Chapter 12: The Friend Who Betrayed Us
I stared at the photograph.
I couldn’t speak.
David looked over my shoulder.
“Who is that?””
I swallowed.
“James.””
David frowned.
“James who?””
“My business partner.””
The man who had helped me build my company.
The man who had stood beside me during my father’s funeral.
The man I trusted with my finances.
He was standing beside Richard.
And Vanessa.
I turned the photograph over.
There was a date.
Three months before Laura died.
My hands went numb.
“Michael,” David said carefully, “are you sure?””
“Yes.””
I knew that face.
I had known him for fifteen years.
When I got home, James was already there.
Vanessa had called him.
I don’t know why.
Maybe she thought he could help.
Maybe she thought he could explain.
But when he saw the photograph in my hand, his face changed.
That was all I needed.
“You knew.””
James looked away.
“Michael…”
“You knew about Richard.””
He sighed.
“I can explain.””
“No.””
I placed the photo on the table.
“Explain why you were meeting with the man connected to my wife’s death.””
James sat down.
“I never wanted anyone hurt.””
The same words.
Again.
Everyone involved kept saying they never wanted anyone hurt.
But someone was dead.
And my daughter had been emotionally destroyed.
“What did you do?””
James looked at Vanessa.
She was crying.
“I helped Richard access information.””
My stomach turned.
“My information?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
He looked ashamed.
“Money.””
The answer was simple.
Ugly.
Honest.
“How long?””
“Years.””
I stared at him.
“How did Laura find out?””
James looked down.
“She found the records.””
“And?””
“She confronted Richard.””
I felt anger rising.
“Then why did she die?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Because Richard panicked.””
I turned toward her.
“What happened?””
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“He called me that night.””
“What did he say?””
She closed her eyes.
“He said Laura knew too much.””
Silence.
“And you?””
“I went to stop him.””
I stared.
“You went there?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because when I arrived, it was already too late.””
My voice lowered.
“What did you see?””
Vanessa looked terrified.
“Richard standing beside Laura’s car.””
The room went silent.
Then James suddenly stood.
“This is over.””
Everyone looked at him.
“What?””
He grabbed his jacket.
“I’m leaving.””
I stepped in front of him.
“No.””
“You can’t keep me here.””
“I’m not.””
I pointed toward the door.
“But the police can.””
His face changed.
For the first time, James looked afraid.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And his fear became panic.
I saw the name.
Richard.
James answered.
“What?””
A pause.
Then his face turned pale.
“He knows.””
I moved closer.
“Who knows?””
James looked at me.
And whispered:
“Richard knows we found the evidence.””
Before anyone could react, James dropped the phone.
A message had appeared.
One sentence.
*Take care of Michael, or Sophia will be next.*
My entire body went cold.
Because I finally understood.
This was never about money.
Never about a photograph.
Never even about Vanessa.
Someone had spent years building a plan.
And now that plan was collapsing.
May you like
But the person behind it was still watching.
And he had just threatened my daughter.
