Chapter 13: The Husband Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For several seconds, I couldn't speak.

The man on the phone had just identified himself as Sarah's first husband.

A man I had believed was dead for more than a decade.

"Where are you?"" I finally asked.

"Atlanta. I've been back for three weeks.""

"Why?""

"Because someone contacted me and told me Sarah's daughter was in danger.""

I looked toward Daniel.

He immediately began writing down the details.

"Who contacted you?""

"Patricia.""

I turned toward Sarah's former mother-in-law.

Patricia was sitting on the sofa, her face buried in her hands.

"Why would Patricia contact you?""

Michael sighed.

"Because she knows what happened to Sarah. And she knows what Vanessa has been doing.""

I stepped outside.

"Listen carefully. I don't know who you are, but you're going to explain everything.""

"I understand.""

"Start with why Sarah believed you were dead.""

There was a long silence.

Then Michael spoke.

"Fourteen years ago, Sarah and I were married. We were young, and I was working in financial consulting. I discovered that someone at my company was stealing money from clients. Before I could report it, I was involved in a serious car accident.""

"Sarah told me you died.""

"That's what she was told. But I survived. I spent months recovering under another name because the people involved were threatening my family.""

"Why didn't you contact her?""

"I tried. But someone intercepted my messages. Eventually, I received a letter supposedly written by Sarah telling me she wanted nothing to do with me.""

I stared at the driveway.

"Who sent it?""

"I later discovered it came from Richard Coleman.""

My stomach tightened.

"Richard knew about you?""

"He knew about the financial investigation. He was connected to the people I was investigating.""

I remembered Sarah's recording.

Vanessa knew about Lily long before you met her.

I asked the question I had been avoiding.

"How did Vanessa know Sarah?""

"Because Vanessa was Richard's assistant at the time. She helped him gather information about Sarah's finances.""

I felt sick.

"Are you telling me Vanessa knew Sarah before she married me?""

"Yes.""

"And she deliberately approached me?""

Michael was silent.

Then he answered.

"That's what I believe.""

I closed my eyes.

The birthday photograph came back to me.

Vanessa pushing Lily away.

Her cruel words.

This picture is for real family only.

Suddenly, I understood something.

Vanessa hadn't simply rejected my daughter.

She had been trying to erase Sarah from our family since before she entered our lives.

"Where can we meet?"" I asked.

"At the old courthouse on Peachtree Street. There's something I need to give you.""

Daniel joined me.

"Marcus, don't meet him alone. We need to verify his identity first.""

I agreed.

Within an hour, Daniel had confirmed Michael's identity through public records and independent documentation.

We arranged to meet at a private conference room in Daniel's office.

When Michael entered, I immediately recognized the resemblance.

He had Sarah's old wedding photograph in his hand.

He was in his late forties, with gray beginning to show at his temples.

His eyes were tired.

But he looked like a man who had carried a secret for too long.

"Marcus," he said.

I didn't offer my hand.

"Tell me why Sarah married me.""

Michael placed the photograph on the table.

"Because she loved you.""

"That's not what your message suggested.""

He sat down.

"Sarah discovered that Richard was investigating her finances. She believed he was trying to gain access to the money she had inherited from her parents.""

"Why didn't she report him?""

"She did. But Richard had friends in places where complaints disappeared.""

Daniel leaned forward.

"What does this have to do with Marcus?""

Michael looked at me.

"Sarah learned that Richard had started monitoring her family. She was afraid he would use her past marriage to discredit her.""

I frowned.

"How?""

"By claiming she had hidden assets or misrepresented her marital history.""

He removed another document from his folder.

It was a photograph of Vanessa standing beside Richard outside a restaurant.

The date was printed underneath.

Four months before Vanessa and I met.

I stared at it.

Michael continued.

"Sarah met Vanessa at a charity event. Vanessa introduced herself as a financial adviser working with Richard. Sarah immediately recognized her from the investigation.""

"Did she tell me?""

"No. She wanted to protect you and Lily.""

I looked at the photograph.

"Then why didn't she warn me about Vanessa?""

"She tried.""

He opened a second envelope.

Inside was a letter addressed to me.

Sarah's handwriting covered both pages.

Marcus, if Vanessa ever becomes part of your life, please don't mistake her interest in our family for kindness.

My eyes blurred.

I continued reading.

She has been asking questions about Lily's future, her inheritance, and our household finances. I don't know what Richard has promised her, but I know she is not acting alone.

The final paragraph made my chest ache.

If I am no longer here, please remember that Lily does not need a perfect family. She needs one person who will never abandon her.

I lowered the letter.

Michael watched me quietly.

"There's another reason I came back.""

"What?""

He removed a small flash drive.

"Before Sarah died, she sent me a message. She said she had discovered where Richard was hiding the money and that she had evidence connecting Vanessa to the medical records.""

Daniel took the drive.

"What's on it?""

"Copies of the original emails and an audio recording. But there's one more file.""

He opened his laptop.

A video appeared.

Sarah was sitting in her hospital bed.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Marcus, if you've found this, I'm sorry I couldn't tell you everything sooner.""

I covered my mouth.

Sarah continued.

"There's something I discovered about Lily's birth certificate. Something that Richard and Vanessa have been trying to use against you.""

Daniel paused the video.

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?""

Michael lowered his head.

Then he said:

"Marcus, Sarah discovered that someone had falsified a document connected to Lily's birth.""

My heart began pounding.

"What document?""

Michael looked directly at me.

"Her original birth registration.""

Daniel immediately stopped the video.

He opened the official records he had obtained earlier.

Then he turned his computer toward me.

There were two versions of Lily's birth registration.

One was the original.

The other had been amended.

And the amended version contained a different name under the section marked Biological Father.

I looked at the screen.

My own name was missing.

May you like

In its place was another man's name.

*Richard Coleman.*
