Chapter 10: The Person Pulling the Strings
I didn’t sleep.
Not because I was afraid of the person who sent the message.
Because I was afraid of what would happen if I looked away for even a second.
Sophia slept upstairs, unaware that someone had taken a picture of her through our window.
My daughter had already spent years believing she wasn’t wanted.
I refused to let someone make her feel unsafe too.
I sat in the living room until sunrise.
Vanessa never left her chair.
For the first time since I met her, she looked small.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Just broken.
But I couldn’t forget what she had done.
“You knew someone was threatening Laura.””
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.””
“And you stayed silent.””
“I was scared.””
I shook my head.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“Fear doesn’t explain everything.””
She looked at me.
“I thought if I disappeared, he would destroy me.””
“Who?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Richard.””
My jaw tightened.
“Richard?””
She nodded.
“He wasn’t working alone.””
The room went silent.
“Who else?””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
Then back at me.
“I don’t know.””
I stood.
“No more secrets.””
She closed her eyes.
“Michael…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You don’t get to protect me by hiding the truth anymore.””
A tear rolled down her face.
“I met Richard before I met you.””
“I know.””
“But I didn’t know how far he would go.””
“Then why did you marry me?””
She looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something different.
Shame.
“I thought I could fix everything.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You married me because you thought my money could fix your problems.””
She didn’t deny it.
That hurt more than any argument.
Later that morning, David arrived with security footage from the neighborhood.
“We found the person who took the photo.””
My heart jumped.
“Who?””
He placed a tablet on the table.
A video played.
A man standing outside our house.
Wearing a dark jacket.
Watching.
Waiting.
Then he turned toward the camera.
My blood ran cold.
I knew him.
Not personally.
But I had seen him before.
At my company.
At charity events.
Around Vanessa.
“Who is he?””
David looked at his notes.
“His name is Thomas Reed.””
Vanessa immediately stood.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
“You know him?””
She looked terrified.
“He worked with Richard.””
I stared.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
She covered her face.
“Because I thought it was over.””
David paused the video.
“Michael, there’s more.””
He zoomed in.
The man wasn’t just standing outside.
He left something near the mailbox.
A small envelope.
I walked outside with David and a police officer.
The envelope was still there.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Only five words.
*You should have listened to Vanessa.*
I stared at the message.
Then looked back at the house.
Vanessa.
The woman I thought betrayed me.
The woman I thought was the enemy.
Suddenly, I wasn’t sure anymore.
Because someone else had been controlling everything.
That night, Vanessa finally told me the one thing she had hidden for years.
“I was there when Laura discovered the truth.””
I looked at her.
“Where?””
“At Richard’s office.””
“What happened?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Laura found documents showing Richard had been stealing from clients.””
“And you?””
“I helped him collect information.””
The honesty was painful.
“But Laura wanted to report him.””
“Yes.””
“Then why didn’t she?””
Vanessa looked away.
“Because she wanted to give me a chance.””
I froze.
“She knew?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She knew I was involved.””
My voice lowered.
“Why would she help you?””
A tear fell.
“Because she said Sophia deserved better than two adults making selfish choices.””
I closed my eyes.
That sounded exactly like Laura.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“Richard found out Laura was going to the police.””
My heart raced.
“And?””
“He told me he would handle it.””
The room became silent.
“Handle it how?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
But her expression said she did.
Then my phone rang.
A detective.
I answered.
“Mr. Carter?””
“Yes.””
“We need you to come down here.””
“Why?””
The detective paused.
“Because we found something connected to your wife’s accident.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“What?””
His voice became quieter.
“A vehicle registration.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Whose vehicle?””
May you like
The detective answered:
“Richard Hale’s.””
