Chapter 14: The Truth About Lily's Birth
I stared at the document.
Then I laughed.
Not because anything was funny.
Because the alternative was screaming.
"That's impossible.""
Daniel examined the registration.
"We need to verify the amendment and obtain the original hospital records. A changed birth registration does not establish biological parentage.""
I looked at Michael.
"Why would Richard put his name on my daughter's birth certificate?""
Michael slowly shook his head.
"Because he believed it would give him leverage over Sarah.""
I turned toward him.
"Explain.""
He placed another document on the table.
"Sarah discovered the falsified registration shortly before she died. Richard had been telling people that he was Lily's biological father.""
My stomach twisted.
"Was he?""
Michael looked directly at me.
"No.""
He took a breath.
"Sarah and I had been separated for almost two years before she met you. We had no children together. Richard knew that. He simply wanted to create doubt.""
I looked toward Daniel.
"Can someone change a birth registration without the father's knowledge?""
"It depends on the circumstances and applicable procedures, but an amendment requires documentation. We need to obtain the underlying records.""
Michael nodded.
"That's why I brought this.""
He opened his folder and removed a laboratory report.
It was dated six months before Sarah died.
The report contained a parentage test comparing Lily's DNA with mine.
The result was clear.
I was Lily's biological father.
My hands began trembling.
"Why did Sarah do this?""
Michael answered quietly.
"Because Richard had started threatening to challenge your parental rights. Sarah wanted undeniable evidence that Lily was yours.""
I looked at the report again.
For eight years, I had never questioned that Lily was my daughter.
She had my eyes, my stubbornness, and the same little dimple Sarah used to kiss whenever she was happy.
But now I understood why Sarah had arranged the test.
She had seen the danger coming.
Daniel carefully placed the report into a protective folder.
"This is important. We'll have the laboratory verify the records and obtain certified copies.""
I looked at Michael.
"Why did you wait until now?""
His expression changed.
"Because I was afraid.""
"Of Richard?""
"Of what he could do. He had already destroyed my reputation once. I thought staying away was the only way to protect Sarah.""
I stood.
"And while you were protecting yourself, my wife was fighting alone.""
Michael lowered his head.
"You're right.""
For a moment, I wanted to blame him for everything.
Then I remembered that Sarah had chosen not to tell me certain things because she believed she could handle them herself.
We were all carrying different pieces of the same tragedy.
Daniel's phone rang.
He answered, listened, and immediately stood.
"Marcus, the bank has confirmed the $500,000 withdrawal request was stopped. However, investigators have discovered another attempted transfer.""
"From where?""
"An account connected to Richard's consulting company.""
"How much?""
"Three hundred and twenty thousand dollars.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"Can they recover it?""
"They're tracing it.""
Michael suddenly looked toward the conference room door.
"There's something else you need to know.""
"What?""
He hesitated.
"Vanessa contacted me yesterday.""
I stared at him.
"Why?""
"She offered me money to disappear again.""
Daniel immediately looked up.
"Do you have proof?""
Michael took out his phone.
"She left me a voicemail.""
He played it.
Vanessa's voice filled the room.
"Michael, please understand. This has gone too far. Richard says we can settle everything if you stop talking to Marcus. You can have whatever you want, but you need to stay away from Lily.""
A pause.
Then her voice became colder.
"That little girl has already cost me too much.""
I closed my eyes.
Daniel saved the recording.
"We'll preserve that.""
I looked at Michael.
"Did you accept?""
He shook his head.
"No. I came here because I promised Sarah I would protect Lily if anything happened.""
I nodded slowly.
Then my phone rang.
Patricia.
I answered.
"Marcus?""
Her voice was frantic.
"Vanessa is here.""
I stood immediately.
"Where?""
"At my house. She's looking for Sarah's original will.""
"Don't give her anything.""
"I haven't! But she's threatening me.""
I looked at Daniel.
He immediately grabbed his keys.
"Stay where you are," I told Patricia.
"We're coming.""
When we arrived, Vanessa was standing in the living room with a suitcase beside her.
Patricia was crying.
Vanessa turned toward me.
"Marcus.""
I looked at the suitcase.
"Going somewhere?""
She wiped her cheeks.
"Richard has disappeared. The bank has frozen my accounts. Everyone is blaming me for things I didn't do.""
I stared at her.
"You admitted changing Sarah's medication.""
Her face crumpled.
"I didn't understand what I was signing.""
"Then why did you tell me you didn't know it would hurt her?""
She covered her mouth.
Patricia stepped forward.
"Vanessa, tell him everything.""
Vanessa turned on her.
"You betrayed me!""
Patricia shook her head.
"No. I helped you for too long. I'm finished.""
Vanessa looked at me.
"Marcus, please. I loved you.""
I remained silent.
She continued.
"I wanted a family. I wanted Brianna and Tyler to have a father who loved them. I wanted security.""
"You had all of that.""
"Not enough!""
I looked at her.
"Nothing was ever enough because you wanted what belonged to a child.""
Vanessa suddenly reached into her handbag.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
"Mrs. Williams, keep your hands where we can see them.""
She froze.
Then slowly removed a sealed envelope.
"Sarah left this with Richard. He gave it to me before he disappeared.""
I stared at it.
My name was written across the front.
Vanessa placed it on the table.
"Read it. Then you'll understand why Sarah never trusted me.""
I opened the envelope.
Inside was one final letter.
Marcus, if Vanessa is still in your life when you read this, then I have failed to protect you from the truth.
My hands shook.
There is one thing I never told you about the night Lily was born.
I continued.
Richard was not the only person who tried to claim responsibility for our daughter.
At the bottom, Sarah had written:
The original birth records were changed because someone at the hospital was paid to destroy the truth.
I looked up.
"Who paid them?""
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
She whispered:
"Your wife did.""
I stared at her.
"What?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"Sarah paid someone to change the records.""
For a moment, I couldn't breathe.
Daniel immediately took the letter.
"That claim needs verification. We are not accepting it as fact.""
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
She looked directly at me.
"Marcus, Sarah had a reason. She was protecting someone. And the person she was protecting wasn't Richard.""
My phone vibrated.
An email had arrived from an investigator.
The subject line read:
*ORIGINAL HOSPITAL RECORDS RECOVERED — URGENT.*
I opened the attachment.
The first page showed Sarah's admission records.
The second showed the original birth registration.
And the third contained a handwritten note signed by Sarah.
If anything happens to me, Marcus must know that the person responsible for Lily's birth registration was not acting alone.

Beneath it was another name.
