Chapter 7: The Marriage They Never Ended
I read the marriage certificate three times.
Vanessa Carter.
Daniel Brooks.
The date was unmistakable.
Seven months before Vanessa and I met.
I looked at my father.
“Did Mom know about this?””
Dad nodded slowly.
“She found out shortly before she died. That's why she started investigating Vanessa.””
I held the certificate against the garage light.
“Then Vanessa committed bigamy?””
“Possibly. But we need to know whether she ever legally divorced him.””
I searched through the blue folder again.
Behind the marriage certificate was a photocopy of a divorce petition.
The names matched.
But the final page was missing.
“Dad, there's no divorce decree.””
He shook his head.
“Your mother must have been looking for it.””
I called Rebecca.
She answered immediately.
“Marcus, did you find the blue folder?””
“Yes. And I found something you need to see.””
I photographed the marriage certificate and sent it to her.
There was a long silence.
Finally, she spoke.
“Where did you get this?””
“My mother's private records.””
“Marcus, don't contact Vanessa about that certificate yet.””
“Why?””
“Because if it's genuine and no divorce was finalized, this could affect more than your marriage. It could affect the property transfers and every financial agreement she entered into afterward.””
I leaned against the workbench.
“Can you verify it?””
“I know someone who can access the original county records. Give me until tomorrow morning.””
I looked toward Dad.
He was sitting on an overturned bucket, staring at the floor.
“Rebecca, there's something else. My wife borrowed money against my father's property using his identity.””
“I saw the loan application. We're going to need the original documents.””
“I have copies.””
“Keep them safe. And Marcus?””
“Yes?””
“Check your credit reports. I suspect there are other accounts.””
The call ended.
I looked at Dad.
“We need to get you somewhere safe.””
He frowned.
“I'm not going anywhere.””
“Dad, they have your personal information.””
He slowly stood.
“Then I'll stay with you. I'm not going to spend another night hiding in my truck.””
I put my hand on his shoulder.
“You won't have to.””
That evening, we returned to my house.
Vanessa's car was gone.
The dining room had been cleaned, but the expensive plates were still arranged on the table.
A half-empty bottle of wine sat beside the centerpiece.
There was a note on the counter.
Marcus, I'm staying with my sister. Don't contact me until you've calmed down. We can discuss the house through Daniel.
I crumpled the note.
Dad looked around.
“Your mother would have hated seeing this.””
I glanced at him.
“Seeing what?””
“A home where people are afraid to tell the truth.””
I didn't have an answer.
After putting Lily to bed, I returned to my office and began checking my credit accounts.
The first report showed a personal loan I didn't recognize.
$68,000.
The second showed a business credit card.
$24,500.
The third was a mortgage inquiry involving a property in Savannah.
I called the lender.
After several verification questions, a representative confirmed that the accounts had been opened using my information.
One loan had already been transferred to collections.
“Who submitted the application?”” I asked.
“An authorized representative named Vanessa Hale.””
I closed my eyes.
“Was there another person listed?””
The representative checked.
“Yes. Daniel Brooks.””
I ended the call and sat motionless.
My wife and her former husband had apparently been using my identity to borrow money.
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
“What do you want?””
Her voice was unusually soft.
“Marcus, I know you're upset.””
“Where are you?””
“At my sister's.””
“Is Daniel there?””
Silence.
Then she sighed.
“Why does everything have to become an accusation?””
“Because I found your marriage certificate.””
Her breathing changed.
“What certificate?””
“Your marriage to Daniel.””
For several seconds, she said nothing.
Then she laughed.
“That's what your mother told you?””
“No. I found the document myself.””
Her voice became cold.
“Your mother was obsessed with me.””
“She knew you were married.””
“She didn't understand anything.””
“Did you ever divorce Daniel?””
Another silence.
Then she said something I will never forget.
“Marcus, you should be more concerned about why your mother was so desperate to keep you away from your inheritance.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“What did you do to her?””
Vanessa laughed quietly.
“Nothing your father doesn't already know.””
The call ended.
I immediately called Dad.
He answered from the guest bedroom.
“What's wrong, son?””
“Dad, did Mom know Vanessa was stealing the inheritance?””
He hesitated.
Then he said:
“Marcus, there's something I never told you about the night your mother died.””
I stood.
“What?””
“She didn't die believing Vanessa had won.””
“What does that mean?””
Dad's voice cracked.
“Your mother called me from the hospital that night. She said she'd found the original bank records. She said she knew exactly where the money had gone.””
I swallowed.
“Where?””
Dad whispered:
“She said she'd hidden the proof with someone Vanessa would never think to question.””
“Who?””
May you like
He took a shaky breath.
“Your daughter.””
