Chapter 6: The Money That Disappeared Before Sarah Died

Daniel sat at my dining room table with Sarah's red notebook open in front of him.

The house had finally become quiet.

The birthday decorations were still hanging from the ceiling, but the balloons were beginning to sag. Half-eaten cake sat on the counter.

It was the strangest setting imaginable for the discovery that someone might have stolen from my dying wife.

Lily sat beside me, holding her stuffed rabbit.

Vanessa stood near the kitchen entrance.

Richard had been told to remain in the living room while Daniel reviewed the documents.

Patricia was sitting alone on the couch, staring at her hands.

Daniel turned another page.

"Marcus, Sarah recorded every significant transaction connected to the trust. She was meticulous.""

"Can you tell where the money went?""

"Not yet. But look at these entries.""

He turned the notebook toward me.

There were dates, account numbers, and handwritten amounts.

One entry was circled three times.

*$185,000 — TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION — R. COLEMAN.*

I stared at the page.

"That's Richard.""

Daniel nodded.

"According to these records, the transfer happened six weeks before Sarah died.""

I felt sick.

"Was the money recovered?""

Daniel examined the next page.

"Sarah wrote that she had contacted the bank. She also noted that the transfer was unauthorized.""

I looked toward Richard.

"Did you take money from my dying wife?""

Richard stood up.

"This is absurd. Those records are incomplete.""

Daniel didn't look up.

"Then you should have no problem explaining them.""

Richard stepped closer.

"Sarah asked me to move money into a temporary investment account. I was doing her a favor.""

"Where is the account?"" I demanded.

"Closed.""

"When?""

Richard hesitated.

"Several years ago.""

Daniel turned another page.

"That's interesting. Because Sarah wrote the account was never approved by the trust's investment committee.""

Richard slammed his hand on the table.

"She was sick! She was confused!""

I stood immediately.

"Don't you dare.""

He pointed at the notebook.

"You're taking the words of a dying woman over mine?""

I stepped closer.

"She was my wife. She was Lily's mother. And she trusted you.""

Richard looked away.

Daniel continued reviewing the notebook.

"There's another entry.""

He read it quietly.

"Three days before Sarah died, she instructed the bank to freeze the account and notify her attorney.""

I swallowed.

"Did they?""

"According to the next note, the bank acknowledged the request.""

Daniel turned another page.

Then he stopped.

"Marcus, there's a name here.""

"Whose?""

He pointed.

*Patricia Coleman.*

I looked toward the couch.

Patricia covered her mouth.

"Why is your mother's name there?"" I asked Vanessa.

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know.""

Patricia slowly stood.

"I signed something.""

Everyone turned toward her.

"What did you sign?"" I asked.

Patricia's eyes filled with tears.

"Richard told me Sarah wanted me to help with the transfer. He said it was temporary. He needed another authorized witness.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"Did you know the money belonged to Lily?""

Patricia nodded.

"Yes.""

"Did you receive any of it?""

She looked at Vanessa.

Then she whispered, "Some.""

My chest tightened.

"How much?""

Patricia began crying.

"Twenty-five thousand dollars.""

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"Mom!""

Patricia turned toward her.

"Don't you dare pretend you didn't know!""

Richard laughed bitterly.

"You're all making this sound worse than it was.""

Daniel closed the notebook.

"Mr. Coleman, I strongly recommend that you stop talking.""

Richard ignored him.

He turned toward me.

"Marcus, you have a wife and children. Think carefully before destroying everything. You can still settle this privately.""

I stared at him.

"You're offering me a settlement?""

"I'm offering you a solution.""

"You stole from my daughter.""

"No one stole anything!""

"Then where is the money?""

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel gathered the papers.

"We'll be requesting a full forensic accounting. The trust will also be protected against further unauthorized activity.""

Vanessa suddenly began pacing.

"This is insane. I didn't even know about the original transfer.""

Patricia looked at her.

"Yes, you did.""

"Stop lying!""

"You were the one who asked Richard to bring the money back when Sarah started asking questions.""

I turned toward Vanessa.

"Is that true?""

She shook her head violently.

"Mom is trying to save herself.""

Patricia pulled a tissue from her handbag.

"Vanessa, I helped you because you told me Marcus would eventually leave us with nothing. You said Sarah had arranged everything to make Lily richer than your children.""

Vanessa's voice cracked.

"Because that's what she did!""

I stared at my wife.

"You're angry because Sarah protected her daughter?""

Vanessa looked at me with open resentment.

"She made sure Lily would never need anything. What about my children? What about Brianna and Tyler?""

I took a slow breath.

"Your children have two parents. They have their own future. But Lily lost her mother. Sarah wanted to make sure she was protected.""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Everything has always been about Lily.""

I looked toward my daughter.

She was sitting quietly, turning the silver bracelet Sarah had given her before she died.

Then she asked a question that broke my heart.

"Daddy, if Mommy left me money, does that mean Vanessa doesn't have to love me?""

I immediately knelt beside her.

"No, sweetheart. Money has nothing to do with love.""

"But she said I took everything.""

I held her hands.

"You didn't take anything. Your mother worked hard to make sure you would have a safe future. You deserve every bit of that protection.""

Lily nodded slowly.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Can I ask something?""

Daniel softened his expression.

"Of course.""

"Did my mommy leave anything else for me?""

Daniel glanced at the red notebook.

"She left several things, sweetheart.""

He turned to the final page.

A small folded piece of paper was attached to the inside cover.

Daniel carefully removed it.

His eyes moved across the handwriting.

Then he looked at me.

"Marcus, I think you should read this privately.""

I opened the paper.

Sarah's handwriting was unmistakable.

Marcus, if the money disappears, don't waste your time chasing the people who took it. Find the original account.

Below that was a bank name, a reference number, and a date.

But the final sentence made my blood run cold.

The original account is not in Richard's name. It is in the name of the person you will least expect.

I looked up.

Vanessa was watching me.

Her face had gone completely white.

Daniel took the paper from my hand and checked the account number against his records.

Then he whispered:

"Marcus, the account is registered under Vanessa's maiden name.""

I stared at my wife.

She stepped backward.

"That's impossible.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No. What's impossible is that this account received another transfer yesterday.""

My phone vibrated.

A bank notification appeared on the screen.

<text color="secondary" size="xs" weight="medium">NEW ACCOUNT ALERT</text>

*A withdrawal request of $500,000 has been submitted.*

The account holder's name appeared beneath it.

Vanessa Coleman.

I slowly raised my eyes.

"Vanessa, what did you do yesterday?""

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Richard.

May you like

And Richard whispered the words that changed everything.

"She wasn't supposed to withdraw it until after the wedding.""
