Chapter 5: The Man With the Briefcase
Richard entered the house without knocking.
He wore a dark navy suit and carried the same leather briefcase I had seen in the photographer's pictures.
His eyes immediately went to the documents in my hand.
"Marcus," he said calmly.
"We need to talk.""
I stood in front of Sarah's cabinet.
"You've got five seconds to explain why you stole my daughter's legal documents.""
Richard placed his briefcase on the hallway table.
"First, lower your voice. Lily doesn't need to hear this.""
"Don't use my daughter as an excuse.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"Marcus, Richard is trying to help us.""
I laughed.
"Help us? He submitted a fraudulent request to change Lily's trust.""
Richard adjusted his cufflinks.
"That's a serious accusation.""
"Then explain why your name is on the application.""
He looked at Vanessa.
She gave him a small nod.
Richard opened his briefcase and removed a folder.
"Sarah's estate was poorly structured. She created unnecessary complications. I was trying to simplify the arrangements.""
"For whom?""
"For the family.""
I took one step closer.
"Which family?""
He ignored the question and placed the folder on the table.
"Marcus, the trust has accumulated considerable assets. Managing that money requires professional oversight. Vanessa is your wife. She should have some authority over household financial planning.""
"Household financial planning doesn't include stealing from an eight-year-old.""
Richard sighed.
"You're emotional. That's understandable. But Sarah's documents are old. There are better ways to handle this.""
I opened his folder.
The first page was a proposed amendment to Lily's trust.
The second page contained a signature that looked remarkably similar to mine.
I stared at it.
"That's my signature.""
Richard nodded.
"Exactly.""
"I never signed this.""
His expression barely changed.
"Perhaps you don't remember.""
I felt my jaw tighten.
"Are you seriously suggesting I signed a document I never saw?""
Vanessa stepped between us.
"Marcus, please. Richard explained everything to me. If Lily's trust could help the household, everyone would benefit.""
I looked at her.
"Everyone except Lily.""
"That's not true!""
"Then why does this amendment transfer control to you?""
She hesitated.
Richard quickly interrupted.
"Because Vanessa is your wife. If something happened to you, someone would need to manage the family finances.""
"Sarah already appointed a trustee.""
"That trustee is difficult to reach.""
"Daniel Brooks?""
Richard said nothing.
I smiled without humor.
"He's my attorney. He's been managing Sarah's arrangements since before she died.""
Richard's expression changed.
"Daniel has his own interests.""
Before I could respond, the doorbell rang.
I looked downstairs.
Daniel stood outside, holding a document case.
I opened the door.
"Thank God you're here.""
He entered and immediately noticed Richard.
"Mr. Coleman.""
"Daniel.""
They exchanged the kind of greeting that sounded polite but carried years of hostility.
Daniel looked at the documents on the table.
"Marcus, don't touch anything else. I need to photograph these.""
Richard closed his briefcase.
"Those are private business documents.""
Daniel pulled out his phone.
"Then you shouldn't have brought them into a house where the person whose signature appears on them denies signing.""
Vanessa stepped forward.
"This is ridiculous. You're treating my family like criminals.""
Daniel looked at her.
"Mrs. Williams, I haven't accused anyone of anything. I'm simply preserving evidence.""
Richard picked up his briefcase.
"We're leaving.""
Daniel moved slightly toward the hallway.
"That's fine. But before you go, I'd like you to answer one question.""
Richard stopped.
"What?""
"Why did you submit a trust amendment using Marcus's signature when the original trust explicitly prohibits unilateral changes to Lily's beneficiary status?""
Richard's silence lasted several seconds.
Then he looked at Vanessa.
She immediately turned pale.
Daniel continued.
"I have the original trust agreement. I also have Sarah's correspondence documenting the safeguards she established.""
Patricia sank onto the hallway bench.
"Richard, tell him what you did.""
Richard snapped.
"Stay out of this!""
Patricia began crying.
"Sarah knew. She knew you were going to try this.""
I turned toward her.
"What does she mean?""
Patricia looked at me.
"Richard wasn't supposed to have access to the trust at all. Sarah removed him as a financial adviser after discovering he had moved money from another client's account.""
Richard's face hardened.
"That was a misunderstanding.""
Daniel opened his document case.
"Actually, it wasn't. The firm dismissed you after an internal investigation.""
I stared at Richard.
"Then why were you involved in Lily's inheritance?""
Vanessa suddenly shouted.
"Because I asked him to help me!""
The admission silenced everyone.
She looked at me, tears streaming down her face.
"I thought if I controlled the trust, I could finally make decisions in this family. You never listened to me about money. Everything was always Lily, Lily, Lily.""
I felt something inside me go cold.
"She is eight years old, Vanessa.""
"And she has more money than Brianna and Tyler will ever have!""
There it was.
The truth.
Not love. Not fairness. Not family.
Jealousy.
Daniel quietly put his phone away.
"Marcus, I think we've heard enough.""
Richard suddenly grabbed the folder from the table.
Daniel reached for it.
"Put that down.""
Richard shoved him.
The folder fell, scattering papers across the floor.
Lily screamed from the bedroom.
I rushed toward her.
She was standing beside Sarah's old photograph, crying.
"Daddy, I heard everything.""
I knelt.
"I'm sorry, sweetheart.""
She pointed toward the hallway.
"Uncle Richard said Mommy stole money from people.""
I looked over my shoulder.
Richard was staring at her.
Lily continued.
"Is that why Mommy told me to keep the little red notebook?""
My heart stopped.
"What little red notebook?""
Lily reached into the pocket of her pink dress.
She pulled out a tiny notebook with a worn leather cover.
"I found it in Mommy's jewelry box. I thought it was my birthday present.""
Daniel stared at it.
Then his expression changed completely.
"Marcus," he whispered, "that's Sarah's original financial record.""
I took the notebook.
Inside the front cover, Sarah had written one sentence.
If Richard ever comes looking for the trust, check the last account number.
Daniel turned several pages.
Then he stopped.
His face went pale.
"Marcus, this isn't just evidence of a forged signature.""
"What is it?""
May you like
Daniel looked directly at Richard.
"It's proof that someone transferred money out of Sarah's estate before she died.""
