Chapter 5: The Letter in Dad’s Drawer
Dad arrived home just after sunset.
I knew it was him before I saw his truck.
The sound of the engine was familiar.
For four days, I had waited for that sound.
But this time, when the front door opened, I didn’t run.
I stood in the hallway.
Because I didn’t know what would happen next.
Dad walked inside carrying his work bag.
The moment he saw me, his face changed.
He dropped everything.
“Ethan.””
I ran to him.
He hugged me so tightly I could barely breathe.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
I held onto him.
“You didn’t do anything.””
Dad pulled back.
His eyes were wet.
“Yes, I did.””
Behind him, Lily ran forward.
“Daddy!””
He hugged her too.
For a moment, everything felt normal.
Then Amanda appeared in the doorway.
The room changed.
Dad stood up.
“Where is Michael?””
Amanda looked away.
“I don’t know.””
“You do.””
“No.””
Dad reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
He pressed something.
Then I heard a voice.
Amanda’s voice.
From a recording.
“I can’t let David find out Ethan knows.””
Amanda’s face went pale.
Dad looked at her.
“You want to explain?””
She stared at the phone.
“I was angry.””
“That doesn’t explain everything.””
“I made a mistake.””
“No.””
Dad shook his head.
“You made hundreds of choices.””
Nobody spoke.
Then Dad looked at me.
“Ethan, there’s something you need to know.””
I sat down.
Lily sat beside me.
Dad took a deep breath.
“When you were little, your mother and I wanted children.””
I looked at him.
“But we couldn’t have them.””
Dad’s eyes lowered.
“Then we met you.””
I listened carefully.
“You were four years old. You were living in a foster home after your parents died.””
I already knew my parents were gone.
But Dad rarely talked about it.
“You were quiet,” he continued.
“Everyone thought you needed time to adjust.””
A small smile appeared on his face.
“But you saw another little boy crying in the hallway. You gave him your toy car.””
Lily smiled.
“That sounds like Ethan.””
Dad nodded.
“That was the moment I knew.””
He looked at me.
“I knew you were my son.””
I swallowed.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Dad looked hurt.
“I wanted to.””
He paused.
“But your adoption papers were being finalized. I thought we should wait until you were older.””
Amanda looked uncomfortable.
Dad turned toward her.
“Then after we married, I thought we were building a family.””
Amanda looked down.
“I tried.””
Dad’s expression hardened.
“No. You pretended.””
She flinched.
Dad walked to his desk and opened the drawer.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I wanted Ethan to have it someday.””
He handed it to me.
My name was written on the front.
Ethan.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was Dad’s.
Ethan,
If you are reading this, it means you are old enough to understand something important.
Being a father is not about where a child comes from.
It is about choosing them every day.
My eyes blurred.
I looked up.
Dad was crying.
Lily leaned against me.
Then I noticed something else inside the envelope.
A smaller piece of paper.
Dad saw it.
His face changed.
“Wait.””
Too late.
I opened it.
It was a hospital document.
A name was written at the top.
My name.
And underneath it…
A section I had never seen before.
Biological family information.
Dad grabbed the paper gently.
“Ethan, don’t.””
But I had already seen the name.
A name I didn’t recognize.
A name that made Dad go silent.
Because written there was:
*Michael Carter.*
May you like
My uncle.
The same man Amanda had been talking to.
