Chapter 6: My Mother's Last Secret

I sat down.

One point eight million dollars.

My mother had worked as a school administrator for thirty-two years. She and Dad had lived modestly, saved carefully, and rarely spent money on themselves.

But I'd never known they had that kind of wealth.

“Dad, where did that money come from?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Your mother inherited part of a commercial property from her aunt. Over the years, the property was sold and reinvested. She kept the accounts separate because she wanted you to have something when you started your own family.””

I stared at him.

“Why didn't I know?””

“Because she wanted to give it to you herself.””

He looked toward the photograph.

“Then she got sick.””

The room became painfully quiet.

Dad explained that during her final months, my mother had become increasingly worried about the estate.

She'd discovered irregular withdrawals from one of her investment accounts.

At first, she suspected a clerical error.

Then she noticed that someone had accessed the account using documents she'd never authorized.

“Did she know who was responsible?”” I asked.

Dad nodded.

“She suspected someone close to the family.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Vanessa.””

I stood.

“No. That doesn't make sense.””

“Your mother didn't accuse her directly. She wanted proof.””

I paced across the office.

“So my mother knew Vanessa before we met, knew something was wrong with the money, and never told me?””

“Your mother was trying to protect you.””

“From my own wife?””

Dad's eyes filled again.

“Son, she was afraid you would defend Vanessa and refuse to believe her.””

I stopped walking.

That hurt more than I expected.

Because he was right.

If my mother had told me something like this years ago, I might have dismissed it.

I had been in love.

I'd believed Vanessa was the person I would grow old with.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Rebecca.

I've reviewed the records. Please don't confront anyone else until we meet. I found a document that may explain why Vanessa approached your family.

I immediately called her.

She answered.

“Marcus, I need you to listen carefully.””

“What document?””

“My father kept a sealed file relating to your mother's estate. I found it in a storage unit yesterday.””

“What's inside?””

“An original beneficiary agreement, a list of suspicious transfers, and a letter addressed to your father.””

I looked at Dad.

“What does the letter say?””

Rebecca hesitated.

“It says that your mother believed someone had been preparing to gain control of the estate long before she became ill.””

Dad slowly stood.

“Who?””

“I can't be certain until I compare the signatures. But there is a name mentioned repeatedly.””

“What name?””

She lowered her voice.

“Daniel Brooks.””

I closed my eyes.

The man who had been standing in my office.

The man my wife had introduced as her attorney.

“Rebecca, how long has he been involved?””

“According to my father's records, at least four years.””

I glanced at the photograph of Vanessa and my mother.

Four years before my mother died.

Three years before I married Vanessa.

The timeline was becoming impossible to ignore.

After the call, Dad sat silently at the desk.

Then he reached into his wallet and pulled out a small photograph.

It showed my mother sitting on a hospital bed.

Beside her was a younger woman.

Vanessa.

On the back, my mother had written:

Thank you for coming. I hope Marcus never has to know what we discovered.

I looked at Dad.

“Did Mom leave anything else?””

He hesitated.

Then he stood and walked toward the old wooden cabinet in the corner.

He opened the bottom drawer and removed a small metal box.

I'd seen it before.

My mother used to keep jewelry in it.

Dad placed it on the desk.

“I haven't opened this since she died.””

Inside were several photographs, an old gold bracelet, and a sealed envelope.

My name was written across the front.

In my mother's handwriting.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

My darling Marcus,

If you're reading this, something has happened that your father and I hoped would never happen.

There is money that belongs to you. But there is also a person who believes that money should belong to them.

I tried to stop it while I was alive.

I need you to understand something. The person you trust most may have entered your life for reasons you cannot imagine.

I stopped reading.

Dad looked at me.

“Keep going, son.””

The next paragraph was shorter.

If Vanessa ever becomes part of your family, please don't let her near the blue folder.

I looked up.

“What blue folder?””

Dad shook his head.

“I don't know.””

I turned the letter over.

There was a final sentence.

The original proof is hidden where your father keeps the things he cannot bear to throw away.

Dad went completely still.

Then he slowly looked toward the garage.

“My old workbench,” he whispered.

“What?””

“Your mother used to hide things in a small compartment underneath it. I never knew why.””

We drove to Dad's house before sunset.

The garage smelled of motor oil, old wood, and dust.

Dad moved several boxes and pulled an old toolbox away from the wall.

Behind it was a narrow wooden compartment.

He pressed a loose panel.

It opened.

Inside was a blue folder.

My heart began pounding.

I pulled it out.

There were property deeds, bank records, and a handwritten list of names.

At the bottom was a photograph of Vanessa.

But this photograph was different.

She was standing beside a man outside a courthouse.

The date was printed in the corner.

Four years before I had met her.

And the man beside her was Daniel Brooks.

I turned the photograph over.

My mother's handwriting covered the back.

This is the man who helped Vanessa take the first $300,000.

I looked at Dad.

“Three hundred thousand dollars?””

He nodded slowly.

Then I found the last document in the folder.

It was a copy of a marriage certificate.

The groom's name was Daniel Brooks.

The bride's name was Vanessa Carter.

My wife had been married before.

But the date made my blood run cold.

The marriage had taken place just seven months before Vanessa and I met.

And the certificate listed something neither of them had ever told me.

*Daniel Brooks was still legally married to Vanessa when she married me.*
