Chapter 6: The Stranger in the Photograph

I stared at the picture for almost a full minute.

The room was silent.

Nobody moved.

The man beside Vanessa looked to be in his forties.

He was smiling.

Comfortable.

Like he belonged there.

Like he had been part of our lives without me knowing.

I turned the photo over.

The handwriting on the back was unmistakable.

*The plan starts tomorrow.*

“Vanessa,” I said.

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

She didn’t answer.

“Who is this man?””

Her eyes moved toward the photo.

Then away.

“I don’t know.””

My mother immediately shook her head.

“That’s a lie.””

Everyone looked at her.

My mother rarely raised her voice.

But now she looked furious.

“I saw him before.””

Vanessa’s face changed.

“When?””

My mother stepped forward.

“Six months ago.””

My heart dropped.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“I came to your house early one morning. Vanessa told me she had a meeting.””

“With who?””

My mother pointed at the photograph.

“Him.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You’re remembering wrong.””

“No,” my mother said.

“I’m not.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You met him behind my back?””

“It was nothing.””

“Then why hide it?””

She didn’t answer.

That was becoming her pattern.

Silence.

Excuses.

Half-truths.

David picked up the photograph.

“Michael, this changes things.””

“What do you mean?””

“If Vanessa was working with someone else, we need to know what their goal was.””

I looked at Sophia.

She was sitting quietly on the couch.

Listening.

I hated that she had to hear any of this.

I walked over and sat beside her.

“Sweetheart, why did you find this?””

She looked nervous.

“Because I was looking for my old drawing.””

“What drawing?””

“The one I made for Mom.””

My heart tightened.

“What happened?””

She hugged her rabbit.

“I wanted to put it in her room because I thought maybe she would like me again.””

Nobody spoke.

Then she whispered:

“But I saw the envelope.””

Vanessa looked away.

Sophia continued.

“Daddy…”

“Yes?””

“Did Mom really never love me?””

I felt tears burn my eyes.

I held her hand.

“I don’t know what was in your mother’s heart.””

I paused.

“But I know what is in mine.””

She looked at me.

“And I love you more than anything.””

That night, David discovered something else.

The man in the picture had a name.

“Richard Hale,” he said.

I stared.

“Who is he?””

David looked at his notes.

“Former financial consultant.””

“Former?””

“He lost his license after several complaints.””

My stomach sank.

“What kind of complaints?””

David hesitated.

“Helping people move assets secretly.””

I looked toward the window.

Vanessa wasn’t just hiding a friendship.

She was hiding a partnership.

The next morning, I received an unknown call.

I almost ignored it.

But something made me answer.

“Hello?””

A man’s voice came through.

“Michael Carter?””

“Yes.””

“You don’t know me.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?””

“My name is Richard Hale.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“Why are you calling me?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Because Vanessa is not telling you the truth.””

I stood up.

“What truth?””

His voice lowered.

“The truth about why she married you.””

My heart started racing.

“What are you talking about?””

Another pause.

Then Richard said something that changed everything.

“Your wife didn’t choose you because she loved you.””

I looked toward the hallway where Sophia’s bedroom was.

“Why did she choose me?””

Richard answered:

“Because of what happened to your first wife.””

My blood ran cold.

My first wife.

Sophia’s mother.

A woman who had died years ago.

And then Richard said:

“Michael, Vanessa knows something about her death that you never found out.””

The line went silent.

And for the first time, I wondered if the birthday photo wasn’t the beginning of the nightmare.

Maybe it was the moment someone finally exposed it.
