Chapter 8: The Witness Who Disappeared
I drove straight to David’s office.
I don’t remember the drive.
I only remember the sound of my own heartbeat.
Every traffic light felt too slow.
Every second felt like another piece of my life was falling apart.
When I arrived, David was standing beside his desk with a stack of papers.
“I found it.””
He handed me a copy.
The report was old.
The ink had faded.
But one sentence was clear.
*Witness observed a woman standing near the vehicle approximately twenty minutes before the collision.*
I looked at David.
“Who was the witness?””
He hesitated.
“That’s the strange part.””
“What?””
“The name was removed.””
I stared at him.
“Removed?””
“Yes.””
“By who?””
David shook his head.
“We don’t know yet.””
I looked back at the report.
“A woman near Laura’s car.””
My hands trembled.
“Was it Vanessa?””
David didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
That evening, I confronted Vanessa again.
She was sitting in the living room.
When she saw my face, she already knew.
“What did you find?””
I threw the report onto the table.
“What happened the night Laura died?””
Her expression changed.
“Michael…”
“Answer me.””
She stood slowly.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She walked toward the window.
“I met Laura once.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
“When?””
“Before I met you.””
“Why?””
Silence.
Then:
“She came to see me.””
My heart stopped.
“Why would Laura come to see you?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Because she knew.””
“Knew what?””
She turned.
“She knew I was interested in your finances.””
The confession was quiet.
But devastating.
“You admitted it.””
“I never planned for anything to happen.””
I stared at her.
“Then why was she near your car?””
Her face went pale.
“You think I killed her?””
“I don’t know what to think anymore.””
She started crying.
Real tears.
Maybe.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“She threatened to expose me.””
I shook my head.
“So you had a reason to want her gone.””
“No!””
Her voice cracked.
“I was stupid. I made mistakes. But I didn’t kill Laura.””
I wanted to believe her.
I wanted there to be another explanation.
Then Sophia walked into the room.
She had heard everything.
“Daddy?””
I immediately turned.
“Sophia, go upstairs.””
But she didn’t move.
“Was Mom bad?””
My heart broke.
“No child should have to ask that.””
She looked at Vanessa.
“Did you hurt my mommy?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“No.””
But Sophia stepped back.
She didn’t believe her.
That night, I stayed awake beside Sophia’s bedroom door.
Around midnight, I heard something.
A quiet sound downstairs.
I walked toward it.
The kitchen light was on.
Vanessa was there.
Holding a small box.
When she saw me, she froze.
“What is that?””
She didn’t answer.
I walked closer.
Inside the box were letters.
Old photographs.
And one envelope with my name written on it.
My hands went cold.
“Where did you get this?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Laura left it.””
I stared at her.
“Why do you have something from my dead wife?””
She looked terrified.
“Because she gave it to me.””
“That makes no sense.””
Vanessa opened the envelope.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Only one sentence.
I read it.
And my entire world stopped.
*If anything happens to me, Michael needs to know Vanessa was never alone.*
I looked at Vanessa.
“What does that mean?””
She started crying.
“I was going to tell you.””
“When?””
She couldn’t answer.
Then the doorbell rang.
At midnight.
Nobody should have been there.
I walked to the front door.
And when I opened it…
A woman stood outside.
An older woman.
Holding a photograph.
She looked at me and whispered:
“You’re Laura’s husband, aren’t you?””
“Yes.””
Her hands shook.
“I’m the person who saw what happened that night.””
I stared.
“Who are you?””
She looked past me.
Toward Vanessa.

Then said:
“And I know who Vanessa was protecting.””
