Chapter 7: The Secret She Buried

I didn’t sleep after Richard’s phone call.

Not because I believed him.

Because I was terrified that part of me already did.

For years, I had accepted the story of how my first wife, Laura, died.

A rainy highway.

A sudden accident.

A phone call from the hospital that changed my life forever.

Sophia was only two years old.

I remembered holding her tiny hand at the funeral and promising her I would always protect her.

But I never questioned the details.

I trusted the people around me.

I trusted Vanessa.

And that was the part that hurt the most.

The next morning, I met Richard Hale at a small coffee shop downtown.

I arrived twenty minutes early.

Not because I wanted to.

Because I needed time to prepare myself.

When Richard walked in, I recognized him immediately from the photograph.

He looked older now.

More tired.

But it was definitely him.

He sat across from me.

“You shouldn’t have come alone.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He looked around.

“It means Vanessa is more dangerous than you realize.””

I almost stood up.

“Be careful with your words.””

Richard nodded slowly.

“I understand why you don’t want to believe me.””

“Then explain.””

He placed a folder on the table.

“I worked with Vanessa before she met you.””

I stared at him.

“What kind of work?””

“Financial planning.””

“And?””

“And finding opportunities.””

I hated the way he said that.

“What opportunities?””

Richard looked directly at me.

“People with money.””

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

“You’re saying she targeted me?””

“I’m saying she knew who you were before you knew who she was.””

I opened the folder.

Inside were copies of old records.

My name.

My company.

My assets.

And Vanessa’s signature.

My hands went still.

“This is impossible.””

Richard shook his head.

“It’s not.””

I looked up.

“When did she get this information?””

“Before your first date.””

The room felt like it tilted.

Before our first date.

Before she knew me.

Before she said she loved me.

I closed the folder.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

Richard looked down.

“Because I helped her.””

The honesty surprised me.

“What?””

“I introduced her to people who could give her information.””

“Why?””

His expression changed.

“Because I thought it was just business.””

“And now?””

“Now I know she destroyed a family.””

I wanted to hate him.

But I saw something in his eyes.

Regret.

“Tell me about Laura.””

Richard was silent for a moment.

Then he said:

“Your wife asked questions about her.””

My heart stopped.

“What kind of questions?””

“About the accident.””

I leaned forward.

“Why?””

“Because Laura had something Vanessa wanted.””

“What?””

Richard looked at me.

“Proof.””

I stared at him.

“Proof of what?””

Before he could answer, his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

He stood suddenly.

“We have to leave.””

I grabbed his arm.

“What is it?””

He showed me the screen.

A message.

From Vanessa.

*Stop talking. You promised.*

My blood ran cold.

“How did she know we were here?””

Richard looked toward the window.

“She always knows more than she should.””

That evening, I returned home.

Vanessa was waiting.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Calm.

Too calm.

“You met Richard.””

I froze.

“How do you know?””

She smiled sadly.

“Because I know him.””

I stepped closer.

“You knew he would call me?””

“No.””

“Then why aren’t you surprised?””

She didn’t answer.

I placed the folder on the table.

Her face changed when she saw it.

Just for a second.

But enough.

“What is this?””

“You tell me.””

She looked at the documents.

Then sighed.

“Michael…”

“No.””

I pointed at the papers.

“I want the truth.””

She sat down.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

“Your first wife wasn’t who you thought she was.””

I felt anger rise.

“Don’t.””

“She was hiding things.””

“Laura is dead.””

“Yes.””

“And you’re using her memory to protect yourself.””

Vanessa looked away.

Then she whispered:

“She found out about me.””

The room went silent.

“What did you say?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Before we met… Laura knew my name.””

My heart pounded.

“How?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Then stopped.

Because my phone rang.

It was David.

I answered.

“Michael.””

His voice sounded urgent.

“We found the original police report from Laura’s accident.””

I held my breath.

“What about it?””

A pause.

Then:

“There’s a witness statement that was removed from the official file.””

My grip tightened.

“Whose statement?””

May you like

David answered:

“Someone who saw Vanessa near Laura’s car that night.””
