Chapter 5: The Woman Behind the Smile

The following week felt like living inside someone else’s nightmare.

The woman who used to pack my lunch before work.

The woman who held my hand during my father’s funeral.

The woman who cried when Sophia took her first steps into kindergarten.

That woman suddenly felt like a stranger.

Vanessa moved into the guest room while we figured out what happened next.

But every morning, I noticed something.

She wasn’t apologizing.

She was calculating.

One afternoon, I came home early and heard her talking on the phone.

I stopped before entering the living room.

“I told you I can fix this,” Vanessa said.

A pause.

“No, Michael doesn’t know everything.””

My heart started pounding.

I quietly stepped closer.

“I just need time.””

Another pause.

Then she said:

“Ethan deserves what should have been his.””

I pushed the door open.

Vanessa immediately turned.

The color disappeared from her face.

“Who were you talking to?””

She ended the call.

“Nobody.””

“Don’t lie to me.””

She stood.

“You’re spying on me now?””

“No. I walked into my own house.””

She grabbed her phone.

“You don’t trust me anymore.””

I stared at her.

“Should I?””

That hurt her.

But not enough.

She looked angry.

“You’re making me the villain.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You did that yourself.””

She stepped closer.

“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You sacrificed?””

“Yes.””

She pointed upstairs.

“I raised Sophia.””

“You resented her.””

“That’s not true.””

“Then why did she think she didn’t belong?””

Vanessa looked away.

Silence answered for her.

That evening, Sophia asked me a question while we were making pancakes.

“Daddy?””

“Yeah?””

“Am I going to have to leave?””

The spatula slipped from my hand.

“What?””

She looked down.

“Because Mom said families change.””

I knelt beside her.

“Sophia, listen to me.””

She looked at me.

“You are my family.””

“But Ethan is your real son.””

I felt my heart break.

“Sophia.””

She wiped her eyes.

“Mom said I was temporary.””

I closed my eyes.

That one word hurt more than anything else.

Temporary.

No child should ever feel temporary.

I hugged her.

“You are not temporary.””

She held onto me tightly.

“You promise?””

“I promise.””

The next day, I met with David again.

He brought more information.

“Michael, we traced the messages.””

“What messages?””

“The ones Vanessa sent.””

My hands tightened.

“To who?””

He placed printed records on the table.

Not emails.

Not documents.

Messages.

Between Vanessa and someone saved as “R.””

I read the first one.

*She’s still suspicious. I need more time.*

The second.

*Once Sophia is out of the picture, everything becomes easier.*

My blood ran cold.

“Who is R?””

David looked serious.

“We’re still investigating.””

I looked at the messages again.

There was one more.

The newest one.

Sent two days before Sophia’s birthday.

I read it slowly.

*The child is the only thing standing between Ethan and everything.*

I couldn’t breathe.

That night, I confronted Vanessa.

I placed the phone records on the table.

She looked at them.

Then at me.

“You went through my private messages?””

“Who is R?””

Her face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“Michael…”

“Who is R?””

She didn’t answer.

Then the front door opened.

Sophia walked in from the hallway.

Behind her was my mother.

And Sophia was holding something in her hand.

A small envelope.

“Daddy,” she whispered.

“I found this in Mom’s closet.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“Sophia, give that to me.””

My daughter stepped back.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“There’s a picture inside.””

I opened the envelope.

And when I pulled out the photograph, my entire body went cold.

Because standing beside Vanessa in the picture was a man I had never seen before.

May you like

And written on the back were four words:

*The plan starts tomorrow.*
