Chapter 8: The House Sarah Left Behind
I didn't sleep that night.
At 7:15 the following morning, Daniel and I were sitting in his office, reviewing the property records.
The lakefront house had been purchased by Sarah seven years earlier.
It was a modest three-bedroom home near Lake Lanier, surrounded by pine trees and a narrow wooden deck overlooking the water.
Sarah had loved that place.
She used to take Lily there every summer.
After her diagnosis, she told me she wanted the house to remain in our daughter's name.
I had promised.
Now the county records showed a pending sale.
Daniel enlarged the document on his computer.
"The property is still legally registered to the trust," he explained.
"But someone filed a transfer authorization using your name.""
"Another forged signature?""
"Yes.""
"When was it submitted?""
"Eleven days ago.""
I rubbed my face.
"How much is the sale?""
"Eight hundred and fifty thousand dollars.""
I stared at the screen.
"Who is buying it?""
Daniel clicked another document.
Then he stopped.
"Marcus, you're not going to like this.""
"Who?""
"The purchasing company is registered to an individual named Jonathan Pierce.""
I searched my memory.
The name meant nothing.
Daniel opened the company records.
"He's a business associate of Richard Coleman.""
I leaned back.
"So Richard was planning to steal the house too.""
"Apparently.""
I stared at the photograph attached to the property listing.
The wooden deck was still there.
So was the little white swing Sarah had installed for Lily.
I remembered Sarah sitting beside me one summer evening, watching our daughter chase fireflies across the grass.
"Promise me she'll always have somewhere to come back to," she had said.
I had promised.
Now someone had put a price tag on that promise.
My phone rang.
It was Vanessa.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
"What?""
Her voice sounded exhausted.
"Marcus, we need to talk.""
"We have nothing to discuss.""
"Please. Just listen.""
I glanced at Daniel.
He gestured for me to continue.
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
"I know what Richard told you. But he wasn't being honest about everything.""
"Then tell me the truth.""
"He said the house sale would only be temporary. He promised the property would be transferred back after the investment was completed.""
"Did you believe him?""
"I wanted to.""
"Why?""
She began crying.
"Because I was drowning, Marcus.""
I said nothing.
She continued.
"After we got married, I realized how much money you spent on Lily. Her school, her activities, her clothes. You never questioned it. But when Brianna needed money for her dance program, you asked whether it was necessary.""
I frowned.
"That's not true.""
"It is!""
"Vanessa, I paid for Brianna's dance program for three years.""
She went quiet.
Then she said something that surprised me.
"Richard told me you were hiding money from me.""
I stared at the phone.
"What?""
"He said Sarah had arranged everything so you could keep your wealth separate from the marriage. He told me I would eventually be left with nothing.""
I looked at Daniel.
He was writing something down.
"Vanessa, you had access to our household accounts. You had a credit card, a car, and everything you needed.""
"That wasn't the point!""
"What was the point?""
She whispered, "I wanted to matter.""
For a moment, I felt something close to pity.
Then I remembered Lily standing beside the birthday cake.
Her trembling hands.
Her pink dress.
Her question about why she wasn't allowed in the family photograph.
"You mattered enough for me to trust you with my daughter," I said.
"And you used that trust to hurt her.""
Vanessa began sobbing.
"Can I see Lily?""
"No.""
"Marcus, she's my stepdaughter.""
"Then you should have treated her like one.""
I ended the call.
Daniel looked at me.
"That was difficult.""
I nodded.
Then he pointed toward the property records.
"There's something else. The transfer was scheduled to close tomorrow morning.""
"Can we stop it?""
"I'm preparing an emergency injunction. But we need the original trust documents and evidence of the forged authorization.""
I opened Sarah's red notebook.
"Would this help?""
Daniel examined the final pages.
His eyes narrowed.
"Marcus, look at this entry.""
He pointed to a date.
Two weeks before Sarah died.
Beside it was a handwritten note.
Lake property — original deed deposited with safe custodian.
"Who's the custodian?"" I asked.
Daniel turned the page.
There was a name.
*Eleanor Hayes.*
I recognized it immediately.
Eleanor had been Sarah's closest friend since college. She was also a retired judge who had attended our wedding.
"Do you know where she lives?""
Daniel nodded.
"I have her contact information.""
We drove to her house that afternoon.
Eleanor opened the door wearing a gray cardigan, her silver hair tied neatly behind her head.
When she saw me, her expression softened.
"Marcus. I've been waiting for this day.""
My stomach tightened.
"You knew?""
She stepped aside.
"Come in.""
We sat in her living room.
She brought out a small wooden box and placed it on the table.
"Sarah gave me this three days before she died.""
I opened it.
Inside was the original deed to the lake house, a sealed envelope, and a flash drive.
Eleanor looked directly at me.
"Sarah asked me to keep these safe until someone tried to interfere with Lily's inheritance.""
I picked up the flash drive.
"What's on it?""
Eleanor folded her hands.
"An audio recording Sarah made during a meeting with Richard and Vanessa.""
I stared at her.
"Vanessa was there?""
Eleanor nodded.
"She was. And Marcus, I think you should hear it.""
Daniel connected the flash drive to his laptop.
A recording began.
Sarah's voice filled the room.
Then came Richard's.
"Sarah, you're making this unnecessarily difficult.""
Sarah answered quietly.
"My daughter will never be used as a source of income.""
Another voice spoke.
Vanessa.
"Nobody is trying to hurt Lily. We just want things to be fair.""
Sarah responded:
"Fair? You came into my home asking how much money my daughter would inherit before I'd even finished writing my will.""
I felt my stomach twist.
Then Richard said something that made Eleanor close her eyes.
"Sarah, you won't be around forever. Marcus will eventually move on. When that happens, we need to make sure Vanessa is protected.""
Sarah's answer was chilling.
"Then I suggest you both leave before I have this conversation documented.""
The recording continued.
But suddenly, another voice interrupted.
A man's voice I didn't recognize.
"Richard, stop. You're forgetting the other agreement.""
Daniel paused the recording.
"Who is that?""
Eleanor shook her head.
"I never knew.""
I looked at the laptop.
"Play the rest.""
The unknown man spoke again.
"Sarah doesn't know about the second account. If she discovers where the money really came from, all of us are finished.""
My blood ran cold.
Because Richard wasn't the only person involved.
May you like
Someone else had been hiding money from Sarah.
And that person had been close enough to attend the meeting.
