Chapter 3: The Woman Who Knew Too Much
For a moment, neither of us moved.
Vanessa stood in the doorway, one hand gripping the frame.
I looked down at Sarah's letter.
Then back at my wife.
"What exactly did Sarah know?""
Vanessa shook her head.
"You're taking things out of context.""
"Then put them in context.""
"Marcus, please. We can discuss this without making accusations.""
"You just told me Sarah knew what you were capable of.""
She looked away.
I placed the document on my desk.
"Why is your name written on my daughter's trust?""
Vanessa walked into the room and closed the door.
"Because I was trying to protect this family.""
I let out a humorless laugh.
"By putting your name on an inheritance that belongs to an eight-year-old?""
"You don't understand how complicated things became after Sarah died.""
"Explain it.""
She rubbed her forehead.
"Your daughter has money sitting in accounts that nobody can touch. You work constantly. I manage this house, your children, the bills, everything. I thought I deserved some consideration.""
I stared at her.
"You wanted consideration, so you tried to take Lily's inheritance?""
"That's not what happened!""
"Then tell me what happened.""
She sat down.
For the first time that evening, she looked less like the confident woman who had hosted forty guests and more like someone cornered by a truth she couldn't escape.
"Richard told me the trust could be restructured.""
"On whose authority?""
"Your authority.""
"Did I sign anything?""
She hesitated.
"No.""
"Then how did you expect to change it?""
Vanessa looked toward the desk.
"I had a copy of your signature.""
My stomach dropped.
"From where?""
"Some old insurance documents.""
I took a slow breath.
"Did you forge my signature?""
She stood abruptly.
"Don't use that word!""
"Did you?""
"Richard handled the paperwork!""
That was the first honest answer she had given me.
I reached for my phone.
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
"Who are you calling?""
"My attorney.""
"Marcus, wait.""
I ignored her.
She grabbed my wrist.
"Don't do this. Please.""
I pulled away.
"Do not touch me.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"You're going to destroy our marriage over paperwork?""
I looked at her.
"No. You're destroying it over what you did to my daughter.""
A small knock came from the doorway.
Lily stood there, holding her stuffed rabbit.
"Daddy?""
I immediately softened my voice.
"Come here, sweetheart.""
She walked toward me.
Vanessa sighed.
"See? She always has to interrupt.""
I turned sharply.
"Enough.""
Lily stopped walking.
I reached out and took her hand.
Vanessa shook her head.
"This is exactly the problem. You never correct her. You always make me the villain.""
I looked at my daughter.
Then at the woman who had just admitted that her brother handled paperwork using my signature.
"I think we've finished talking.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Where are you going?""
"Somewhere Lily feels safe.""
She followed us into the hallway.
"Marcus, you cannot just walk away from this!""
I turned.
"Watch me.""
As I reached the staircase, my phone rang.
Daniel.
"Marcus, I've reviewed the information you sent.""
"What did you find?""
His voice was unusually tense.
"The trust is more complicated than you think. Sarah established a separate educational and financial protection arrangement for Lily. The principal is substantial.""
"How substantial?""
"Approximately 2.4 million dollars, including the investment growth and property interests.""
I gripped the railing.
Vanessa was standing several feet away.
Her expression told me she had heard enough to understand the number.
Daniel continued.
"But there's another problem. Someone submitted a request to change the trustee structure last month.""
"Who?""
"The application listed you as the person requesting the change.""
"I didn't submit anything.""
"I know. That's why I checked the original records.""
I glanced at Vanessa.
"Who submitted it?""
Daniel paused.
"Richard Coleman.""
I closed my eyes.
"Can you stop the transfer?""
"The request hasn't been approved. But I need to see you tonight. There are documents we should review.""
"Send me the address.""
"I'll come to you. And Marcus?""
"Yes?""
"Sarah left a personal letter with my office. She specifically instructed me not to release it until you asked about suspicious activity involving the trust.""
My heart began pounding.
"What does it say?""
"I haven't opened it. But the envelope contains a note written in Sarah's hand.""
I looked toward Vanessa.
She was no longer pretending to be confused.
She was staring at my phone.
Daniel lowered his voice.
"Marcus, there's one more thing. The letter identifies someone who helped Sarah establish the trust. Someone who was supposed to keep Lily safe if anything happened to her mother.""
"Who?""
Daniel answered.
"Your wife's mother, Patricia.""
I nearly dropped the phone.
Patricia?
The same woman who had stood beside the birthday cake and told me Vanessa deserved a photograph without being reminded of my previous marriage?
The same woman who had watched her granddaughter being pushed away without saying a word?
I slowly turned toward Vanessa.
"Your mother was involved in Sarah's trust?""
Vanessa's face went completely white.
"Daniel needs to stay out of this.""
I stared at her.
"Why?""
She didn't answer.
Instead, she reached into her handbag and pulled out a small silver key.
I recognized it immediately.
It belonged to the locked cabinet in Sarah's old bedroom.
The cabinet I hadn't opened since the week she died.
Vanessa held the key tightly.
"Marcus, there's something Sarah left in that room. Something you were never supposed to find.""
Before I could respond, Lily tugged at my sleeve.
"Daddy?""
I looked down.
She was trembling.
"Mommy told me something about that cabinet.""
I knelt.
"What did Mommy tell you, sweetheart?""
Lily glanced nervously at Vanessa.
Then she whispered:
"Mommy said if Grandma Patricia ever came looking for the blue box, I should tell you that she wasn't really Grandma's friend.""
Vanessa dropped the key.
May you like
And from downstairs, Patricia screamed:
"VANESSA! TELL HIM THE TRUTH BEFORE HE FINDS THE SECOND WILL!""
