep them here for a while.””

Her expression changed.

“Daniel.””

“Please.””

She nodded.

She didn’t ask questions.

That was why I trusted her.

After leaving the children, I returned home.

Vanessa wasn’t there.

I used the opportunity to search.

Not because I wanted to invade her privacy.

Because she had already invaded my children’s safety.

I went straight to the office.

The place where Vanessa kept her documents.

Most of the drawers were empty.

Too organized.

Like someone had already cleaned them.

Then I noticed something.

A loose floorboard near the bookshelf.

I moved it.

Underneath was a small envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Old photographs.

Emily.

Vanessa.

And me.

Together.

My hands went cold.

Because these pictures were from before I ever met Vanessa.

How?

Then I found a letter.

The paper was old.

The handwriting was Emily’s.

“Daniel,

If you are reading this, something happened to me.

Please don’t trust Vanessa.

She was never just a friend.””

I stopped breathing.

A friend?

I kept reading.

“She has been watching our family for months. She knows everything about us.””

I turned the page.

Then I heard a noise.

A door closing.

I quickly put the letter back.

Too late.

Vanessa stood in the doorway.

Her face was expressionless.

“What are you doing?””

I looked at her.

“What are you doing with my family’s photos?””

She didn’t answer.

“That letter was from Emily.””

Still nothing.

“Wasn’t it?””

Vanessa slowly walked into the room.

“You called her.””

It wasn’t a question.

I stared at her.

“How did you know?””

She smiled faintly.

“Because I knew she would eventually come running.””

The calmness in her voice scared me.

“You knew she was alive.””

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“For seven years?””

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“How could you?””

Vanessa sat down.

“You wouldn’t understand.””

“Try me.””

She looked at the photos.

“She was weak.””

“Emily?””

“She couldn’t give you what you needed.””

My anger rose.

“You destroyed my family because you thought you could do better?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“No.””

Then she said something I would never forget.

“I saved your family from someone who was going to leave it.””

I stared.

“That’s a lie.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Ask yourself something, Daniel.””

“What?””

“If Emily loved those children so much…”

She paused.

“Why did she disappear?””

I had no answer.

And Vanessa knew it.

Then she reached into her purse.

She pulled out a document.

And placed it on the desk.

“Maybe you should read what she signed.””

I picked it up.

My hands shaking.

At the bottom of the page was Emily’s signature.

And the title above it was:

“Voluntary Relinquishment of Parental Rights.””
