Chapter 8: The Secret Lily Was Protecting
I stared at my father.
“What do you mean Lily?””
Dad rubbed his face.
“Your mother used to visit Lily when she was a baby. She loved that little girl more than anything.””
“But Lily was only two when Mom died.””
“I know.””
He looked toward the hallway.
“Your mother gave her something. She told me it was a keepsake and asked me not to throw it away.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“What did she give her?””
“A little wooden music box.””
I remembered it immediately.
It sat on Lily's bedroom shelf.
My mother had given it to her during one of her last visits.
Lily loved winding it before bed.
I'd never thought much about it.
I went upstairs.
Lily was sitting on her bed, arranging stuffed animals in a row.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
She smiled.
“Daddy, is Grandpa okay?””
“He's fine. Can I ask you something?””
She nodded.
“Do you still have the music box Grandma gave you?””
Her expression changed.
“Why?””
“Grandpa thinks Grandma left something special inside it.””
Lily looked toward her bedroom shelf.
Then she quietly picked it up.
“Mommy told me not to let anyone take this.””
My heart skipped.
“Did Mommy ask you about it?””
Lily nodded.
“She asked where Grandma put the little key.””
“What key?””
“The tiny silver key. Mommy said it belonged to her.””
I crouched beside her.
“Did you give it to her?””
“No. Grandma told me to keep it.””
Lily opened a small drawer in her bedside table.
Inside was a silver key attached to a pink ribbon.
She placed it in my palm.
“Grandma said it was a secret.””
I hugged her.
“You did the right thing, sweetheart.””
Downstairs, Dad examined the music box.
It was made of dark walnut wood, with a tiny brass ballerina inside.
He turned it over.
There was a small keyhole beneath the base.
The silver key fit perfectly.
A soft click sounded.
The bottom panel opened.
Inside was a small plastic container containing a memory card and a folded piece of paper.
Dad's hands began shaking.
“Your mother.””
I unfolded the paper.
For Marcus and Lily.
If this has been opened, then someone has finally started looking for the truth.
The memory card contains copies of the records I recovered. The original documents are somewhere safer.
Please don't trust anyone who tells you this is simply about money.
It isn't.
I inserted the memory card into my laptop.
A folder appeared.
Inside were scanned bank statements, photographs, audio recordings, and a video file dated March 2020.
One month before my mother's death.
I clicked the video.
My mother appeared on the screen.
She was sitting in her hospital room, wearing a pale blue sweater.
Her face was thinner than I remembered.
But her eyes were sharp.
“Marcus,” she began, “if you're watching this, I need you to understand that I didn't leave you with the financial situation your father believes.””
Dad covered his mouth.
My mother continued.
“I discovered that approximately $300,000 had been removed from the investment account. The withdrawals were authorized using documents carrying my signature, but I never signed them.””
She held up a sheet of paper.
“The money went through several companies. One of them was Brooks Family Holdings.””
I looked at Dad.
He stared at the screen.
My mother continued.
“I confronted Daniel Brooks. He told me he was acting on instructions from someone else. He refused to give me a name.””
She paused.
Then she looked directly into the camera.
“Vanessa visited me yesterday. She told me that if I continued investigating, Marcus could lose everything.””
I felt my stomach turn.
My mother took a breath.
“I don't know what Vanessa intends to do. But I know she has been telling people that Marcus is financially irresponsible. She's been trying to convince your father that you need help.””
Dad started crying.
“She lied to me,” he whispered.
My mother continued.
“I've made arrangements to protect the remaining money. The inheritance is no longer held in the account you know about. It's been placed into a trust with independent oversight.””
Then she leaned closer to the camera.
“And there's something else. Daniel isn't the only person involved.””
The video suddenly stopped.
I tried opening it again.
The file was corrupted beyond that point.
I checked the remaining documents.
There was a list of account numbers and a handwritten reference:
*TRUSTEE — R.W.*
Dad leaned forward.
“R.W.?””
I searched the files.
One document contained the full name.
*Robert William Hale.*
My father's full name.
But beneath it was a second name.
*Alternate trustee: Marcus Hale.*
I looked at Dad.
“Mom made us both trustees?””
He shook his head.
“I never signed anything like this.””
I opened the trust agreement.
The document stated that the funds could only be accessed jointly by both trustees, and only for the benefit of my daughter.
The remaining balance was listed as $1.5 million.
My mother's entire inheritance had not disappeared.
Someone had been trying to get control of it.
Then I noticed a final attachment.
An audio recording.
I pressed play.
At first, there was static.
Then my mother's voice.
“Robert, please don't let Vanessa know about the second trustee.””
A man's voice answered.
“I won't.””
I recognized it immediately.
It was my father.
Then my mother's voice became quieter.
“If something happens to me, make sure Marcus doesn't sign anything Daniel brings him.””
Dad went pale.
The recording continued.
“There's one person who can confirm everything. The person who opened the trust.””
Dad leaned closer.
“Who?””
My mother whispered a name.
“Rebecca Whitmore.””
I stopped the recording.
“Rebecca opened the trust?””
Dad nodded slowly.
“Harold must have helped arrange it.””
I looked at the screen.
Then I noticed the timestamp on the audio file.
It had been recorded just three days before my mother died.
I opened the last document.
It was a photograph of a handwritten note addressed to Rebecca.
If I don't make it through this week, please tell Marcus that the money was never the real danger.
I read the final sentence.
Daniel is afraid of the person who paid him.
Suddenly, someone knocked on the front door.
Three sharp knocks.
Dad looked at me.
“Are you expecting anyone?””
I checked the security camera.
Vanessa was standing on the porch.
But she wasn't alone.
May you like
Daniel stood beside her.
And behind them was a police officer.
