Chapter 13: The Final Trap
The police arrived within twenty minutes.
James sat at the kitchen table, silent and pale.
For the first time in fifteen years, I didn’t see my friend.
I saw someone who had helped destroy my family.
Detective Harris took the phone with the threatening message.
“This is enough to move forward,” he said.
I looked at him.
“Forward?””
He nodded.
“We need Richard.””
Everyone in the room knew that.
Richard was the center of everything.
The money.
The secrets.
Laura’s death.
Sophia’s fear.
But catching someone like Richard meant being patient.
And I was running out of patience.
That night, Sophia slept at my mother’s house.
I hated sending her away.
But I needed her somewhere safe.
Before she left, she hugged me tightly.
“Daddy?””
“Yeah?””
“Are you going to leave me?””
My heart broke.
“No.””
She looked into my eyes.
“Even if Mom doesn’t want me?””
I held her face gently.
“Your mother’s choices do not decide your worth.””
A small tear rolled down her cheek.
“I just wanted a picture.””
I closed my eyes.
That sentence stayed with me.
All of this.
Everything.
Started because my little girl wanted to stand beside her family.
The next morning, Detective Harris called.
“We found Richard.””
I stood immediately.
“Where?””
“An office building downtown.””
“Is he arrested?””
“Not yet.””
“Why?””
The detective paused.
“Because he wants to talk.””
I drove there with David.
Vanessa came too.
I almost told her no.
But then I remembered Laura’s recording.
Vanessa was guilty of hiding the truth.
But Richard was the person who controlled the lies.
When we entered the building, Richard was waiting.
He looked calm.
Almost relaxed.
“You finally figured it out.””
I stared at him.
“You threatened my daughter.””
He smiled slightly.
“I warned you.””
My hands tightened.
“You destroyed my family.””
Richard leaned back.
“No, Michael.””
He smiled.
“You had a family that was already falling apart.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Stop.””
Richard looked at her.
“Still protecting him?””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Protecting me from what?””
Richard laughed.
“She never told you?””
The room became silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What?””
Richard stood.
“Ask her about the night Laura died.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I told him.””
“No.””
Richard shook his head.
“You told him enough to make yourself look like a victim.””
My heart sank.
“Vanessa?””
She looked down.
Richard continued.
“She was there.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He smiled.
“She was in the car.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“What?””
She started crying.
“Michael…”
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
The word felt like a punch.
“Why?””
“I went to stop Richard.””
“Then why did you lie?””
“Because I was afraid.””
Richard laughed.
“She was afraid because she knew what she helped create.””
I turned toward him.
“What are you talking about?””
Richard walked closer.
“Your wife collected information. Your business partner moved money. I organized everything.””
He smiled.
“But Laura found out.””
“And you killed her.””
His smile faded.
“I didn’t mean for it to happen.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone had that excuse.
“I followed her.””
Richard’s voice became colder.
“She panicked. She drove too fast.””
I stared.
“You chased her.””
“Yes.””
The confession hung in the room.
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Richard Hale, you are under arrest.””
Richard suddenly smiled.
But not at the detective.
At Vanessa.
“You should have told him everything.””
Then he looked at me.
“Ask your wife what was inside Laura’s last envelope.””
My blood froze.
“What envelope?””
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Richard smiled.
“There it is.””
The police took him away.
But his final words stayed behind.

Because I knew.
There was still one secret Vanessa had never told me.
