Chapter 12: The Price of Seeing My Daughter

I drove straight to Vanessa's old address.

Dad sat beside me, holding his phone and repeatedly calling Lily's tablet.

Rebecca remained on speaker.

“Marcus, listen carefully. The bank has flagged the withdrawal, but we don't yet have a legal freeze.””

“How long?””

“They're trying to stop it before the transaction clears.””

“Can we get an emergency order?””

“I'm contacting a judge now. But we need evidence that the account was opened fraudulently.””

I looked at the road.

“We have the documents.””

“We also need to establish that Lily's identity was used without your informed consent.””

“I never authorized any account.””

“Good. Keep saying that clearly. Don't sign anything Vanessa gives you.””

We turned onto a quiet residential street.

The house was a two-story brick property with white shutters and an overgrown front garden.

A black Mercedes sat in the driveway.

Daniel's car.

Dad looked at it.

“She's brought him here.””

I parked across the street.

“Stay in the truck.””

“Marcus—”

“Dad, I don't want you getting hurt.””

He shook his head.

“Your mother would never forgive me if I let you face this alone.””

I couldn't argue with that.

We walked to the front door.

Before I knocked, it opened.

Vanessa stood there wearing a cream sweater and holding a glass of wine.

“Marcus. You came.””

“Where's Lily?””

“Inside.””

I tried to walk past her.

She blocked the doorway.

“First, we talk.””

“Move.””

“Daniel has prepared some paperwork.””

“I don't care.””

She glanced toward Dad.

“Why did you bring him?””

“Because he's Lily's grandfather.””

Vanessa gave a short laugh.

“Of course.””

From inside the house, I heard Lily.

“Daddy!””

I pushed past Vanessa.

She grabbed my arm.

“Don't make this difficult!””

I pulled away.

“Where is my daughter?””

Daniel appeared at the end of the hallway.

He was holding a folder.

“Marcus, let's be reasonable.””

I ignored him and walked toward Lily's voice.

She was sitting on a sofa in the living room, clutching her stuffed rabbit.

When she saw me, she ran into my arms.

“Daddy!””

I hugged her tightly.

“Are you okay?””

She nodded.

“Mommy said we're going to move.””

I kissed her forehead.

“Not without talking to you first, sweetheart.””

Vanessa appeared behind us.

“She's confused. We've been discussing a change in living arrangements.””

I stood.

“You don't get to take her without informing me.””

“I'm her mother.””

“And I'm her father.””

Daniel placed the folder on the coffee table.

“Let's focus on the agreement.””

I looked at him.

“What's in it?””

“A temporary separation arrangement. Vanessa retains primary residential custody, and you agree not to interfere with her financial affairs.””

I almost laughed.

“You want me to sign away custody and stop investigating the stolen money?””

“That's not how I'd characterize it.””

“Then characterize it honestly.””

Vanessa put down her wineglass.

“Marcus, I am offering you a peaceful solution.””

I looked at her.

“You took money from my father. You forged my signature. You opened accounts in our daughter's name. And now you're using her to force me into signing a document.””

Her face hardened.

“You have no proof.””

I pulled out my phone.

“I have the bank statements, the loan applications, the trust records, and the memory card.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Where is that memory card?””

I smiled without humor.

“Not here.””

He looked at Vanessa.

She gave him a small nod.

Then Daniel said something that made my stomach tighten.

“Vanessa, I told you we should have taken the original folder.””

She turned sharply.

“Not now.””

I looked between them.

“So that's what this is about?””

Daniel reached for the folder.

“Sign the agreement, Marcus.””

“No.””

He leaned forward.

“Your daughter is going to have a very difficult life if you continue this.””

Dad stepped between us.

“Don't threaten my grandson.””

Daniel laughed.

“Your grandson? You can't even protect your own property.””

Dad's face changed.

Then he said something unexpected.

“I already signed away my property.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

Dad reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a folded document.

“Three weeks ago, I transferred ownership of my cabin into an irrevocable protective trust.””

I stared.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was afraid someone would try to take it.””

Vanessa's expression changed.

“That's impossible.””

Dad looked directly at her.

“Your mother-in-law taught me something before she died. Never leave something important where someone dishonest can reach it.””

He placed the document on the table.

“Rebecca Whitmore helped me arrange it.””

Daniel grabbed the paper.

He scanned the first page.

Then his face went pale.

“What is this?””

Dad smiled faintly.

“Your company no longer has any claim against my property.””

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“You told me the cabin was unsecured.””

She stared at him.

“I didn't know.””

For the first time, the two of them were openly turning against each other.

I took Lily's hand.

“We're leaving.””

Vanessa stepped in front of us.

“Not until Marcus signs.””

A knock sounded at the front door.

Then another.

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

“Who is that?””

I pulled out my phone.

“Police.””

Vanessa's face drained of color.

A uniformed officer entered with another investigator.

“Mr. Hale?””

“Yes.””

“We received a report regarding your daughter. We'd like to speak with everyone involved.””

Vanessa immediately began talking.

“This is a private family matter.””

The investigator looked at her.

“Ma'am, we also received information concerning a suspected fraudulent financial account registered in a minor's name.””

Daniel closed the folder.

“I want my attorney.””

The investigator nodded.

“You'll have that opportunity.””

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Mrs. Hale, we need to ask you about a pending withdrawal request for approximately $620,000.””

Vanessa stared at him.

I held Lily's hand tighter.

The investigator continued.

“The bank has temporarily suspended the transaction pending verification.””

Vanessa turned toward Daniel.

“You said the money had already been moved!””

Daniel's expression went rigid.

“Keep your voice down.””

“You told me it was done!””

I looked at him.

“Where did you move the money?””

Neither answered.

Then Lily tugged my sleeve.

“Daddy?””

I crouched.

“What is it?””

She looked toward the stairs.

“I heard Uncle Daniel talking to Mommy last night.””

My stomach tightened.

“What did he say?””

Lily lowered her voice.

“He said if the bank stopped the money, they would use the other account.””

“What other account?””

She pointed toward Daniel's briefcase.

“The one with Grandma's name.””

I looked at Daniel.

He immediately grabbed his briefcase.

The investigator stepped forward.

“Sir, put that down.””

Daniel froze.

The briefcase slipped from his hand and hit the floor.

A stack of papers scattered across the carpet.

One page landed near my shoes.

I picked it up.

At the top was the name of a financial institution.

Beneath it was an account number.

The account holder was listed as:

*ELEANOR HALE — DECEASED.*

My mother's name.

I looked at the balance.

$1,180,000.

But the date of the most recent transaction was yesterday.

I turned toward Rebecca, who was still on speakerphone.

“Rebecca, can a deceased person's account still be active?””

Her voice became urgent.

“Marcus, that's not an ordinary account. Don't let anyone touch those documents.””

I stared at the account balance.

“Why?””

She took a breath.

“Because that is the original inheritance account your mother was trying to protect.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Her face had gone completely white.

Then Rebecca added one final sentence.

“Marcus, the account has only one authorized signatory.””

I swallowed.

“Who?””

May you like

Rebecca's answer changed everything.

“Your wife.””
