Chapter 7: The Truth She Buried
Amanda ran.
Not far.
Just one step backward.
But everyone saw it.
Dad saw it.
Michael saw it.
I saw it.
And somehow, that one movement answered a question nobody had asked out loud yet.
She was hiding something.
Dad’s voice was quiet.
“Ethan, take Lily upstairs.””
I didn’t move.
For years, I had listened when adults told me to leave.
Go to your room.
Don’t ask questions.
Don’t interrupt.
But this time, I couldn’t.
“No.””
Dad looked at me.
I held his gaze.
“I need to know.””
His expression softened.
Because maybe he finally understood that I wasn’t a little kid who could be protected by silence anymore.
Lily stepped beside me.
“Me too.””
Dad looked at both of us.
Then he looked at Amanda.
“Fine.””
Amanda crossed her arms.
“You’re really going to believe him?””
Michael looked hurt.
“I’m not asking you to believe me.””
He placed the photograph on the table.
“I’m asking you to stop lying.””
Amanda stared at the picture.
“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””
Michael laughed softly.
A sad laugh.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
Dad picked up the photo.
“Explain.””
Michael took a breath.
“Ethan’s birth parents weren’t strangers to us.””
I looked at him.
“Who were they?””
Michael’s eyes moved to me.
“They were good people.””
That answer hurt.
Because I wanted more.
Names.
Memories.
Something.
“What happened?””
Michael looked down.
“They died in an accident.””
Dad nodded.
“I know that part.””
“No.””
Michael shook his head.
“You know the story you were told.””
The room became silent.
Amanda looked nervous.
Dad noticed.
“What are you saying?””
Michael looked at her.
“I’m saying Amanda knew Ethan’s parents.””
My chest tightened.
Amanda immediately stepped forward.
“That’s ridiculous.””
Michael didn’t react.
“You worked at the same company.””
“I barely knew them.””
“You knew them enough to know they were planning to move.””
Dad looked at Amanda.
“Move?””
She avoided his eyes.
Michael continued.
“Ethan’s parents were going to leave the city because they were afraid.””
“Afraid of what?”” I asked.
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
Dad looked at Michael.
“Afraid of who?””
Michael’s jaw tightened.
“Me.””
The words hit the room like thunder.
Lily gasped.
Dad stared at him.
“What?””
Michael rubbed his hands together.
“I made mistakes.””
“What kind of mistakes?””
Michael looked at me.
“The kind that made innocent people afraid.””
Amanda suddenly spoke.
“Don’t pretend you’re the victim.””
Michael turned toward her.
“At least I’m admitting what I did.””
Dad’s face hardened.
“Both of you need to start explaining.””
Amanda walked toward the table.
“You want the truth?””
Dad nodded.
“Yes.””
She looked at me.
Then at Lily.
Then back at Dad.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“Of losing everything.””
Dad shook his head.
“You already had everything.””
Amanda’s eyes filled with tears.
“No. I had a husband who loved a child that wasn’t mine.””
My stomach dropped.
Dad immediately stepped forward.
“Enough.””
But Amanda continued.
“I watched you look at Ethan like he was your whole world.””
“And?””
“And I wondered if there would ever be enough love left for Lily.””
Lily’s face changed.
Not anger.
Pain.
“Mom…”
Amanda looked at her daughter.
“I didn’t mean—”
“You did.””
Lily’s voice cracked.
“You made Ethan feel unwanted because you thought loving him meant loving me less.””
Amanda looked away.
No answer.
Dad took a deep breath.
“That still doesn’t explain Michael.””
Michael spoke.
“I do.””
Everyone looked at him.
“I found out Ethan’s parents had left something behind.””
“What?””
“A file.””
Dad frowned.
“What file?””
Michael hesitated.
Then he reached into his coat again.
This time, he pulled out a small envelope.
“It belonged to Ethan’s father.””
My heart stopped.
“My dad?””
Michael nodded.
“He wrote this before he died.””
Dad stepped forward.
“Why do you have that?””
Michael looked ashamed.
“Because I took it.””
The room went silent.
“You stole it?”” Dad asked.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Michael looked at me.
“Because it contained the truth about what happened before Ethan came into your life.””
My fingers curled into fists.
“What truth?””
Michael handed the envelope to Dad.
But before Dad opened it, Amanda suddenly shouted:
“Don’t!””
Everyone turned.
Amanda looked terrified.
Not angry.
Terrified.
Dad slowly looked at her.
“Why?””
She had no answer.
And that was when Dad opened the envelope.
Inside was one single page.
He read the first line.
Then his face changed.
“What?””
I stepped closer.
“What does it say?””
Dad looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“Your father knew who caused the accident.””
