Chapter 11: The Evidence She Hid
The police station smelled like old paper and coffee.
I sat across from Detective Harris while he placed a file on the table.
For years, I thought Laura’s death was a tragedy.
A terrible accident.
Something random.
Now I was sitting in a police station learning that someone might have been responsible.
“Why wasn’t this found before?”” I asked.
Detective Harris looked uncomfortable.
“Because the investigation was closed quickly.””
“Why?””
He opened the file.
“Several details were overlooked.””
I stared at him.
“Overlooked?””
He nodded.
“The original witness statement disappeared.””
My hands tightened.
“And now?””
“Now we found a copy.””
He pushed the document toward me.
Margaret’s name was there.
Her statement.
Her description.
And one sentence that made my breathing stop.
*The vehicle following Laura’s car matched the description of a black sedan registered to Richard Hale.*
I looked up.
“Why wasn’t he questioned?””
Detective Harris sighed.
“That’s what we’re trying to understand.””
I left the station with one thought.
Someone had buried the truth.
And someone had helped them.
When I returned home, Vanessa was waiting.
“You found out.””
I stared.
“You knew they would find Richard’s car.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Her voice cracked.
“Because I was afraid you would hate me.””
I almost laughed.
“Hate you?””
I stepped closer.
“Vanessa, my daughter thought she wasn’t part of this family because of you.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I pointed upstairs.
“She believed she was temporary.””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
“I know.””
“And you still kept secrets.””
“I was trying to protect her.””
“By letting her suffer?””
She had no answer.
That was the worst part.
Later that evening, Sophia came into the room.
“Daddy?””
I turned.
“What is it?””
She held a small box.
“I found this under Mom’s bed.””
Vanessa froze.
“What?””
Sophia handed it to me.
Inside was a key.
An old one.
Attached was a note.
*Locker 214. You’ll find the truth.*
I looked at Vanessa.
“What is this?””
She shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
But her face said she did.
The next morning, David and I went to the storage facility.
Locker 214 was at the very end of the hallway.
Rust covered the metal door.
I inserted the key.
It opened.
Inside were boxes.
Old files.
Photographs.
And a small voice recorder.
I picked it up.
“Is this Laura’s?””
David nodded.
“Maybe.””
My hands shook as I pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Laura’s voice.
My heart stopped.
“Michael…”
I almost dropped the recorder.
Her voice.
After all these years.
A recording.
A message.
“Michael, if you’re hearing this, something happened.””
I closed my eyes.
David looked away.
Laura continued.
“I need you to know that I trusted the wrong people.””
A pause.
Then:
“Vanessa is involved, but she isn’t the person you should fear.””
I looked at David.
The recording continued.
“Richard has been using her.””
My breathing slowed.
“He knows Vanessa’s weaknesses. He knows how to make people believe they have no choice.””
Then Laura’s voice became softer.
“Michael, please protect Sophia.””
A sound came in the background.
A door opening.
Laura suddenly whispered:
“He’s here.””
The recording ended.
I stood frozen.
“She knew.””
David nodded.
“She knew someone was coming.””
Then I noticed something else inside the locker.
A second envelope.
My name was written on it.
But this time, the handwriting wasn’t Laura’s.
It was Vanessa’s.
I opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
A picture of Vanessa.
Richard.
And another person.
Someone I recognized immediately.
My heart sank.
May you like
Because the third person in the photograph was someone I trusted.
Someone who had been helping my family for years.
