Chapter 14: My Father's Final Confession
“Dad?””
He looked up.
I held out my phone.
“Rebecca says Mom believed you were behind the missing money.””
Dad didn't move.
The silence between us stretched.
Then he slowly sat on the low brick wall beside the driveway.
“I wondered when this would come out.””
My stomach tightened.
“What?””
Dad rubbed his hands together.
“I didn't steal your mother's money, Marcus. But I did something I should have told you years ago.””
“Then tell me now.””
He looked at Lily.
“Can you take her inside for a moment?””
I called our neighbor, who had come to collect Lily earlier, and arranged for her to stay there while Dad and I talked.
When we were alone, Dad finally spoke.
“Your mother discovered the first missing transfers in January 2020. She came to me with the bank records.””
“And?””
“She believed someone had been using my credentials to access the investment account.””
I frowned.
“Your credentials?””
Dad nodded.
“Someone had copied my driver's license and used my information to create authorization documents.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
He looked toward the house.
“Peter.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“My uncle?””
“Yes. He had access to our old financial files. Your mother discovered that he'd been working with Daniel.””
“But Rebecca said you were involved.””
Dad lowered his head.
“Because I signed one document.””
“What document?””
“A temporary loan agreement. Peter told me the money would be used to protect the investment account from a creditor. I believed him.””
“How much?””
“Three hundred thousand dollars.””
I stepped backward.
“Dad, that's the exact amount that disappeared.””
“I know.””
“You signed away the money?””
“I thought it was a temporary transfer. Your mother discovered what had happened and confronted me.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
He wiped his eyes.
“Because I was ashamed. Your mother was dying, and I had helped the people who were stealing from her.””
“Did Mom forgive you?””
He nodded.
“She did. But she made me promise to help recover every dollar.””
I sat beside him.
“Then why did you let Vanessa take money from you?””
He looked at me.
“Because she told me you needed help. I thought I was finally doing something right.””
My anger softened, but it didn't disappear.
“Dad, you could have called me.””
“I know.””
“You should have.””
He nodded.
We sat quietly for a moment.
Then my phone buzzed.
Rebecca had sent a photograph of a document.
It was a signed statement from my mother, dated three days before she died.
The statement explained that the missing $300,000 had been moved into a temporary recovery account.
The account was controlled by an independent trustee.
The trustee's name was Rebecca Whitmore.
My mother's final instruction was clear.
The money was to be returned to the original inheritance trust, divided between me and Lily.
I called Rebecca.
“Does this mean the $300,000 was recovered?””
“Not entirely. Approximately $220,000 was recovered. The remaining $80,000 was never accounted for.””
I looked at Dad.
“Can we prove who took it?””
“Yes. Your mother's records show transfers to Peter and Daniel.””
“And Vanessa?””
Rebecca hesitated.
“There's one final recording.””
She sent me a file.
I pressed play.
My mother's voice filled the quiet driveway.
“Vanessa, I know what you and Daniel have been doing.””
A second voice answered.
Vanessa.
“You don't understand.””
“I understand perfectly. You helped me identify the missing money, then decided to take some for yourself.””
Vanessa sounded angry.
“Daniel said it was the only way.””
“Then Daniel is using you.””
There was a long silence.
My mother continued.
“I was prepared to forgive you. But I won't allow you to destroy my son's future.””
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“He doesn't love me.””
“He doesn't know you yet.””
My mother took a breath.
“If you genuinely care about Marcus, tell him the truth.””
Vanessa began crying.
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because Daniel has something on me.””
My mother sounded frightened.
“What?””
Then the recording ended.
I played it again.
Daniel had something on Vanessa.
Something powerful enough to make her continue the scheme.
I called Rebecca.
“Can you recover the rest of the recording?””
“I'm trying. The original file was damaged.””
“Can you find out what Daniel has on her?””
Rebecca hesitated.
“Marcus, I think it has something to do with Vanessa's first marriage.””
I remembered the marriage certificate.
“Bigamy?””
“Possibly. But there's more. The divorce petition was filed, then withdrawn. Daniel and Vanessa never legally separated.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then our marriage was invalid?””
“That's something the family court will need to determine. But it raises serious questions.””
Before I could respond, an unknown number called.
I answered.
A man's voice came through.
“Marcus Hale?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Detective Collins. I'm handling the financial fraud investigation.””
“What happened?””
“We've recovered a deleted email from Daniel Brooks's business account.””
I gripped the phone.
“What does it say?””
“It contains instructions concerning your father's property, your mother's inheritance, and a payment to Vanessa.””
“How much?””
“Five hundred thousand dollars.””
I looked at Dad.
“Who was supposed to receive it?””
The detective paused.
“Your wife.””
“And who authorized the payment?””
Another pause.
Then he said:
“Your father.””
I stared at Dad.
He looked as confused as I felt.
“Detective, that's impossible. My father didn't authorize anything.””
“Mr. Hale, the document contains his signature and a recorded digital confirmation.””
Dad slowly shook his head.
“I never signed that.””
The detective continued.
“We're investigating whether the authorization was forged. But we need you to come in tomorrow morning.””
I ended the call.
Dad looked at me.
“Marcus, I swear to you. I didn't authorize that money.””
I believed him.
But I also knew we needed proof.
Then my phone buzzed again.
A new email.
This time, the sender was Daniel Brooks.
The subject line was:
*THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR FATHER.*
I opened it.
There was one attachment.
A photograph of a handwritten confession.
At the bottom was my father's signature.
And beneath it, a sentence that made my blood run cold.
I knowingly authorized the transfer of my wife's inheritance to Daniel Brooks in exchange for keeping my son out of prison.
I looked at Dad.
He was staring at the same photograph.

Then he whispered:
“Marcus, I know exactly why they wrote that.””
