Chapter 8: The Name on the Paper
Dad didn’t speak for a long time.
He just stared at the paper.
Like the words were impossible.
Like if he looked away, they might disappear.
“Dad?””
He folded the page slowly.
“Ethan, I need you to understand something.””
I hated that sentence.
Adults always said it before telling you something painful.
“What?””
Dad looked at Michael.
“Is this real?””
Michael nodded.
“I wish it wasn’t.””
Amanda moved closer.
“David, don’t listen to him.””
Dad turned.
“You knew about this.””
Her face changed.
“I knew something.””
“What?””
“I knew Michael had problems.””
Michael laughed bitterly.
“Problems?””
“You were angry. You were reckless.””
Dad looked between them.
“Stop.””
His voice was louder.
Both of them went quiet.
“I want the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Dad unfolded the paper again.
His hands were shaking.
“I need to know why Ethan’s father wrote Michael’s name.””
I looked at Michael.
He looked away.
Finally, he said:
“Because I threatened him.””
Lily gasped.
Dad’s face went pale.
“Why?””
Michael sat down.
“I was in debt.””
Nobody moved.
“I borrowed money from the wrong people. I started making terrible decisions.””
He looked at the floor.
“Ethan’s father found out.””
My heart hurt.
“Found out what?””
Michael swallowed.
“That I was involved with people who were dangerous.””
Dad stared at him.
“And Ethan’s parents?””
“They wanted to report it.””
A cold feeling spread through me.
“So you caused their accident?””
Michael immediately shook his head.
“No.””
His voice broke.
“No, Ethan. I swear to you.””
I wanted to believe him.
But I didn’t know who to trust anymore.
“You threatened them.””
“Yes.””
“And then they died.””
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
Michael looked like he hated himself.
“But I didn’t kill them.””
Dad looked down.
“Then why hide the letter?””
Michael answered quietly.
“Because I was ashamed.””
Amanda suddenly spoke.
“Because he knew he would go to prison.””
Michael looked at her.
“You’re one to talk.””
Dad turned.
“What does that mean?””
Amanda didn’t respond.
Dad stepped closer.
“Amanda.””
She looked trapped.
“I didn’t know about the accident.””
“But?””
She looked at the floor.
“But I knew Michael was hiding something.””
My heart sank.
“How?””
Amanda closed her eyes.
“Because I found the file.””
Dad stared.
“When?””
“Before we got married.””
Silence.
“You knew this before you married me?””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
Amanda looked at me.
“Of losing you.””
I didn’t understand.
“You thought Dad would leave you because of me?””
She didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
Dad looked devastated.
“You could have told me.””
“And then what?””
“The truth.””
Amanda shook her head.
“No. You would have chosen him.””
Dad looked at her.
“He was a child.””
Her tears fell.
“I know.””
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then my phone rang.
Everyone froze.
I didn’t have a phone.
Lily didn’t.
Dad reached into his pocket.
But the sound wasn’t coming from him.
It was coming from the old backpack beside me.
The one where I kept Dad’s recording device.
Dad opened it.
Inside was another phone.
An old one.
I had never seen it before.
Michael looked at it.
His face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
Dad picked it up.
“It was with Ethan’s things.””
The screen lit up.
One missed call.
One voicemail.
The number was unknown.
Dad pressed play.
A woman’s voice filled the room.
A voice I didn’t recognize.
But Michael did.
He turned completely pale.
“Who is that?”” Dad asked.
Michael whispered:
“Ethan’s mother.””
Nobody breathed.
The voicemail continued.
“If you’re hearing this, it means we didn’t make it.””
I grabbed Lily’s hand.
The voice continued.
“David… if you ever find this, please protect our son.””
Dad covered his mouth.
Then came the final sentence.
May you like
The sentence that changed everything.
“Because the person who hurt us is someone you trust.””
