Chapter 2: The Secret in Sarah's Blue Box
Four years earlier, Sarah had been lying in a hospital bed, her fingers wrapped around mine.
Lily had been asleep in the chair beside us.
Sarah had asked me to promise something.
"Marcus, whatever happens, make sure Lily never has to beg anyone to belong.""
I had kissed her forehead.
"She'll always have me.""
Sarah smiled faintly.
"I know. But people change when money gets involved.""
At the time, I thought she was talking about ordinary inheritance arrangements.
Now, standing in my own home, I wondered how much she had understood about the people around me.
I carried Lily into the kitchen and placed her gently on a chair.
"Sweetheart, can you tell Daddy exactly what happened to the blue box?""
She wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.
"I saw Vanessa take it two nights ago.""
"Where was it?""
"In your office. Behind the books.""
I frowned.
The blue box had been hidden in a locked drawer inside my desk.
"Did you see her open it?""
Lily nodded.
"She had papers on the table. She said I wasn't supposed to touch Mommy's things.""
My throat tightened.
"What did she do with the box?""
"She gave it to Uncle Richard.""
I closed my eyes.
There it was.
The missing piece.
I called my attorney, Daniel Brooks.
He answered on the second ring.
"Marcus? Everything okay?""
"Daniel, I need you to come to my house immediately. It's about Sarah's estate.""
There was a pause.
"What happened?""
"Someone took documents from my office. I think Vanessa and her brother are involved.""
His voice became serious.
"Don't confront anyone else until I arrive. And Marcus, do not sign anything.""
"Why would I sign anything?""
"Because three days ago, someone contacted my office claiming to represent you. They requested copies of Lily's trust documents.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"Who?""
"They used your name, but the signature didn't match yours. I refused the request.""
I stared at the kitchen counter.
"Did they tell you why they wanted the documents?""
"They claimed you wanted to revise the beneficiary arrangements.""
I looked toward the dining room, where Vanessa's birthday guests were beginning to leave.
"Daniel, I think my wife is trying to take my daughter's inheritance.""
"Then we need to establish exactly what she's done.""
When I ended the call, Lily was watching me.
"Are you mad at me, Daddy?""
I immediately knelt in front of her.
"No, baby. Why would you think that?""
"Because Vanessa says I'm always making trouble.""
My chest ached.
"Listen to me. You have never been trouble. Not once. Do you understand?""
She nodded, but her eyes filled again.
"Then why does she hate me?""
I couldn't answer.
Instead, I held her close.
A few minutes later, footsteps approached.
Vanessa appeared in the kitchen, still wearing her birthday dress.
She looked irritated.
"Marcus, we need to talk.""
I stood between her and Lily.
"Not now.""
"Actually, now. You embarrassed me in front of everyone.""
"You pushed an eight-year-old child out of a photograph.""
"I barely touched her!""
"She almost fell over a chair.""
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
"She was standing where Brianna was supposed to stand.""
"She was standing beside her father.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Can you stop making everything about Sarah?""
I stared at her.
"This has nothing to do with Sarah. It has everything to do with how you treat Lily.""
She looked at my daughter.
"Go upstairs, Lily. The adults are talking.""
Lily immediately moved closer to me.
I shook my head.
"Don't give my daughter instructions.""
Vanessa's face reddened.
"This is my house too!""
"Then start acting like someone who understands what family means.""
She stepped closer and lowered her voice.
"You're going to regret humiliating me.""
Before I could respond, Brianna entered the kitchen.
She was twelve, wearing a glittering birthday outfit.
"Mom, Grandma says we're leaving.""
Vanessa turned toward her.
"Not yet, sweetheart.""
Brianna glanced at Lily.
"Is she still crying?""
I felt Lily's little hand slip into mine.
"Brianna," I said firmly, "that's enough.""
She shrugged.
"Mom said Lily isn't really part of our family anyway.""
Vanessa immediately grabbed her daughter's wrist.
"Brianna, go wait outside.""
But I had heard enough.
I took Lily upstairs.
As we entered my office, she pointed toward the bottom drawer.
"That's where Mommy's box was.""
I unlocked it.
Empty.
The space where Sarah's documents had been stored was completely bare.
But something else caught my attention.
A small white envelope had been pushed behind the drawer's wooden lining.
I pulled it out.
My name was written across the front in Sarah's handwriting.
My hands began trembling.
Inside was a single folded note.
Marcus, if you're reading this, someone has probably started asking questions about Lily's inheritance.
I swallowed hard and continued.
Do not trust anyone who tells you the trust was created only for financial protection. There is something else you need to know.
At the bottom, Sarah had written:
The person who tries to take Lily's inheritance may be someone you already trust.
I read the sentence twice.
Then I noticed a second sheet of paper.
It was a photocopy of a legal document.
The title read:
*THE WILLIAMS FAMILY PROTECTION TRUST.*
Under the beneficiary section was Lily's full name.
But beneath it, someone had handwritten another name.
Vanessa Williams.
And beside Vanessa's name was a date from two weeks earlier.
I heard footsteps behind me.
"Marcus?""
I turned.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
Her eyes went straight to the document in my hand.
For the first time since I had known her, she looked genuinely terrified.
"Where did you get that?"" she whispered.
I held up the paper.
"That's what I was about to ask you.""
She reached for it.
I stepped back.
Then she said something that made the room feel ten degrees colder.
"Marcus, you don't understand. Sarah never intended that money to belong to Lily.""
I stared at her.
"Then why is Lily's name on the trust?""
Vanessa's lips parted.
She looked toward the hallway to make sure nobody was listening.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Because your late wife knew what I was capable of.""
