Chapter 1: The Photograph That Changed Everything

The photographer turned his camera toward me, his expression suddenly serious.

"Mr. Williams, I think you need to see who handed Vanessa that envelope.""

I tightened my arms around Lily, who was still crying against my shoulder.

"Show me.""

He swiped through several photographs before stopping at one.

The image showed Vanessa standing near the hallway, speaking to a man in a dark suit. He was holding a glass of champagne in one hand and a familiar brown envelope in the other.

I recognized him immediately.

"Richard?"" I whispered.

Richard Coleman was Vanessa's older brother. He had arrived nearly an hour late, claiming he had been stuck in traffic.

But the photograph showed something else.

Richard was handing Vanessa my late wife's envelope.

"Do you have a picture of what happened before this?"" I asked.

The photographer nodded.

"My assistant took these while setting up the lighting. I didn't think anything of it until I saw what happened with your daughter.""

He showed me another photograph.

Vanessa was slipping the envelope inside her handbag.

And Richard was pointing toward the staircase leading to my home office.

My stomach tightened.

"How long ago was this?""

"About twenty minutes before the birthday portrait.""

I looked toward Vanessa.

She was standing beside the birthday cake, furiously whispering to her mother, Patricia. Her expensive champagne-colored dress shimmered under the chandelier.

When she noticed me watching, she immediately stopped talking.

"Marcus!"" she called.

"What are you doing? You're making everyone uncomfortable.""

I approached her, keeping Lily in my arms.

"Where is the envelope?""

Vanessa blinked.

"What envelope?""

"The brown envelope with Sarah's name on it.""

Her mother stepped forward.

"Marcus, this is neither the time nor the place.""

I turned toward her.

"Then perhaps you can explain why your daughter was photographed taking something from my office.""

Vanessa's expression hardened.

"Are you seriously going to interrogate me at my own birthday party?""

"Answer the question.""

She glanced at Richard.

It was brief, but I caught it.

Richard put down his champagne glass.

"Look, Marcus, maybe we should discuss this privately.""

"No. You can explain it right here.""

Lily lifted her head from my shoulder.

"Daddy, is that Mommy's envelope?""

I kissed her forehead.

"Yes, sweetheart.""

She looked toward Vanessa.

"Mommy said that envelope was mine.""

The room became even quieter.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"She's eight, Marcus. She doesn't understand what she's talking about.""

I looked directly at her.

"Then explain it to me.""

She folded her arms.

"Sarah left a bunch of old paperwork. I was cleaning your office because your desk was a disaster. I found it, and I put it somewhere safe.""

"Where?""

"Somewhere you don't need to worry about.""

Richard interrupted.

"Vanessa, just tell him.""

She shot him an angry look.

"Don't tell me what to do.""

That reaction told me more than either of their explanations.

I turned toward the photographer.

"Please send me those photographs.""

"Of course, sir.""

Vanessa stepped between us.

"You're not taking anything from my birthday party!""

I stared at her.

"Those are photographs of my daughter and my property. I believe I have every right to see them.""

Patricia shook her head.

"This is exactly why Vanessa struggles with your situation. Everything always comes back to your first wife and that little girl.""

I felt Lily's fingers tighten around my shirt.

"My daughter is not a situation.""

Vanessa sighed.

"Marcus, you're ruining everything. I have forty people here. Can we please stop pretending Sarah's belongings are more important than my birthday?""

I looked at the cake, the flowers, the expensive decorations, and the people who had watched an eight-year-old girl get shoved away from a family photograph.

Then I looked at my daughter.

Her pink dress was wrinkled from being held against my chest. Her little silver shoes dangled beneath my arms.

"Come on, sweetheart. We're leaving.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"You're not taking her anywhere until we finish talking.""

"Move.""

"Marcus, don't you dare speak to me like that.""

I walked past her.

Behind me, Richard said something that made my blood run cold.

"Vanessa, you need to tell him about the trust.""

I stopped.

Slowly, I turned around.

"What trust?""

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Richard closed his eyes.

Patricia grabbed his arm.

"Richard! Shut your mouth!""

I looked between them.

"What trust are you talking about?""

Vanessa forced a laugh.

"He's had too much champagne. He's talking nonsense.""

But Richard wasn't laughing.

He looked at me with an expression I had never seen before.

Fear.

Then he spoke.

"Marcus, your late wife left Lily a substantial inheritance. And Vanessa has been trying to get access to it.""

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Sarah had died four years earlier.

Before her death, she had worked as an attorney specializing in estate planning. She had always been careful about Lily's future.

I remembered her telling me that everything was arranged.

I had never questioned it.

"What inheritance?"" I asked.

Richard lowered his voice.

"Ask your wife what she did with the documents.""

Vanessa suddenly slapped his arm.

"Get out!""

Richard stumbled backward.

And then Lily whispered something into my ear.

"Daddy, Mommy told me not to let Vanessa take the little blue box.""

I pulled back slightly.

"What little blue box, sweetheart?""

Lily pointed toward the staircase.

"The one Mommy gave me before she went to heaven. Vanessa took it from your office.""

My heart began pounding.

May you like

Because I knew exactly which box she meant.

And I knew what was inside.
