Chapter 13: The Secret Inside the Necklace

Everyone looked at me.

I touched the necklace hanging against my chest.

The one thing I had carried for as long as I could remember.

My mother’s necklace.

My father’s gift.

A piece of my past.

Grandfather smiled.

“You never knew what you were wearing, did you?””

Dad stepped closer.

“Don’t talk to him.””

Grandfather ignored him.

“Your parents were smarter than everyone thought.””

Michael stared at the necklace.

“No…”

Amanda covered her mouth.

“What?””

Michael whispered:

“They hid it.””

Dad turned.

“Explain.””

Michael looked at me.

“When your parents realized they were being watched, they needed somewhere safe to keep information.””

My fingers tightened around the necklace.

“So they put it there?””

Michael nodded.

“Your mother told me she had a backup plan.””

Grandfather’s expression changed.

“You knew?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“I knew they had something.””

Dad looked between them.

“And nobody told me?””

Michael lowered his head.

“I was afraid.””

Dad laughed bitterly.

“Everyone was afraid.””

The room became quiet.

Then Lily stepped forward.

“But how do we get it out?””

Everyone looked at her.

She was still six.

Still the little girl who gave me her chicken.

But she had been brave all night.

Michael knelt down.

“Your necklace has a hidden compartment.””

I looked at it.

“A what?””

He pointed carefully.

“Your father designed it.””

Dad took the necklace gently.

He examined the small silver piece.

After a few seconds, his eyes widened.

“I remember this.””

Everyone looked at him.

“When Ethan was little, his father asked me to keep something safe.””

My heart jumped.

“You knew?””

Dad shook his head.

“Not this.””

He looked at the necklace.

“I thought he was talking about a memory.””

Grandfather suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

He reached toward me.

Dad grabbed his arm before he could touch me.

“Don’t.””

Grandfather struggled.

“You have no idea what you’re holding.””

Dad pushed him back.

“Neither did you.””

For the first time, Grandfather looked scared.

That was when we knew.

The necklace mattered.

Dad carefully opened the hidden piece.

Inside was something tiny.

A small memory card.

I stared.

“That’s it?””

Michael nodded.

“That’s everything.””

Grandfather’s face went pale.

“No.””

Dad picked it up.

“You’re finished.””

Grandfather laughed suddenly.

Everyone stopped.

Because it wasn’t a scared laugh.

It was confident.

“You still think evidence wins?””

Dad looked at him.

“What are you talking about?””

Grandfather reached into his pocket.

“I’m talking about the fact that nobody will believe a dead man’s recording.””

The room froze.

“What recording?”” Dad asked.

Grandfather smiled.

“The one that proves Ethan’s parents weren’t killed because of me.””

Michael frowned.

“Then why hide it?””

Grandfather looked at him.

“Because it proves what you did.””

Michael went silent.

I looked at him.

“What does he mean?””

Michael looked like he wanted to disappear.

Dad turned.

“Michael.””

A long pause.

Then Michael whispered:

“I was there.””

Everyone froze.

“At the accident?””

Michael nodded.

My stomach dropped.

“Why?””

He closed his eyes.

“Because I was trying to stop it.””

Grandfather laughed.

“Tell them the rest.””

Michael looked broken.

“I got there too late.””

Dad stared.

“What happened?””

Michael looked at me.

“I saw the car.””

His voice shook.

“I saw your parents.””

I couldn’t breathe.

“I called for help.””

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Michael cried.

“Because I was scared they would blame me.””

Dad looked hurt.

“You let me raise Ethan without knowing.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe a lie.””

“I know.””

The room was silent.

Then Dad’s phone suddenly buzzed.

A notification.

A file transfer completed.

Everyone looked.

The memory card from the necklace had automatically connected.

A video appeared.

Recorded years ago.

Dad pressed play.

A woman appeared on the screen.

My mother.

My knees almost gave out.

She looked younger.

Happy.

Alive.

“Ethan,” she said.

My entire world stopped.

“If you’re watching this, you’re older now.””

I covered my mouth.

Her voice continued.

“I need you to know something.””

She smiled.

“You were never abandoned.””

Tears filled my eyes.

“You were loved every single day.””

Then her expression became serious.

“But someone will try to convince you otherwise.””

The video paused.

A shadow moved behind her.

Then my mother said:

“The person you need to fear is not the person you think.””

She looked directly into the camera.

“It’s the person who helped us…”

The screen glitched.

Then went black.

Everyone stared.

Dad whispered:

“No.””

Because the video hadn’t ended.

It had been interrupted.

And somewhere on the screen…

A final message appeared.

*FILE 2 OF 3 AVAILABLE.*

Dad looked at the necklace.

May you like

Then at Grandfather.

“Where is the second file?””
