Chapter 11: The Account in My Daughter's Name

I felt the blood drain from my face.

“What did you just say?””

Peter looked at Dad, then back at me.

“The account is registered under Lily's name. Daniel used her birth certificate and Social Security information to create a custodial investment account.””

I gripped the edge of the table.

“How much money?””

“About $620,000.””

Dad stood abruptly.

“That's my granddaughter's money!””

Peter nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why did you let him use her identity?””

Peter looked down.

“I didn't know about that part until last month.””

I almost stood up.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I'm telling you what I know.””

I pulled out my phone.

“Rebecca needs to hear this.””

I called her and put the phone on speaker.

She answered immediately.

“Marcus?””

“Peter says Daniel opened an account using Lily's identity.””

There was a sharp intake of breath.

“What account?””

“He says it's holding approximately $620,000.””

Rebecca was silent.

Then she said, “Peter, is that money connected to the original trust?””

“Yes.””

“Then you need to explain exactly how it got there.””

Peter looked uncomfortable.

“Daniel moved it through three different companies. The final account was opened using a custodial registration.””

Rebecca's voice became firm.

“Do you have the account number?””

Peter handed me another folded document.

I read the first few digits.

Rebecca interrupted.

“Stop. Don't read that aloud. Send me a photograph through the secure channel I provided.””

I did.

She examined it.

Then she spoke again.

“Marcus, I recognize this account.””

“How?””

“My father flagged it six months before he died. He believed someone was using a minor's identity to conceal the actual owner of the funds.””

Dad sat down slowly.

“Can we freeze it?””

“Possibly. We need the bank's fraud department and a court order. But there's something else.””

“What?””

“The account has a designated successor custodian.””

I frowned.

“Who?””

Rebecca paused.

“Vanessa Hale.””

I stared at the paper.

Of course.

She hadn't simply stolen money.

She had positioned herself to control the money intended for her own daughter.

Dad shook his head.

“Lily doesn't deserve this.””

I looked at Peter.

“Did Vanessa know about the account?””

“Yes.””

“Did Daniel?””

Peter nodded.

“Daniel created it.””

I took a breath.

“Then I need the complete records.””

Peter reached into his jacket and produced a small USB drive.

“Everything I have is here.””

I didn't take it immediately.

“What's the catch?””

He looked embarrassed.

“There's no catch.””

“Uncle Peter, you've lied to my family for years. Forgive me if I don't accept gifts without checking what's inside.””

He pushed the drive closer.

“Fair.””

Dad looked at him.

“Why didn't you come to us?””

Peter's eyes filled.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“You were ashamed?””

Dad's voice cracked.

“Your sister died believing she had failed to protect her son. You were alive, Peter. You could have told us everything.””

Peter covered his face.

“I know.””

For the first time, he looked genuinely broken.

I took the drive.

But before I could stand, Peter grabbed my wrist.

“There's one more thing.””

I pulled away.

“What?””

“Daniel has a copy of your mother's original video.””

My stomach tightened.

“He has the full recording?””

Peter nodded.

“And he knows about the final section.””

“What final section?””

Peter looked around the restaurant.

“Your mother named the person who helped her discover the fraud.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

Peter hesitated.

Then he said:

“Vanessa.””

I frowned.

“That doesn't make sense.””

“It does if you understand how it started. Vanessa originally worked with your mother. She helped uncover the first suspicious transfers. Then Daniel approached her.””

I looked at Dad.

He seemed stunned.

Peter continued.

“Your mother trusted Vanessa at first. She thought the woman was helping her protect you. But Daniel convinced Vanessa that she could get a much larger share if she cooperated.””

“So Vanessa betrayed my mother?””

“Yes.””

“And then married me?””

Peter nodded.

“She thought she could get access to the trust through you.””

My hands were shaking.

I had believed my marriage began with a chance meeting at a charity event.

Now I was discovering that the woman I had built my life around had known my mother, known about the inheritance, and possibly approached me because of it.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Vanessa.

*We need to talk about Lily. Come home alone. Daniel has something you need to see.*

I showed Rebecca.

She immediately called.

“Marcus, do not go anywhere alone.””

“Why?””

“Because Peter just told us about the account. If Vanessa knows you've found it, she may try to move the money.””

I looked at Dad.

“We need to get Lily.””

We hurried back to the car.

But when I called our neighbor, she didn't answer.

I called again.

Nothing.

Then Lily's tablet appeared online.

A location notification showed it moving away from our neighborhood.

I immediately called the police.

“My eight-year-old daughter may have been taken without my permission.””

The dispatcher asked for her description and last known location.

I gave her everything.

Then my phone rang.

Vanessa.

I answered.

“Where is Lily?””

Her voice was calm.

“She's with me.””

“Bring her home.””

“She is home, Marcus. She's with her mother.””

“You weren't supposed to pick her up.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You don't get to decide that anymore.””

“Put her on the phone.””

A few seconds passed.

Then Lily's voice came through.

“Daddy?””

“Sweetheart, are you okay?””

“I'm okay.””

“Where are you?””

She hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Daddy, we're at Mommy's old house.””

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa's old house was a property she'd claimed she sold years ago.

“Lily, listen to me. Stay where you are.””

Vanessa took the phone back.

“You have until tomorrow morning to sign the separation agreement.””

“I'm not signing anything.””

“Then you won't see your daughter again until a judge decides what's best.””

I heard a door close.

Then Daniel's voice.

“Vanessa, tell him about the account.””

She hesitated.

I heard him continue.

“Tell him the money is gone.””

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

Dad looked at me.

“What happened?””

I swallowed.

“She's using Lily to force me to sign.””

Rebecca called again.

“Marcus, I've spoken to the bank. The account is still active.””

I closed my eyes.

“Can they freeze it?””

“They're preparing an emergency fraud review.””

“Then hurry.””

May you like

Rebecca's next words made my heart stop.

“There's a withdrawal request pending for the entire $620,000.””
