Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Camera

I stared at the screen.

For a moment, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

The words blurred together.

Vanessa stood beside me, suddenly silent.

“Michael,” she said quickly.

“It’s not what you think.””

I looked at Emily.

“What exactly did she ask you to do?””

Emily hesitated.

“I was hired to photograph the party. But this morning, Vanessa sent me a message.””

She looked uncomfortable.

“She asked me to make sure I didn’t include Sophia in certain pictures.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why?””

Emily looked down.

“She said Sophia wasn’t part of the family portrait she wanted.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s not true.””

I turned toward her.

“You just heard the message.””

“She misunderstood.””

Emily immediately responded.

“No, I didn’t.””

Everyone was watching now.

Vanessa’s carefully created smile was gone.

I had known my wife for eleven years.

I knew every expression on her face.

And right now, she looked scared.

“Michael,” she whispered, “can we talk privately?””

I looked at Sophia.

She was standing beside my mother, holding her stuffed rabbit.

The same rabbit she carried everywhere when she was nervous.

“No.””

Vanessa frowned.

“You’re going to do this here?””

“Yes.””

I pointed toward my daughter.

“Because she heard everything here.””

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“You’re making our daughter look bad.””

Those words hit me harder than anything else.

“Our daughter?””

She immediately realized what she had said.

I stepped closer.

“Which daughter?””

Vanessa looked away.

That tiny movement told me more than any confession could.

My mother walked over and placed a hand on Sophia’s shoulder.

“Come here, sweetheart.””

Sophia hugged her grandmother tightly.

I wanted to comfort her.

I wanted to erase the last ten minutes from her memory.

But I needed answers.

“Vanessa,” I said, “why would you do this?””

She crossed her arms again.

“Because I wanted one picture.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“One picture doesn’t require paying someone extra to remove a child.””

Her face hardened.

“You always choose her.””

The sentence came out quietly.

But everyone heard it.

I stared at my wife.

“She’s my daughter.””

“And Ethan is your son.””

“Yes.””

“Then why does she always come first?””

I felt a chill.

There it was.

The truth hiding underneath everything.

This was never about a picture.

It was about Sophia.

“Vanessa,” I said slowly, “what have you been telling my daughter when I’m not around?””

Her eyes narrowed.

“Nothing.””

But Sophia suddenly spoke.

“Daddy…”

Everyone turned.

She was still holding the rabbit.

“What?””

She looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“She told me not to call this house my home.””

My entire body went still.

“What?””

Vanessa’s face turned pale.

“Sophia, stop.””

But my daughter continued.

“She said Ethan needs a real family. She said you only keep me because you feel sorry for me.””

The party guests gasped.

I looked at Vanessa.

The woman I had married.

The woman I trusted.

“You said that to her?””

Vanessa’s voice became defensive.

“She’s sensitive. She misunderstood.””

“No nine-year-old misunderstands someone saying they don’t belong.””

My hands curled into fists.

Then Ethan suddenly stepped forward.

“But Mommy said Sophia was leaving anyway.””

Everyone froze.

Vanessa turned sharply.

“Ethan.””

The little boy looked confused.

“What? You said after Daddy changed his mind, we could have the house to ourselves.””

A cold silence fell over the backyard.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What did you just teach our son?””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

Then my phone rang.

I almost ignored it.

But when I saw the name on the screen, my blood ran cold.

It was my attorney.

I answered.

“Michael Carter?””

“Yes.””

“There’s something you need to know.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“What?””

The attorney paused.

“Someone recently contacted me asking about changing your family trust.””

My heart sank.

“Who contacted you?””

Another silence.

Then he said the name.

“Your wife, Vanessa.””

I slowly lowered the phone.

Because suddenly, the birthday party was no longer about a photograph.

May you like

It was about something much bigger.

And Vanessa had been planning it long before today.
