Chapter 10: The Uncle Who Was Never Dead

I read Rebecca's message again.

Then I looked at my father.

“Dad, you told me Uncle Peter died when I was twelve.””

Dad lowered the photograph.

“I know what I told you.””

“Then why is he alive?””

He rubbed both hands over his face.

“Because your mother asked me to tell you he was dead.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

Dad walked to the kitchen window.

“Peter was involved in some terrible things before your mother became sick. He had a gambling problem. He borrowed money from people he couldn't repay. Eventually, he started asking your mother for money.””

“How much?””

“More than $200,000.””

I shook my head.

“And you both just pretended he died?””

“Your mother wanted to protect you. She didn't want you growing up knowing your uncle was involved with dangerous people.””

I looked at the photograph again.

“But he was at the hospital when Mom was dying.””

Dad nodded.

“He came back shortly before she passed.””

“Why didn't I see him?””

“Because your mother specifically asked him to stay away from you.””

I felt another wave of anger.

“Everyone seems to have been keeping secrets from me.””

Dad turned around.

“Marcus, I know you're angry. But your mother was trying to protect you from something she couldn't explain.””

My phone rang.

Rebecca.

I answered.

“Why did Peter call you?””

Her voice sounded strained.

“He said he has the original will and a document proving that your mother changed the inheritance arrangements shortly before her death.””

“Why didn't he give it to you?””

“Because he wants something in exchange.””

I closed my eyes.

“Money?””

“Not exactly. He wants immunity from any investigation into the missing funds.””

I almost laughed.

“So he knows he's involved.””

“He admitted that he received payments from Brooks Family Holdings.””

Dad grabbed the edge of the counter.

“Ask her how much.””

I repeated the question.

Rebecca answered.

“Approximately $75,000 over eighteen months.””

I looked at Dad.

He slowly shook his head.

Rebecca continued.

“There's another issue. Peter claims he never received the full amount promised to him. He says Daniel kept most of the money.””

“And Vanessa?””

“According to Peter, she was the person who introduced Daniel to your mother's estate.””

My stomach tightened.

“Can you arrange a meeting?””

“I can. But not at my office. Peter refuses to meet there.””

“Where?””

“An old restaurant near Peachtree Street. He wants to meet tonight.””

I looked at the clock.

It was nearly seven.

“Fine.””

“Marcus, bring someone you trust. And don't give him any original documents.””

I ended the call.

Dad stood.

“I'm coming with you.””

“No, Dad.””

“Peter is my wife's brother. If he's involved, I deserve to look him in the eye.””

I hesitated.

Then I nodded.

We left Lily with a trusted neighbor and drove downtown.

The restaurant was nearly empty.

A few people sat near the windows, eating dinner beneath warm pendant lights.

An older man sat alone in a booth at the back.

His hair was almost completely white.

He wore a dark green jacket and held a glass of water.

Dad stopped walking.

“Peter.””

The man looked up.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Peter stood.

“Robert.””

Dad approached him slowly.

“You're supposed to be dead.””

Peter gave a tired smile.

“I know.””

Dad slapped the table.

“Do you have any idea what you've done to this family?””

Peter lowered his eyes.

“I made mistakes.””

“You stole from your sister?””

“I didn't steal everything.””

That answer made my blood boil.

I pulled out a chair.

“Let's skip the family reunion. Where is the original will?””

Peter looked at me.

“Marcus. You look just like your mother.””

“Don't.””

He nodded.

“Fair enough.””

He removed a thick envelope from his jacket.

“This is the original document.””

I didn't touch it.

“Why should I believe you?””

“Because Rebecca has a copy of the amendment. This is the original.””

He placed it on the table.

Dad opened it.

The first page contained my mother's name and the date of the amendment.

The second page listed the beneficiaries.

I read carefully.

The remaining trust assets were to be divided into two protected accounts.

One for me.

One for Lily.

But there was a condition.

The accounts could not be accessed by either beneficiary until an independent investigation into the missing $300,000 was completed.

I looked at Peter.

“Why?””

“Your mother suspected someone would try to steal the inheritance again.””

“Who?””

Peter stared into his water.

“Daniel.””

I leaned forward.

“Why did you help him?””

Peter's jaw tightened.

“Because I owed money. He offered to settle my debts if I helped him access the estate records.””

“And Vanessa?””

“She was his wife. They were already working together when I met them.””

I felt sick.

“Then why did Vanessa marry me?””

Peter looked directly at me.

“Because your mother changed the trust.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“Daniel discovered that the original inheritance arrangement had been altered. Your mother had placed the money beyond his immediate reach. Vanessa believed marrying you would give her access to the family assets.””

Dad slammed his hand onto the table.

“You're telling me this was planned?””

Peter nodded.

“From the beginning.””

I stared at the man who was supposed to be my uncle.

“And what do you want?””

He pushed another document toward me.

“A signed statement confirming that I cooperated voluntarily.””

“That's it?””

“And protection from prosecution.””

I shook my head.

“You're asking me to protect the man who helped steal from my mother?””

Peter leaned closer.

“Marcus, there's something you need to know. Daniel isn't finished. He's already moved the remaining money.””

“Where?””

Peter looked toward the restaurant entrance.

Then he whispered:

“Into an account registered under Lily's name.””
